Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazanskiy performed a six-hour spacewalk on Monday (27 Jan.) in support of assembly and maintenance on the International Space Station.

These glowing dots are memory-forming molecules travelling around the brain of mice.

Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine developed a mouse model in which molecules crucial to making memories (beta-actin mRNA) were given fluorescent “tags” so they could be tracked. Above you can see them traveling within a live brain cell in real time. This breakthrough is shedding light on how nerve cells make memories.

Here’s a great image pointing out the new supernova first spotted last week (January 21) as an unfamiliar object in the otherwise familiar galaxy M82. This galaxy is about 12 million light-years away, so the light from a supernova explosion reached the Earth just recently. It was bright enough to be discovered with a modest telescope in north London when astronomer Steve Fossey was taking students through a routine lesson at the University of London Observatory.

This weekend, two students in my school committed suicide. A few upperclassmen got thousands of sticky notes and wrote nice sayings on them and put one on every single locker in the school in hopes of lifting everyone’s spirits and making sure everyone knows that they aren’t alone
