Stumbleupon was a huge inspiration for the creation of my site. Not so much the content but the approach in how people interact with the web. Stumbleupon’s premise is pretty genius:

Essentially it’s a discovery engine that finds and recommends web content to its users. Its features allow users to discover and rate web pages, photos and videos that are personalized to their tastes and interests using peer-sourcing and social networking principles. What’s even more interesting is when users use stumbleupon. Nowadays, when we want to go on the web, it’s more of a leisure thing if anything. Everything you can think of is on this mass web storm that can help you pass the time. Personally, I go on Stumbleupon before bed. I just click Stumple and based on my interests or travel, food, health, fashion, comedy, social issues, nature, Stumbleupon finds interesting sites that could potentially be of interest to me. I tend to lose track of time when I’m stumbling and come across different interfaces that educate me on various topics, remaining individual on the approach and experience. I wanted this to be a site that could educate my user in an efficient way for those that have an appeal to natural conservation as well as wanting to know more about it.

Progress in UI design for a beginner coder DXB301

Here I finally implemented colour changes in links to demonstrate important data that I wanted my viewer to take away. I also implemented this video because I wanted to show some of the illustrator icons that didn’t make the cut. I was attempting to do some hovering techniques but unfortunately due to some confusion, I was able to have a proper link to implement a Java animation. Essentially, I wanted java to change the colour of a stat and have it also change the garbage bins to the matching colour of the statistic simultaneously. I thought that this would make the experience even more enticing for my viewing thats interacting with my UI but with my limited HTML skill set it was a lot harder to implement than I thought.

I looked at various tutorials thats assisted me and gave me feedback and knowledge on the topic but one thing that I noted was that a lot of the time the tutorials provide you with a code but as to where I put it I’m still unsure. However, I was able to implement some colour change with hover in CSS and I am satisfied that I was able to achieve that action to make my UI even more appealing.

Continuing my progress work on my UIdesign for Interface Design. At this point CSS and HTML have been implemented.

I have finalized the layout of my interface design. I switched from an image that I found online to an image that I created myself on illustrator and found it to unite my minimal theme a lot more successful. This particular portion of the process was not too difficult in comparison to the implementation of some attempts with Javascript. At this point the parallax scrolling was executed with some obstacles. I was confused with the increase in vh increments. I understand that as you increase as you add more sections, but because I was only working with two layers I found the transitions to still be inconsistent throughout the viewport. I did my best to make it as seaming as possible but I really am proud at the fact that I was able to get the effect to work. It really does make a difference on the experience.

In this video I am beginning to layout my interface. In one sole plain I intend on implenting continuous scrolling. I’m a little intimidated in Javascript and JQuery so I’m hoping that implementing the parallax scrolling won’t be a complicated task. I think it makes the interface more enjoyable when having a user interact with the information that’s within. At this moment I am solely using HTML for placement but intend on adding style in CSS to make my design more effective.

The program that I am using is Kimodo IDE 9 and so far I find it easy to use with its colour coding and correcting. It makes me a little more confident in my limited skill set but it highlights when I have made errors in the code even though I am trying to be super diligent.

Process Update

I wanted to try and implement a UI design that was still effective to the best of my ability. Staying true to my flat design aesthetic, since I do not have a background in HTML. I was I wanted to create images on illustrator that could assist me in conveying the importance to compost for preserving the environment. With no outline and bold colour I intend on having my designs appeal to a younger demographic since my interface will be designed for a desktop screen. I wanted to target that Stumbleupon.com audience where younger demographics are clicking through their computers stimulating their minds through what the web has to offer and sometimes educating themselves on topics without them even realizing.

Interesting Facts

About half of what we throw into the garbage bin is food and garden vegetation. Compost bins and worm farms are available from some local councils. Anything that’s sharp or thorny should also be left out, because although the compost heap will destroy the thorns, you’re likely to scratch yourself later on, risking a trip for a tetanus injection. Did you know that increasingly more and more local councils are introducing organic recycling services to reduce the amount of organic waste going to landfill. Check whether your local council have a scheme and if they don’t ask them to introduce one.

How to Compost Yourself

Your Four Step Guide to Creating Great Compost 1. Choose a Site: Place your compost heap or bin in a well-drained area that has some shade. Too much sun will dry out your compost.

2. What to Compost:

Green Ingredients: Compost needs a mixture of nitrogen rich organic materials such as fruit and vegetable peelings, and green garden vegetation such as fresh grass clippings and green leaves. Brown Ingredients: Nitrogen-poor, carbon rich materials such as dry leaves, woody twigs, paper and straw. Water some soil or completed compost to introduce composting micro-organisms

3. Layering: Start with a thick layer of coarse material (~15cm), such as twigs or mulch, this is used for drainage. Then follow with a layered A,B,C system using the materials above A. Garden clippings and kitchen scraps, B. Dry leaves and paper (wet). C. Add water after each layer to keep the heap moist but not wet. Then repeat steps ABC. Finish with step D. Sprinkling soil or finished compost on top of food scraps will make a richer compost and help reduce odours.

4. Maintaining Your Compost: Keep your compost well aerated to prevent foul odours or methane. Turn your compost with a garden fork on a weeky basis. Otherwise place garden stakes or pipes through the heap to allow air in.
