Diversity and Adaptability
Each business and each individual needs to understand where they sit relative to the edge of innovation. Predicting the future is hard work. If you want to get closer to the edge you need to increase the diversity of your capabilities and your adaptability to change.
Prediction is a failing strategy
Organisations making fixed asset investments with long lives often want to predict the future. Individuals choosing where to build a career want to know that their choices will lead to prosperity. It is tempting to seek predictions.
We can’t predict the weather. We are terrible at predicting the future. No matter how much money you spend on analysis, research, futurists, consultants and other sources of insight it will at best give you a partial sense of the direction of change. If you doubt this, go back ten years and look for predictions of what the world will be like today. Humans are simply too creative and our systems too complex for our own future imaginations.
Innovation leaders use two other strategies to manage the uncertainty of what might be ahead. They manage diverse portfolios of opportunities. They build the ability to adapt quickly. Diversity gives you the chance to see some winners outweigh your losing bets. Adaptability gives you the ability to be a fast follower when directions become clearer or change is required.
Build Diversity and Adaptability
Organisations often compromise their diversity and adaptability mistaking present day efficiency for dynamic effectiveness. Individuals often surrender diversity and adaptability in an effort to specialise and under a range of social pressures to conform.
Change will come. Disruptive change will impact companies, industries and roles. Building some capabilities that offer diverse opportunities for both organisations and individuals is important. More important is the ability to learn and to change. Startups design their entire organisation around getting access to capabilities and adapting quickly to opportunities. Organisations with proven business models can add these capabilities to foster growth and become more responsive. Individuals can build their capabilities and their adaptability as optionality for future careers.
If there are capabilities aligned to your personal or organisational purpose, explore them. You never know when they might come in handy later. Most importantly, never surrender your ability to learn and adapt to change.
A personal story
Over a decade ago when I was working as a Regional Manager in a retail bank, I stood in a bookstore and saw a book entitled “Cultivating Communities of Practice” by Wenger, McDermott and Snyder. The title appealed to my life long interest in how people learn and the opportunities to bring people together around knowledge. Reading the book started a journey for me to explore other aspects of community, learning, leadership and organisations.
Roles came along that were off the beaten path and I was offered them because of my diverse interests made me a rare match to the challenges. These roles offered opportunities to practice some of these skills in other contexts like the launch of a Corporate University. I took on side projects like helping to champion a Yammer network and built new capabilities because they resonated with my personal purpose. I couldn’t have predicted these adventures would turn me into a consultant in collaboration, leadership and learning. I was building capabilities aligned to my purpose and I was building my ability to work in new and different contexts. When you add my personal passion for change and adaptation, new career options followed.
This post by simonterry resonates with me. I started my working life at a bank too and now work on #Theedgenhs curating knowledge on transformational change. I am passionate about innovation and personal knowledge mastery. How we can be knowledge catalysts by the process of seek, sense, share and connect with others in this social age. The digital knowledge curator role certainly never existed when I left school, no one could have given me that career advice or predicted the future of work that exists now. I'm not a millennial, but a proud digital immigrant - learning from the community that works out loud #WOL. I share my story to encourage others to connect through #WOL to take a moonshot and dare to be a rebel soul. You never know where it could take you or adventures waiting for you!
Being authentic Found this on Twitter and wanted to share the message. One of the learning points for me in the last two years has been to understand that there will always be people that question what you do. It's important to be authentic and make decisions based on your true values. One of the ways that I have tried to share my authentic self and develop networks around innovation, transformational change & health has been by working out loud. Working out loud is difficult, putting your work online, sharing and contributing with others. The benefits out weigh the fear for me, as the wol community connects generously and in turn I try to contribute. A Story of hope & inspiration
I was given two gifts by @johnstepper when he visited the Horizons team in Coventry this week to talk about #WOL. John and I met on Twitter and he has followed my journey using the tools in his book to embrace a different way of working, living and connecting.
The first gift was a little folded towel elephant, very cute, Japanese and a character of mystery. I was curious. Hunting on the Internet there were lots of sites covering towel folding to make animals, such as elephants. I felt like a crazy detective trying to make sense of the gift, searching through John’s blog posts and where my google search led me. Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter a whole parade of social media posts became dead ends in my search.
This morning I checked my Twitter feed and John had provided the answer. The story of the makenaizou - a creative project for people to help themselves while spreading a message of hope around the world. A story of hope and inspiration - One elephant that has traveled around the world from his maker in Japan to NYC, Coventry and finally to Salisbury. I feel very honoured to have this little elephant and would love to meet his maker.

#EnjoyProject Feeling inspired by John Steppers blog post about not making traditional new year resolutions, but trying something different instead. I have always loved reading blogs about 365 photo, gratitude & happiness projects. So guess it's my turn to take up the challenge & blog about joining with John & sharing my experience through 365 days of making each day count, recognising that even things that challenge or scare me can be enjoyable. My photo above covers a beautiful spot in Cornwall which has a sea pool. I have never been in the pool, but it looks so amazing & has such a great history. It's a challenge that I want to take up in 2015 & enjoy wild swimming in the sea pool next time I visit Cornwall. Looking forward to starting the 365 project & blog about my experiences.
New York City - Wired - Vivienne Gucwa and NY Through The Lens
When I travel, I have staples that I take with me on long-haul flights and one of those staples is Wired Magazine. Always. So, when I was asked by Sony a few months back if I would want my New York photography book to be a part of a Wired Magazine pop-up store private event along with a gallery display of my photography, it was hard to contain my excitement.
Earlier this week, I got to visit Wired’s offices to pre-sign a mountain of my books for the event.
In terms of things I never thought I would be doing six years ago back when I started to dive into the world of photography, signing copies of my books at Wired’s offices ranks up there.
The Design Your World event took place at Wired’s NYC pop-up store in the meatpacking district on December 16th.
The event was open to private guests of Wired Magazine and each of the 250 guests received a copy of my book: NY Through The Lens.

New York City photographer and author Vivienne Gucwa features the landscapes, architecture, and neighborhoods of New York City in her work.
Her work explores different forms of nostalgia like saudade and sehnsucht which both encompass deep longings for places that are unidentifiable but also familiar. She infuses a fantastical sense of nostalgia into her work pushing the boundaries of real and the imagined.

Despite the majority of the books having been pre-signed by me, I also ended up personally signing around 200 books at the event itself! It was so nice to connect with so many people. Seeing their reaction to the book and to the gallery of my photography is something I will never ever forget. What a beautiful experience.
To all of the wonderful people who I spoke to, hugged, took photos with, bonded with, opined about New York city in the snow with, and whose books I personally signed on the spot - you made my year. Thank you.

Inspiration for my writing and photography projects through #WorkingOutLoud
International Working Out Loud week It has been an amazing experience to be part of a global network sharing their work and considering how WOL can be used to support professional development. Everyone's background has been different and our paths would never have crossed without the serendipity channelled by this process. I have also started to read the draft of John Stepper's book which will feature in the new virtual book club from @TheEdgenhs in January. This captures the essence of WOL, the back story and how using this approach can change your life.
