ellisbethany:
She almost didnât recognise him; Bethany had never had all that much to do with Carl. She had always kept her hands clean as much as possible; he worked in the field, getting deep into the muck that lay in every corner of New York. He was good at it, but they operated in two different worlds, connected merely by one string that tied everyone together. Gang war. She hadnât spoken to him in forever; and a brief memory of the gala flickered into her mind. Gummy bears. A night of wine and networking - a night that ended with a large bang. Sheâd put it out of her mind for so long, but everything was already colliding, dragging her back down into the muck. And yet he looked exactly the same as when sheâd last seen him, there was no sign that his life had self imploded like so many of theirs
Not that sheâd have been able to tell from her position, standing in the coffee shop. All she knew was that she hadnât seen Carl in a long time, and they both knew it. âCarlâ she nodded at him, trying to fix her features into a somewhat welcoming. Really she looked more guarded than perhaps she had hoped for, but what was she to do, his words told her everything she had feared. They hadnât expected to see her back again. Perhaps they had even hoped she had gone for good. And now her she was like a bad penny. His words werenât harsh, but all she could hear was an accusation, a suspicion towards her. âYeah, IâŚhad to take some time awayâ she explained, skimming across the details, her voice quiet. âHow have you been Carl?â
He hadnât expected anything in particular. Bethany and him hadnât been particularly close, nor had they gotten to know much about one another. Simply they had worked on the same side of the table; fighting for the same cause in very different ways. Where as some Carl had grown fairly close to over the years; Ashley, Rosie and Hallie, of course, there were always the other members of the Hearts that were on his radar but... only that. That wasnât to say he didnât care for those people though - or that he hadnât worried when Bethany disappeared, wondering if perhaps that would be the last time heâd ever see the woman again.Â
âDonât we all.â He mumbled, shifting in his spot with a nod as she explained the needed âtime awayâ. Honestly he believed every single one of them needed time away from this; from here. Perhaps permanently, and honestly that was one of the real reasons he was surprised to see her at all. He simply figured that if she had gotten out that... thatâs where she would have stayed. Far, far away. â...Same old, I reckon. Sâalways gonna be like that around here.â Unfortunately. âI uh.... Iâm honestly trying tâfind a way tâget some time away myself.... Preferably with Hallie... also preferably forever. But... You know how that goes.âÂ
