I would like to personally voice my agreement with Joe Kent’s reasons for resignation. Despite not agreeing politically, I think people willing to take a stand related to their conscious are immensely commendable. And I agree with him on the needlessness of the war, other then to serve the people with vested interests in our military industrialists systems. And those vested interests frequently being in opposition to sustainable peace. And often an outward expression of inward personal discord on a psychological level.
However, as a functional matter, I’m not sure I would have viewed resignation as the best course of action. You are opening your post to an appointment for someone without a similar call to duty and sense of a moral compass. And that, ideally working in military industrial complex within this country, should be a matter of deterrence and avoidance. Away from war profiteers, the military industrial complex is only as successful as its avoidance of itself. And the business of war should ideally not be one of profit, but of lasting peace.
I think it’s generally a bad idea to hitch your wagon to foreign policy stances that have active warrants out from the ICC for violating international law, even as non signatories. I think that is an unreasonable foreign policy position by association. And I wish for a deescalation in the matter of Iran, as its proxies and its nuclear proliferation have always been economic policy and diplomatic policy centric. This is evidenced by the fact had an Iran deal a prior president won a Nobel for, only for it to be ripped up for no reason then the American political and the wishes of a foreign policy that has now been cited by the ICC as perpetrating crimes against humanity.
I would also like to say, I in no way support Iran’s regime, oppression of speech, oppression of the arts, and overall oppression of its people. I think sometimes everyone does in fact suck. However. I believe such escalations are not needed and are against the data of what has worked in their specific instance, which is diplomacy and economic policy andnot military aggression. Which has done little more then endanger our troops and serve aims at odds with American society and its lasting peace and prosperity.
