So I just watched Fantastic 4, the new MCU one, and I gotta say, my god, this is exactly what I love about retrofuturism, that unfaltering optimism, that tone of hopefulness. It goes beyond just the aesthetics, it really captures the utopian ideas that typify science fiction of the era. The idea that the whole world could work together to solve a problem, that technology could be used to save the world rather than bury it. That's the world I want to believe in. I'm so glad they chose to set this film in the 60s the way they did, and stuck true to the aesthetics and the sci fi themes of the time. I really think that's the kind of world these characters thrive in.

Chris Foss would sometimes paint over his previous work. Here, he turns a western illustration into a sci-fi one.

The past really is another planet, isn't it? The bit about the giant fungi that dominated Earth before trees even existed, that gives me all kinds of spacey vibes hehe
