Pholus was one of the most civilized wild centaurs to have existed (next to Chiron, who wasn’t necessarily a wild centaur). Hercules hunted the Erymanthian boar to complete his fourth labor. Which lead him to Pholus’s cave located in the mountain the boar terrorized. Hospitable as Pholus was, he warned Hercules about the wine saying he wished he could offer him drink but it belonged to the centaurs. Hercules was quenched from the boar chase and risked opening it. The smell alone caused the centaur’s to come to the cave and they went mad (a wine craze). Hercules being Hercules took out the arrows he would use on the boar and slew the centaurs who dared to attack him.
