Captains Courageous (1937)
When John Carradine recommends a good movie of his to watch, you take the advice! He knew he made a lot of stinkers for the paycheck, but he also was highly aware of the good films he made too.
Based on the Rudyard Kipling book, the film follows the growth of a spoiled rich brat who falls off of an ocean liner and is rescued by a fishing boat. He learns some humility, patience, and how to catch fish under the mentorship of Portuguese fisherman Manuel (played by the wonderful Spencer Tracy).
John Carradine plays Long Jack, the skeptical foil to Manuel, who doubts not only his fishing abilities, but his patience to teach the incorrigible young boy anything about life on a ship.
Also worth noting is a great performance by Lionel Barrymore (who is stiff gaited in the film, but not quite wheelchair bound like in his later years).
Rewatch Factor: It’s very well done, and many scenes are quite poignant. If you love a good coming of age tearjerker, you’ll enjoy this one over and over. Every characterization is also very enjoyable.
The Carradine Factor: He’s subtle as the foil but not despicable. He puts on his best New England fisherman accent and even sings a bit with his baritone voice during one of the sea shanty scenes. This film also inspired Carradine to learn more about nautical life as he owned a yacht, a schooner, and was part of the U.S. Coast Guard when he was rejected by the Navy during WWII enlistment.

Pod Together Rolling Remix: eight stories, eight podfics, six fandoms, huzzah!
@pod-together has begun reveals, releasing new creations each day. @phoenixfalls and I worked together again, and our works went live today!
We decided to do a multi-fandom Rolling Remix, in which I would write a story and pass it to her, she'd write a story riffing off mine and pass it back, I'd write a story riffing off hers... Nothing was barred: we could change fandoms and pairings as we liked. We ended with eight stories in six fandoms, whee! And then we each podfic'd what the other one wrote.
Readers/listeners interested in a single fandom may enjoy any story as a stand-alone. (We suggest reading the three Vorkosigan Saga stories in order as a set.) More adventurous readers/listeners may choose to explore the entire project -- and to make that easier, we've included "What You Need to Know" summaries about each fandom, in both text and audio.
Here's the all-in-one:
Pod-Together Rolling Remix Link to the series page. Includes all-in-one audio download, a map of how the stories are connected (and an image description for the map), plus links to each of the stories. Use the map to explore, or follow the series order, or pick and choose as you please. Please heed the warnings for the individual stories.
And here are the individual stories! Audio are included on each page.
