The meeting room was unpleasantly hot, filled with the kind of heat that only arose in the midst of great tension and stress. The mayor, town council members, town authorities, event organisers, a few chosen representatives from local news sources, and select few business owners all fought to have their voices heard on the matter of the annual event that was proving more troublesome than ever to plan.
"Cancelling the event is out of the question-"
"We rely on the Pumpkin Palooza to get by throughout this season-"
"People need the joy to inspire hope, which is exactly what we need in the community right now-"
"Local business can only do so much, we need something to bring in the out of towners-"
There were too many opinions all being shared at once; the discussion had transitioned into something more like an argument, and it was clear that the mayor, who was attempting to run the event, was ill prepared for such a thing.
"Please, please, everybody, quiet down now, I can't address you all at once." Desperation shone through his young yet tired eyes. "I would like to first reiterate that I wouldn't at all like to cancel either event - the Pumpkin Palooza or the Halloween Fright Night - but this is a mandatory discussion that must take place as the safety of Cardinal Hill is absolutely paramount."
Quiet finally fell upon the room, though not all attendees were happy about the fact.
"After the horrific conclusion to the carnival," the mayor continued, "and with the absence of any further leads proving the danger to be out of our community, we need to proceed with great caution. You've heard my multiple proposals for how to best move forward; not all of them were to cancel the events entirely. I understand their importance, just as I understand the importance of hope."
"We're a tough lot, Mr. Mayor," an aged, gruff voice tuned in. "We can take more than you could ever know. Let the people have their fun."
Open conversation continued, a lot calmer again, something that seemed to please the clearly close to crumbling mayor. His proposals were discussed and debated upon, proposals ranging from the cancelling of events to the events running as per usual, only with added security and safety measures. Some attendees spoke with a careless causality, while others spoke with great anxiety and gave the impression that they had close familiarity with the horrors that had occurred at the event.
Finally, a consensus was voted upon.
"From the 26th, to the 30th," the Mayor reiterated the voted upon dates of the year's Pumpkin Palooza, condensed to a five day run, rather than an entire week, "with our added security measures, as discussed. Then our Fright Night shall run as usual, only with extra added security measures to eliminate risk." There was an intensity to the way the mayor spoke, a high-strung, anxious quality to his tone.
The decision seemed to at least partially satisfy most in the room, though it had certainly taken its time to get there.
Later in the evening, the mayor was the last remaining in the building. While he had his own office elsewhere - several, in fact - he stayed in the meeting room, desperate to finalise notes while the thoughts were still fresh.
He was halfway thought a list of new safety protocols when the lights went out, swallowing him in a deep, pitch black.
He froze, pen still in hand, the silence feeling louder, only broken by the ticking of a clock on the wall.
"Hello?" He called. Did someone not realise that he was in there? Was it an honest mistake? Or was it perhaps a power outage? It was unusually windy...
"Is anybody there?" Only the ticking of the clock responded.
He stood, but in the darkness, his leg caught the edge of the chair, and it sent him sprawling across the ground dramatically. Pain flared up his side as he hit the ground with an echoed thud. He cursed under his quick and shallow breath, and he tried to orient himself with little success.
Reaching out, the mayor's hand found the wall, and he dragged himself up, feeling the paint under his palm damp, and strangely... warm?
A voice almost quieter than a whisper took his attention away from the unsettling sensation.
"...almost time..."
He sat up straighter, more alert, though still disoriented and struggling in that state. "Who's there? What was that?"
"... you shouldn't have..."
Another voice overlapped with the other.
"...naive little mayor..."
"Whoever you are, this isn't funny. This is a private building at this time of the night, and I'm using this meeting room to conduct very important work for the town." The mayor was trying to be brave, but his voice trembled.
What came next was laughter, the type that was almost acidic with nastiness. The mayor seemed to snap from frightened to angered, and it was as if the anger willed him to realise he had a source of light right in his pocket.
He pulled out his lighter, and he sparked it on without hesitation, while the laughter still floated through the darkness.
A shriek of sheer terror joined the sound of the laughter as when the room lit up, even only so dimly, the mayor could see blood drenched walls, and piles of dead bodies layering the floor.
The lighter snapped shut, the darkness returned, and the mayor fell back in a state of unconsciousness.

Pascal Gallo, our Michael Cimino, is looking for the family descendant of the witch who cursed his family!
They’re a witch or human, and are said to look like UTP. You do not have to but can contact Mad at @wcirdo before applying!
As the story goes, Pascal's great, great grandfather was living in Cardinal Hill with his family nearly a century ago. The man was a con man by nature and swindled a witch out of her last dollar resulting in this witch casting a curse of misfortune on Pascal's great, great grandfather and every descendant of his after. Pascal has come to Cardinal Hill to trace the witch that cursed his family's lineage and eventually finds your character as one of their descendants. This connection is open to both witch and human characters however if this character is not magical themselves they would still be in the know about magic and their family's connection to the supernatural and have roots in Cardinal Hill that go back several generations.
Gideon Fitzgerald, our Josh O'Connor, is looking for their love interest!
They’re a witch or human, and are said to look like Dev Patel, Raymond Ablack, Nathan Stewart Jarrett, Tommy Martinez. You do have to contact Persephone @spookyfragmentx before applying!
This character should be between the ages of 30-40 and male. The character could be a witch or a human. Gideon has never been with anyone. He's always been in denial / guarded and never allowed himself to be with anyone or get close to anyone. So the character would have to be somewhat understanding of that or at least be prepared to deal with that. It would be a slow process and not something that happens over night. FC is mostly UTP but MOC is preferred!
