The Needle Galaxy

What marks this galaxy out is the thin disk which we view edge on, the central bulge can be seen both above and below the spiral disk.

It's possible our Milky Way would look something similar edge on, although maybe not as thin as this galaxy.

The galaxy is around 40 million light years from Earth and similarly to the Milky Way, is about 100,000 light years in span.

It's sometimes hard to remember, that in this image alone, there is around 1 Trillion stars, and probably thousands of habitable planets , some that may even have life on, but we see it as it was 40 million years ago.

Assuming that intelligent life was as Drake saw it, and taking his lowest estimate for the Milky Way, here in this image are 1000 alien civilizations, most totally unaware of those around them, alone in our universe, looking back at the galaxy that is our Milky Way and maybe wondering exactly the same thing.

The irony being, if they were, they would be seeing a galaxy with a star called Sol, and a planet Earth, 40 million years ago.
