The last 36 hours I spent with Moths.
I don’t believe I’ll post this anywhere else.
FEST 13 Wallpaper Pack I'm not used to presenting my images in b&w, I'm also not used to making wallpaper packs. FEST is over until next year, but I want to see some of my favorite moments every day. After browsing the FEST Nerds facebook group, I was sure a lot of you did as well. Here I've compiled eight of my favorite moments(sets, wtvr) and presented them in a 16x9 aspect ratio. You can download the full res versions for your computers/tablets/whathaveyou here - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bskpxq6vpn4tuqc/AAC8ohbtL5HgB5JQYbYBvD59a?dl=0 Feel free to share these around wherever you wish, I just ask that you send me a link to where it's posted (because it makes me feel cool.) American Football, Webster Hall, 10.12.2014 Short Experience: I arrive at NYC’s Megabus stop at 7:34. A quick google maps search tells me that it is a 30 minute walk to Webster Hall, or a 9 minute taxi ride. I decide to run, after accepting that I’ve been on the bus for the past 19 hours. At the door at 7:55, I ask the security where Will Call is - they point me to their direct left. Literally it’s the guy standing next to them. He gives me a photo pass and I rush in before Matt Pond started at 8. I meet Nick Karp in between Matt Pond’s and American Footballs sets. He tells me about his experiences and I’m all ears. My good friend Antonio gives me a call at 9:12, saying hes at the door - american football goes on at 9:15 however and the grand ballroom is hella packed. I leave regardless to get him, I mean, I don’t care if I can only shoot the first three songs. It’s usually two songs too many, and rather I just soak up the experience of being at the very front. I get back to the photo pit midway their first song (i believe it was one from their EP) to see 4 other photographers in the pit. I just had fun staring at their giant lp background. It was gorgeous. At the end of the third song a man in a suit gives me a hand motion to leave. Yeah I got it, I know how many three songs are, I can count. I’m the first one to leave the pit, making my way upstairs as Nick had explained how to get there. (He’s a real sweet dude if I hadn’t made that clear already.) Their last song was never meant, it had an exceptionally long intro that led into me (and the crowd) loving and screaming every word of it. At the end of the show I find my travel partner Nico, he tells me he spent $80 on beer during the show. Holy shit is my only response. He then proceeds to tell me about these Austrailian guys he’s met and how we’re spending the night at their condo. That story is saved for my trip report on my blog though. Empire! Empire! (IWALE) w/ Football, Etc & Free Throw (Holy Mountain, Austin, TX on 09.22.2014) 300 Word Experience: I walked in to hear Football, Etc start sound check. The first person I saw (other than the door guy) was Karl Herrera. (Earlier in the week at a Left Astray show I convinced him to smoke 10 cigarettes at once.) I hugged him and proceeded to walk to the front. The crowd was a good five feet from the stage, an overall shy crowd which continued throughout the night. Their ?fourth? song was Safety, which for me, changed my interpretation of their set from shy, to a calming safe haven filled with friends. Lindsay and Mercy have an interaction during songs that give off a springhtly feeling. It looks like fun, and becomes an overall well executed set. Free Throw had changed their sound since their last set in Austin 9 months prior, their guitars playing old with a tapping and glassy sound. About 4 songs into their set they mentioned that show - talking down on an Austin staple DIY venue for a poor crowd, and providing horrible (yet free) champagne to everyone in attendance for new years. I thought it was a pretty shitty thing to do considering that venue is the only place willing to host small DIY emo bands, especially when you have no contacts in Austin to book a house show. Empire! Empire! (IWALE) came on about 20 minutes after, the crowd was still apprehensive to get close to the stage. At one point they referenced themselves as an Angry Birds cover band. Some dude requested a song be played, but they couldn’t fulfill as they had a Fill-in on guitar that only knew said songs they rehearsed. Keith did move back and forth on stage a bit; just a bit faster than a shoegaze show and filled with personal stories. Ribbon was the final song played that night, tieing a sad show together with a beautiful hope. Coheed & Cambria w/ Thank You Scientist @ Stubbs BBQ, Austin TX 09.16.2014
300ish Word Experience: The day was cloudy, a particular nice one I imagine for those who stood outside hours for the sold out show. Coheed & Cambria, with support from Thank You Scientist held a sold out show at Austin’s famous Stubb’s BBQ. I walked up about 15 minutes after doors opened - the music was already starting by the time I had got to the gate (there was still a crowd of us waiting in line at the door.) Whoever scheduled this show probably isn’t in favor of punk time.
I was entirely surprised by the supporting act - Thank You Scientist. I was excited with how many people they had on stage (6). It was technical, catchy, and commanding. They were all interacting with the crowd, and feeding off the energy from the 2005 wave hands, singing, and applause. I may have been moved to dance at some parts, myself. It certainly wasn’t like whoever opened for fall out boy in 2013 (which becomes relevant as these are the only two outside shows I’ve seen at Stubbs.) While I was looking for a dividing line through the crowd, to get access to the photo pit - I was stopped at different occasions by other photographers. One asked how I snuck my camera in - I don’t look like the type of person to shoot shows apparently. The other one showed me his instagram and took my business card. Thanks for the comments guys, hopefully I’ll see you with your camera next time. Finally I reach the photo pit - I’ve politely asked, or scooted around about 64 people at this point. The security guy is real friendly, so is this other show photographer ?Yannie?. We chain smoke cigarettes for the next 30 minutes, exchange small talk, and are told from security that we should watch out for crowd surfers because they may hit us while we’re taking photos on the first three songs. There’s a phone on stage that starts ringing, the crowd stops yelling coheed, and I’m probably blocking the view for some girl in the front row. Oops. I stood there for a bit after taking a photo out of gut reaction. I thought “What do we remember?” When these three songs are over, what part of the experience stands out? Why do I remember the surroundings, more so than the actions that took place? I came to the conclusion that today, we are bombarded with stimulation. When recounting the past, I can only share my experience. I quit taking photos and just observe, the lights are beautiful jolts dancing along to the guitars. I come back to reality, noticing a security guard pulling off a crowd surfer behind me. I continue shooting the final song. Some other things happened that I don’t remember as I was shooting. The third song ends and while I leave the photo pit it starts to rain on me. Experience wise, 8.2 / 10 would go again without a camera.
