May 13 - Miami
Beautiful day, sunshiny and hot
Today we drive 2 hours from Marco Island to Miami to get ready for the flight home.
Since we arrived around 1 pm we went directly to Old’s Havana on Calle Ocho. We had the great Cuban sandwich, tostones and coconut flan! Delicious!
From there, I fought the traffic to get to Coral Gables to return the car.

May 10 - continues
It kept on raining until almost 6 pm, but then it cleared and the sun came out.
At 7 pm we decided to go to the beach to see the sunset. It seemed that everyone had the same idea, people were coming out of the hotels and condos heading to the beach and the water. It turned out that after the storm the beach was covered with shells! I was able to get quite a few nice ones, very different than the ones from San Diego.

Monday - May 12
There was a storm last night and it rained quite a bit. When we got up it was dark and cloudy with no rain.
The plan was to drive to Sanibel Island near Fort Myers, a well known beach for its shells. It has recently reopened after being almost destroyed in a hurricane a couple of years ago. Everyone as well as the travel books, mentioned how beautiful a beach it is.
We drove 1 1/2 hours passing through Naples, a wealthy area full of gates communities, country clubs, and golf courses. It began to rain approaching Fort Myers.
Sanibel is an island which is reached by crossing a pretty big bridge over the ocean. The place has the Key West feeling, with one story houses, bike paths, burger places, etc. We made it to Bowman’s Beach, the rain stopped a bit, and as we started walking towards the beach it started again. Once the shower stopped , I ran to the beach to get some pictures. I couldn’t even get a shell!
May 11 - Marco Island
Beautiful day to enjoy the beach-
We took advantage of the private beach that the resort provides especially the beach chairs and umbrellas. Even though it was a little cloudy, the sun was quite strong. It would be impossible to be at the beach for any length of time without an umbrella. The water was nice and warm but with waves and strong compared to the Keys. This feels like the real ocean!

Had an ice cream at Sweet Annie’s ice cream shop, the number one place in Marco for ice cream. Besides ice cream, they sell all sorts of bulk candy, puzzles, toys, etc. we were told that Italian brothers own this places together with a few of the main restaurants on the island.
Then based on the recommendation of the valet, we went to Stan’s Bar in Goodland, a local hangout for drinks and music. We heard some of the music but they were ready to close by the time we got there (5 pm). They close at 6 pm. Lots of bikes, people dancing and drinking!

May 10 - Marco Island - on the Gulf of Mexico coast
After driving 232 miles and 5 1/2 hours straight, we arrived at Marco Island on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It is a long way from Key West to here as we crossed the Keys, Homestead and the Everglades. Highway 41 is part of the TaMiami trail and crosse the Miccosukee Indian Reservation. The Everglades can be accessed at several points .
We road out of the Keys on US 1 as it is the only road in and out. Fortunately, being Saturday there were no road construction crews or much traffic.
We reached Homestead which is in the middle of an agricultural section of Florida. The town is nothing much to see. There were many nurseries selling palm trees, and fruit trees.
Everything changes upon arriving at Marco Island. The houses are modern and the map shows them to have water in between them. The beach is surrounded by resorts and condos, but it is still wide with white sand and shells. Apparently, Marco Island was developed in the 1960s specifically geared to the northeast of the US to lure people into Florida.
We are staying in a one bedroom suite in a resort on the beach. It has a full kitchen all equipped. So we went to Publix, a chain of grocery stores mostly in the southeast. We bought stuff for breakfast as there is nothing close to the hotel and the Starbucks had the worst reviews.
We also went to the “private” beach to watch the sunset. The resort provides the chairs, towels, and umbrella. The sunset was beautiful and it was the perfect temperature!

May 9 continues
Mallory Square is where people go to watch the sunset every night and that’s what we did . There were many tour boats and sailboats there too.
