mature content and psychosexual notes on praline and jude’s dynamic under the cut
hello,
im not sure if you’ll remember but around the fall of last year i submitted a very long and winding conspiracy-rant style analysis of your work. I’d like to apologize. I’ve kept up now and then with what you’ve created and i’d like to say it was unfair to place what i had been dealing with onto your project which had no correlation.
i think i felt a very strong connection at the time to themes you were portraying in AT and let my own problems and trauma project onto something that in the end, isn’t and shouldn’t be a reflection of what I want it to be. it’s your own creation.
Thank you for handling it in such a professional and gentle way. you didn’t have to be as kind as you were, I was projecting pretty awful, inappropriate shit onto your stories out of trauma and the need to cope, and you were kind and gentle regardless.
i’m very happy you’re continuing with your work, it’s given a lot of people solace, even if some of us run off with it a little too much.
with more respect than i can possibly express,
anonymous freak
i do remember ! rest assured i’ve never held any ill will or taken offense.
i know better than anybody that when you relate to things in stories in certain capacities, it can feel very real and all consuming (the only difference is that i’m the one who gets to make it up). i’m not surprised when people feel this way about my work because that feeling is what it’s born from in the first place. i’m very used to others developing the same emotional connections so i hope you don’t feel alone in that sense. there’s a reason why i post this stuff, you know ? i get to share some of the weight on my shoulders. conspiracy rants are nice, and i’m not upset if they’re a little wrong. it’s just another opportunity for me to talk. so: it’s okay.
it’s a good time to send this, because i’ve just begun opening up about the events in long bright dark, which i mentioned briefly in my last response. i believe the events in that chapter are what you’re looking for as an outlet, if you still feel so inclined. i know it’s certainly an outlet for me, and all my deep rooted nonsense. it’s a cathartic chapter for me, and i hope it can be that way for others too. i don’t think you can really stop running with everything going on there.
i’m glad i’m continuing too, even if certain things made me stop for a little while. it’s messages like these that make me want to keep putting everything out there, even all my vulnerable stuff.
you can kiss your brother
the age old tale of jude and praline. they had a complicated relationship (or lack of one), they barely knew each other, barely saw each other. a marriage is just business in the crime world, you know ? it doesn’t have to be real. you don’t even have to like each other. especially if you’re only playing pretend. playing pretend is where funny feelings start to arise, though. sledge knew that, and he didn’t like it one bit. well, jude thought that was real strange.
Binged all of Far Gone and Out as soon as AO3 came back up and I love it!! I was a bit curious, since this takes place in 1998 (and I can’t remember when Sledge meets up with Praline again), but how would she react if him and the reader were together at that point? Does Sledge really even do relationships? Obviously FGAO isn’t out fully so I don’t know what happens but I’ve been thinking about where the reader would go with the canon since I finished all 5 chapters lol
sledge and praline reunite in the fall of 1999. far gone and out is starting around early march of 1998 id say. very early spring where its rainy and cool and sunny.
praline is not very on board with the idea of anybody else being around sledge (which i’ve expanded on previously). even in canon she is very wishy washy with him when he comes back and their relationship is not at all amicable, she’s almost uncomfortable with him coming back for her, so i think the addition of another person who she doesn’t even know would make it much worse. it was bad enough when she heard about him and enid. she does not like anyone else having his attention in any sort of way because it feels like betrayal to her.
sledge doesn’t do relationships solely because he’s so preoccupied with the girls, they take up all his time and resources and he would choose taking care of them over anything else and usually that does not go over well with people. in the (current) time frame of fgao though that’s not even a full thought in his head yet so it’s a much easier way in. this is also why i’m going to say it’s not impossible.
i’m trying to keep fgao as close to canon compliant as i possibly can so it can sort of just be read as additional material, so take that as you will.
pardon me if this question is weird, but do you have any black or other ocs of color? i honestly just want to see what poc would look like in your art style its gorgeous
i think it is a very fair question since i’m usually just drawing the main american tradition cast, and i rarely get to make full illustrations of all the other characters + all my characters in other stories !
my story index hasn’t been updated in a long while but for black main characters the first few that pop into my head are hannah from nadine’s revenge, rachel from all god’s children, lady mae from hold that thought (wip title), and delora from deathblow (who may very possibly be getting a name change).
i genuinely cannot name them all but a small assortment of other characters of color in general are: dhani, khalil, molly, iyana, james, mercy, and beatrice (american tradition), dove and nona (and the entire rest of the deathblow cast), soledad (hold that thought), theresa, reina, and aline (lividity), isabelle (uccellina), lidia (in utero), duska (black beauty) + many others i cannot list out in one sitting but feel free to ask.
here is a little photo of molly from the long dream animatic, she’s one of the central characters alongside jude and lucky in long bright dark. she comes back in 2011-2012.
dunno if this is weird to say or not (i don’t support her at all!! just an observation) but praline looks so much like jodi arias. teeth and face wise
if you ever think you are the first person to think this you are definitely not because i think i have gotten this comparison about 10 times
I’m so curious but are u into dreamsmp or where during covid time?
covid time is where i got all my sweet followers from and it was from posting creepypasta content on this very tumblr page. i do not know anything about the dreamsmp i have been a loyal shadow cadet to ldshadowlady my entire life.
hi carnalhaus,
i know that preacher’s daughter was not your favorite ethel cain work. i was wondering what you thought about her EPs, particularly golden age and carpet bed?
tonight the song dog days is reminding me of praline. i think of her often ♡
hi paperrcutting,
i am not a huge fan of golden age, but i am a big fan of head in the wall. i listened to carpet bed a lot while i was working on a certain character and my favorite song was growing pains. my friend crashed her old car listening to for sure, which i also like. my favorite unreleased song is concrete. i’ve warmed up to preachers daughter and i think i quite like a lot of the songs on it now.
p.s i think dog days definitely fits, in a way 🫀
I love your stuff on Duska!! when will you post more of her?
i will surely post more of duska someday along with my other smaller stories 🙂↕️ she’s quite an old character. everyone’s free to ask questions at any time. i watched fire walk with me a bit ago for her specifically and it definitely fit. klára reminds me of leland.
i’m wondering if we’ll ever find out how praline, sledge, stat, enid, all died? it breaks my heart to think about how american tradition does end, but i’m so curious to know how each of them go, if that makes sense!
all will be revealed in due time ! but not for a while. there’s still plenty to talk about.
Hi! I found your jeff the killer art on Pinterest and had to check you out on tumblr! Your jeff is so pookie

Hey , I have been reading your work for quite a while and was wondering if you are eventually going to post more on a03
far gone and out is all i’m posting over there for now, and it’s still ongoing ! i just picked up chapter 6 the other day and im planning on starting that.
i might post some things there in the future, but likely just oneshots instead of any actual canon writing material. i have a vague plan to write out some individual kilian & co x “reader” oneshots as a sort of writing exercise. we’ll see.
haiii kinda dumb question but i was looking thru screenshots of ur writing here and was wondering what font, size, line height, and word spacing u use? cuz it's really comfy for me to read and i need to switch up my own latest doc format since it's getting rlly tedious and boring but i can't quite hit the sweet spot on my own. Luv ur work!
i use times new roman (size 11) with double spacing. its the same way i was taught to format essays in school (but i think they recommend size 12 font). its the easiest for me to write with and read, but when i write on my laptop i do zoom in to about 125% or 150% because its easier for me to focus on the paragraph im writing.
edit: i used to change the background of the doc to a pastel color back in the day whenever i wrote, but these days i make sure my screen brightness is very low !
hi lucia! i hope you're doing well <3
i wanted to ask 1. what inspires you to write and the process you go through with writing (for ex. if you have any specific media or maybe writers you take inspiration from, if you take inspiration from real life events, if you need to watch a movie/read a book before writing to get in a flow, etc.) and 2. how you managed to create an audience that loves your work and is actually invested in it. i would like to do the same thing in the future, be able to publish my story and have people fall in love with the characters.
much love!!
trying to answer very so many writing asks i had buried…
for the first question: life ! much of my inspiration comes from my life, and just being out and about. i’ve always been a person who’s had too many thoughts that bleed over to the point of sudden fiction. some of my best inspirations are things which have nearly nothing to do with what i’m making (allegedly). i’m barely home, i try and spend the most time away from home as possible. this is why most pieces and stories start in my notes app on my phone. as an example let’s look at some of my inspirations for the 2003 chapter of american tradition, taking place in atlantic city:
i grew up visiting a small beach house by the lagoon in tuckerton every summer, where i could see the ferris wheel in beach haven all the way across the bay. my bathroom had a specific smell, and i thought of it like a buffer portal between home and the beach, because it held all the sand and had soapy sea air. it’s very curious how important scents are in preserving memories.
i have a small fascination with the former racehorse “ruffian,” one of the best racehorses who ever lived, who ran until her hoof broke off—and then kept running.
my family used to co own a restaurant, which was actually a haunted mansion. the mob used to frequent the speakeasy in the basement, and drag bodies out to the delaware through the revolutionary war tunnels. i visited that mansion thrice or so.
whales, as mentioned in my last post. i became very fixated on whales all the sudden and i’ve always found myself very curious about the ocean. i used to visit the museum of natural history in new york growing up. my favorite was the dark, dimly lit diorama of a sperm whale fighting a giant squid. then, the giant blue whale hanging from the ceiling. i found false killer whales very interesting, mostly because they’re not killer whales at all, and yet they’ve been reduced to a completely unrelated species. they have a tendency to strand themselves en masse, the highest totaling 835 individuals. they’re social animals, that’s why.
during a day at the mall, my friend and i met a very grating group of boys. we drove about an hour away to seaside heights (at night, in the off season where it was still cold cold cold). down the boardwalk, we saw those boys again.
all this to say, inspiration is very fickle. my writing process varies depending on what i’m doing. when i’m writing far gone and out, i always do the same thing: i lock myself in the dark room in my house nobody goes in (i like to call it the david lynch room because of how it looks), i sit down with a redbull, or a convoluted coffee order, and i write to my writing playlist which mostly consists of creepy jazz. because it’s a very location dependent story, i keep a bunch of tabs open with photos and google earth addresses so i can get a better feel of descriptions. every story has a different vibe and thus a different method, but this one seems to work for some other things i work on. sometimes i like to watch a mood-setting movie while i eat my dinner on my writing break. for fgao, i recall watching lost highway more than once. my favorite part is writing until im sleep deprived, which i definitely do not recommend, but with the main character im writing, i find its the time i write the best. flow state if you will.
for the second question: oh dear. i get this question a lot and i can really never give a good answer, because ive found its luck and faith. i started posting here and there about fandom stuff, which was how i gained my initial wave of followers, but then i quickly pivoted to original stories, and it just went up from there. i really can’t tell you what i might’ve done, because i feel like ive done nothing special. there’s many months long stretches where it sort of overwhelms me and i retreat back into my cave to work on things privately. the best advice i can give is to just post without any inhibition, i guess thats what got me here. i opened myself to a lot of questions, and frequently posted ramblings about my own work. it’s hard to say what might get people invested, because i think there’s an audience out there for anything.
