Katrina looked over at the mirror before giving Caroline a look, adjusting the straps on the bikini top. “I don’t know, it definitely looks better on you than on me.”
“Let me see,” she spoke while exiting the bathroom, lipstick tube in hand. “You’re fucking hot, what are you talking about? Nobody’s even going to notice me with you around.”

“You like my eyes, don’t ya, Care?” Riley set down the bat he’d been holding, letting it rest against the fence as he made his way towards the blonde. “What are you doing here? I thought I was meeting you later. Here to see a superstar in action?”
"Oh, we’re feeling presumptuous today.” She did. More than Caroline was ever willing to admit aloud. “Yeah you were, but I woke up early and I figured... Why not swing by?” At her own bad joke, she chuckled whilst nodding. “That and we’ve got a cruise ship to catch. So come on, superstar.”
"Now, somebody told me there’s a Henderson brother that teaches kids baseball around here. He’s about this tall, a real smartass, with the bluest eyes you’ve ever seen. Know where I might find him?” @rileyxhenderson

“We haven’t decided yet,” he said slowly, like he was gauging her reaction to what he would have to tell her. “You can be straight with me, but I’m marryin’ a man, so…” Corey gave a half smile at his own joke, sitting up straighter as he turned towards her. It was easy to ignore her bit about their mother, since the topic of that woman always soured his mood.
"Oh, well I’m sure you’ll have it all sorted soon enough. That’s still exciting though, having the whole adventure at your feet.” She couldn’t imagine pledging her life to another person, not at this stage of it at least. “Even better, girls are catty and they steal your shit. Take that from somebody who works in a female dominated environment.” Swallowing, Caroline opted to delve right into the heart of the matter. “Are you having second thoughts about any of this?” Specifically her, though she refused to voice such a selfish question. “This has been a lot to take in, I know.”

“Fuck, we should get egg rolls. What are we doing wrong right now?” Kat grinned inching the hem of her shirt up with her fingers to flash the porcelain skin underneath. “I don’t know how you do it babe, I feel like I’d get booed off stage every night.” She curled her arm through Caroline’s, tucking her close. “You didn’t know.” Dark brows tugged in, “It’s not like you’ve been living a picnic either. If he gets scared off by something like this– you didn’t need him around anyways.”
“Could we? I’d throw myself in front of a train for some Hibachi rice. Let’s take a left and we won’t be doing anything wrong. We’re only a couple of blocks from heaven on earth.” As if right on cue, she pulled Kat closer and directed them towards Chinese food instead of the diner. A better choice in every book. “My survival instinct outweighs my dignity. That’s how.” Coupled with her years of dancing experience, of course. “Life shouldn’t be this complicated, how do I ask for a refund? Which reminds me, can I adopt you, too? I need more siblings like Kat Unger.”

“I don’t have to know her. Every drug addict is the same. You’re speaking to someone who had their own demons.” Lance rubbed his jaw, trying not to sigh, “Okay, but how many times you gonna let her relapse? Since, y’know, you’re takin’ this on your plate and all.”
"I don’t know what else to do. I can’t just leave her like this...” The concept of walking away after so many years playing caretaker already grated at her nerves. “What happens if I stop intervening and she dies? That’s on me. It’s all--- it’s all on me.”

“It’s about…twelve fifteen,” Riley glanced at his watch, meeting her gaze after a moment, “My name is Riley. And it’s not admirable – it’s one of the only things I thought of doing when I got out here. My brother, Kyle, is the host of his own fuckin’ tv show out here. So I guess being compared to him is the usual.”
"Twelve-fifteen sounds like quitting time to me.” Would leaving early earn her a slap on the wrist? Most definitely, yet the blonde couldn’t avoid her intrigue over this particular patron and if leaving would oblige him... “But you thought of it, didn’t you?” A subtle shrug lifted her slender frame. “Success isn’t always measured on the same scale. Just because he’s one thing and you’re another doesn’t make you less than him... My brother’s a firefighter, he saves people for a living and here I am shaking my ass for tips. If somebody wants to compare us, they can be my guest.” Caroline knew her worth and she also knew the sacrifices made to reach this point. “Can you wait in here for five minutes while I grab my stuff and put on more clothes? It’s warm outside, but it’s not that warm.”

“Caroline. I like it. And no, not exactly.” Riley held up his left hand, watching as he began to shake the minute he tried tensing the muscles, “My hand was broken in a fight with one of my exes. Never really healed right because I was determined to make it work, even after the docs told me my pitching was over. So now I just teach kids how to throw amazing sliders and curve balls.” He gave a half smile, not entirely put off by her words, “What time do you get to leave this place?”
"Better than Sapphire? You also haven’t told me yours, stranger in the night.” Caroline teased before her smile faltered slightly at the man’s demonstration, empathy worming its way around her heart much as it did when she discovered yet another soul in her boat. “Jesus. I’m so sorry, that’s... Rough. Really rough. Good for you though, turning that around into something good. It’s admirable.” All she learned from her own experience was survival, how to keep pushing through to keep her head above water. “I had to give up my dream, too. Now here we are hiding out in a strip club that neither one of us wants to be at.” Her own grin slowly began to return at the posed question. “What time is it now?”

There used to be a time everyone knew his name; though Riley guessed he should count his blessings that his father fell from the fame of Hollywood, and only his brother garnered the spotlight from now on. “I did, once. I was a pitcher. Played in the minors for the Dodgers, but now I just coach little league. I like kids,” he said after a moment, shrugging his shoulders. He made a face, huffing out a laugh, “Yep, none here. And really? That’s what you want me to call you? Because I will.”
Were she more in tune with the world of sports, perhaps Caroline might have uttered his name once or twice, but fate had been unkind to the blonde and she knew more about local rehab clinics than pop culture. “I thought ballers were supposed to have everything; the fame, the fortune, the glory. You just gave all that up to coach kids?” Amending herself, she added, “Not that there’s anything wrong with it. Kids can be great and I hear they teach you a lot about yourself.” Her own snicker matched his breathy laugh. “God, please don’t.” It was against club rules to share their real names, partially to maintain the allure and partially to protect the dancers’ identities. Yet as her gaze leveled on his own, she found it rolling off her tongue without hesitation. “Caroline. My name is Caroline.”

Corey wished he could be better at it, instead looking down at his coffee that he’d brought along with him. “I’ve been….good,” he said slowly, figuring there was a better way to start their conversation. “I live with my fiancé, you know. We just got a puppy and the little shit keeps us up half the night. How about…you?”
"That’s good. Me too. I mean, all things considered...” Finding out she had a brother both petrified and invigorated the youngest Ellis, especially considering her track record with male family figures wasn’t particularly noteworthy. “Your fiancé? I guess congratulations are in order then. When’s the big day?” It was a start, learning some semblance of his life beyond being a firefighter. “I’ve got a puppy called Mom who snores, but luckily we’re not in a place where we have to share a bedroom again.” It also let Caroline know that the woman had slept through the night without incident. “Can I be straight with you for a second?”

“Some of the coaches decide that we have this…bonding night every month. Some jackass chose here for tonight, and I was planning on a couple drinks before bouncing.” Riley wasn’t a fan of hanging out with many people; his demons were far too present most of the time. “I’m great company, you know. So what’s your real name?”
"Coaches? You play something? Ah, you were going for the ole polite drinks and then taking off before shit gets weird. I’d say your girlfriend probably appreciates that mentality, but I can tell you don’t have one.” Or at least if he did, she was a far better woman than Caroline to allow him the privilege of spending time alone in a private room with a stripper. “No complaints from me thus far. It’s Sapphire, obviously. You guessed it right the first try.”

“Not unless he starts coming out with a brand new series about aliens, I’m probably gonna have to pass up on the good book.” Katrina snickered. “You’re going to MSG heaven, the home of all those who worshipped take away when trapped in the mortal coil.” Her hips turned as they moved, poorly mimicking some sort of dance– despite the way that her limbs seemed cemented in place, making it less than graceful. “Maybe I should come by and give it a shot.” Caroline’s seriousness prompted her to find her own, reaching for her friend’s hand to twine her fingers with. “You’re gonna find out.” She didn’t have siblings of her own, the thought of one cropping up suddenly was incredibly exciting to her– “It doesn’t. You’re being very composed about all of this, I think I’d be freaking out.”
"I’d read the hell out of that. MSG heaven or an MSG coma? I’ll take either honestly. Consider me a slave to the gluttony of Chinese food.” At the imitation of what Caroline believed to be some variation of a strip tease, she palmed her eyes in mock exhaustion. “Oh dear lord.” Some days she wondered how much different life in Westport would be without Kat by her side, how unbearably lonely she might have lived with only her thoughts as company. “What if he’s changed his mind already? I mean, what if he thinks I’m crazy for sticking by her after what she did to him?” A humorless laugh escaped her then. “I am freaking out, just on the inside. I’ve seen worse shit than a brand new big brother... But it’s like, now that I have him, I don’t want the guy to go away or get scared off.”

“Funnily enough, I haven’t been to many at all. But I’ve seen Fifty Shades. Shitty movie, or a great one if you’re really into spanking. Anyway, is this where you leave me with a drink and no company?”
“Is that so? What made you want to come out to one tonight then?” Closing the door behind them, she led him towards the overly plush couch and shot the man a skeptical look. “You actually went and watched that movie voluntarily? Either somebody bribed you well or you’re a masochist. I’m not performing tonight so I guess I don’t have a reason to leave just yet.”

“I get it, Caroline. I really do. Wanting to make sure she’s okay…it’s understandable. But sometimes people ain’t able to be helped. My ass had to go to rehab – sure, it ain’t a walk in the park, but it helped.”
"Why do people keep saying that? You don’t even know her.” Corey, however, did have extensive knowledge of their mother’s capacity for change. It was minimal at best. “She’s been to rehab, Lance. Half a dozen times... Look, she got clean before and she can do it again.”

“I’m a fan of you, does that count?” Riley’s smirk got a little bigger, and he huffed out a laugh, setting down his empty glass. “Gladly. This better not be to one of those dungeon rooms. That’s not my kink.”
"You don’t even know me.” Not something which would earn her tips, especially when the entire job of a stripper was to exist as a man’s fantasy, but the words slipped out regardless. A wry chuckle left her lips as they meandered through the club towards the back area, somehow imagining a warped sex dungeon behind one of the doors before she pushed one open. “Relax, it’s just one of the private rooms. What kind of strip clubs have you been frequenting?”

He’d told Parker not to worry, walking the way to the bar he’d stopped at after every shift at the station at one point. He caught sight of a blonde head of hair, walking over to her, “Caroline?” he said slowly, rubbing the back of his neck. Did he hug her? Shake her hand? Instead of either of those things, Corey stood there awkwardly, “Hi.”
"Hey,” she replied with a slight turn, taking him in for a second time without either of them weighed down by revelation. “Wow we’re really great at this.” A slight joke to lighten the atmosphere and hopefully mask her own nerves. “How have you been?” Despite the innocence of her question, Caroline hoped that the older Ellis would understand its connotation: how was he after finding out she existed?
