i told you things | moon song
pairings: sophia laforteza x fem!singer!reader
synopsis: when sophia finds love in someone else, y/n chooses distance over confession, letting the years they spent as each other's safe place fade into memories neither of them know how to forget. what sophia mistakes for growing apart is really the quiet heartbreak of y/n learning how to let go.
usually love stories begin with saying “i love you” theirs begin when neither of them does.
“you were all at once 'til the fade to black. 'til the yellow glow turned a little sad.”

y/n is two chicken nuggets in when she can't take the bouncing of sophia's leg anymore. she's talking about everything except whatever warranted an ''i need to talk to you'' text.
she's currently sitting with her knees to her chest on the other end of the couch, picking at her fries.
y/n decides to watch for another minute, hoping sophia would finally spit out whatever had her so anxious. when she ultimately doesn't, the singer lets out an exasperated sigh.
''are you planning on telling me what's wrong?''
sophia looks up at her with wide eyes.
the other girl looks at her with furrowed brows, head slightly tilted to the left in confusion.
''you said you needed to talk to me?''
sophia groans and lets her head drop so she's staring at her lap.
''the girls think i like mila.''
something inside y/n goes very still, her chest tightening before she can stop it.
she keeps her face neutral.
sophia glances up at her.
''that's all you have to say?''
''what do you want me to say?''
sophia sits up straighter and decides to close some of the distance between them.
''i don't know... tell me they're wrong.''
y/n almost laughs, because she knows they aren't. she spent weeks trying to convince herself otherwise, but looking at sophia now, she can see it clear as day.
sophia glances back down at her lap, picking at a loose string of her sweatpants.
that answer somehow feels worse than a yes.
y/n looks down at her hands, spinning one of her rings around her finger in hopes of keeping the tears at bay.
she looks back up to find the filipina watching her, brows furrowed deeply, completely unaware of the pain written across her best friend's face, of the tears she refuses to let fall.
the older singer swallows heavily. of course she'd ask. she's her best friend. she should've been prepared for this.
she wasn't prepared for the pain inside her chest that made her feel like she was going to throw up.
''how am i supposed to help?''
''tell me how i'm supposed to know if i actually like someone.''
y/n has to bite her tongue to keep a sarcastic remark from slipping out. she knows all too well what it's like to feel this way. she could tell her the truth. she really could.
''do you think about her when she's not around? do you get excited when she texts you? when you know you'll see her again soon? do you feel different when you're with her? like everything and everybody else kind of disappears?''
those feelings only scratch the surface of what sophia makes her feel, but she'd never let her know any of that. using them to help sophia figure out if she has feelings for another girl kind of feels ironic, but she'd do anything to help her, anything for her.
sophia smiles before she can stop herself. it's small, soft, and almost automatic.
y/n feels it before sophia says anything.
''yeah. all of that, yes.''
y/n looks off to the side, forcing a smile onto her face.
sophia stares at her with wide eyes.
it’s the same kind of realization she had with the girls earlier, only this time, it feels heavier. more real.
sophia laughs and lets her head fall against y/n's shoulder.
even when the contact feels physically painful, burning her skin.
''do you think i should do something about it?''
she could tell sophia to wait, to really think about it, to leave it alone.
instead, she looks down at the girl whose head is laying against her shoulder. she looks scared but so happy.
y/n can't force herself to be selfish. she can't be the person to ruin that happiness for her, even if it ruins her instead.
''yeah, maybe let it be something.''
sophia looks up at her, chin digging into her shoulder, and smiles, unaware of the ache slowly settling deeper into y/n's chest.
y/n wishes she hadn't asked. she wishes she hadn't answered. she wishes she was brave enough to tell her the truth.
but telling her the truth meant risking everything.
but most importantly, sophia's happiness.
especially because she wasn't her happiness anymore.
as long as that bright smile never faded.
