Hi, it's the Anon who asked about the Zodiac Monkey not long ago, sorry to bother you about a fic you're taking a break from but I have more to say! I finished re-reading it, and I think I finally figured out who Shen is!
I'm betting that he is the reincarnation of Chang'e's famously dead husband, Hou Yi.
It all makes sense! Mostly because he was a skilled archer, got turned into a mortal, and he's a celestial that none of the other characters would have met because of how long ago he died (It wouldn't make sense for them to not recognise him if they'd met him in a past life). Plus, our team will be visiting the moon at some point to free Shanzha, so having him join them and get a dramatic reunion with Chang'e makes sense from a writing standpoint.
Anyways, this will be my last ask about this subject, I just had to lay my bet down and I don't think I've seen anyone else suggest Hou Yi as a possibility.
Very interesting theory! Loved your analysis that made you come to your conclusion! We’ll have to see once I get the future chapters out!
Hey Berry just wondering since you also watched Helluva boss, what do you think on the writing? With whole hyarchy and such that's in it, just wondering since that part is always brought up a lot regarding the show's writing so I'm curious on your views on it, maybe also sprinkle in on your views on Hazbin hotel's writing? Oh and also with "Child of (a) Divorce (That Never Happened)" are you going to wait on the next seasons of the show or after season 2 you're gonna start with your own plot with it?
Yes, I have watched Helluva Boss! I honestly didn't expect to enjoy the series as much as I did. Yes, there were humerous moments and Stolas' turned out to be a far more compelling character than I expected him to be. But it wasn't until the series started to explore the other rings and bring up the social hierarchy in the rest of Hell that I started to get hooked. Another thing that I enjoy about Helluva Boss is the different environments we get to see. The different color themes, Hellborn types, and cultures in every ring was a treasure trove for a worldbuilding lover like me. Honestly, Tori's love of learning about Hell's environment, weather, and animals is inspired by my similar excitement of the world that Helluva Boss explores.
Hazbin Hotel, on the other hand, focuses on arguments about the greys of morality, the capacity to change for the better/to be redeemed, and an insight to the workings of Heaven. The show also has a cast of characters that I adore. (I mean, obviously.) Both shows has its flaws, but I'm enjoying the storytelling so far and I trust that the future seasons will answer more questions, develop the characters, and expand on the world. Also, I'm dying to know what's with Lilith, the Exterminations, and Alastor's 7-year sabbatical. They're all connected, I just don't know how.
(Going to be straight with y'all, I will not be touching that mystery with a 10-foot pole in this fic. This story is Tori and Radiostatic-centric and anything else left unanswered in canon so far will be left open for canon to eventually fill in the holes. Even Tori's adventures as an adult will be its own thing.)
Child of Divorce is going to be set mostly on Season 1 and a little bit after. Season 2 is obliterated so, after the Extermination happens, everything is going to be completely divergent from canon. But! I can say that there will be some crossover with Helluva Boss in this fic.
I can see Vox as not exactly perfect in his domestication, even after 7 years. Like every once in awhile he messes up. They used to be infuriating (devestating) occurrences. He's still burned things, shrunk clothes, said things wrong. Sometimes he's too much and he raises his voice when he shouldn't, and his apologies aren't always enough. (But he always tried to give them, because his parents never did and it's still bitter in his mouth.)
But as time went on and he emphasizes (proves) to Allie that she doesn't need to be perfect (like he tried to be as a kid), that she just needs to enjoy her life and do the things she loves, and do her best when she can. He'll love her regardless.
And then Allie stares up at him with her serious little face (too serious and aware for a kid under 10, but he doesn't know that), bundled up in her favorite comfy chair that is still a bit big for her to sit normally in, and says, with his own mismatched eyes locked on him, "You, too, dad."
She looks so much like Alastor in that moment (how the other used to look at him, like he was someone who mattered to him) that his heart squeezes a little too sharply in his chest each and every time. (He can almost hear Alastor whisper in his ear, so clear the memory of his similar, "You, as well, dear.")
Vox was certainly not perfect from the get-go. He had a lot of things to learn and un-learn. Parenthood is not easy, especially for someone who's never in his life prepared for it. In life, he expected to be the breadwinner while a wife would stay back at home to take care of the home and the children. In death, children weren't even in the realm of possibility.
Now, he's stumbling in the dark with vague memories of his strict, emotionally-distant parents being a point of reference of what to do (...not to do?) while Vel and Val are talking into his audio receptors about their own two cents. Ironically enough, Rosie and Carmilla come in clutch with their own pieces of advice.
The best person who helps him through this is Allie. Vox loves her so, so much. She doesn't need to do anything. Loving her was just that easy. Whenever he tries to imagine his little girl going through his own childhood, Vox feels sick. Allie kinda teaches him empathy and understanding by just existing lmao. She also, as your scenario suggests, heals his inner child by assuring him that her love is just as unconditional and free of expectations as his is.
(It's almost like Redemption.)
(Still going to kill people when they get in his way and threaten his little girl, though.)
Was re-reading the newest chapter and realized that Vox might’ve learned to cook in the time that Alastor was gone, if he was cooking for Allie at all. Because I can't imagine that Allie would want take-out all the time. Part of me wonders if he'd completely trust anyone else cooking for her too (as a very protective overlord parent.) I mean beside Val and Vel but I don't think they'd cook either lol.
Take out all the time is ok for grown-ass adult demons, but a child? His baby? She deserves the best and he'll make it if he needs to
It also makes me laugh to picture Alastor being very specific about Tori's food preferences and her favorites, etc, both bc of genuine worry and to nitpick at Vox as per usual. And then the next weekend, Alastor gets just as long a note about Allie's own. It's both as 'revenge' bc how dare you, you prick but also, just as much worry.
It's handwritten (for his old-timer preferences, Vox insists in the first paragraph), and there's so many annotations on it, squeezed into the margins and scribbled in red ink, that it reminds Alastor of Vox's old script notes he'd show him...when they were closer.
Vox would definitely become domesticated by the time Alastor comes back from his 7 year sabbatical. Yeah, he's a CEO, but he's also a great single dad who's making sure his little princess has the best childhood ever. Which also means that he's personally keeping their space clean, doing the laundry, and cooking. Allie's existence and his experience raising her singlehandedly obliterated any trace of that 50's sexism and ingrained belief in gender roles.
Alastor in this AU is completely baffled by all the ways Vox has changed. He's so used to Vox being a constant but so much as changed ever since he left. What he didn't realize was that he himself had changed as well and will continue to change as he gets to know his other daughter.
(Alastor is also affected by how much like Vincent he was now. He insists to himself that this was a bad thing, that this would get in the way of his eventual escape from his leash, but can't help the nostalgia.)
Just a funny thought in my head but since Alastor is already a dad, would he still be singing hell’s greatest dad? I mean he could and damn Luci is gonna have one hell of a roast on this version but i just can’t help thinking that the song would be changed to hell’s greatest grandpa cause you can’t tell me Lucifer wouldn’t love to be a grandpa but Zestiel had started his happy grandchild spoiling retirement plan fair and square so he ain’t gonna lose without a fight, their fight would be legendary 🤣🤣
We'll see if Alastor will be singing Hell's Greatest Dad or not. There's a 50-50 chance he will. Will definitely depend on Lucifer. And, while Zestial is too chill to compete with Lucifer for the "greatest grandad" role, it's still a cute idea to see them competitively dote on Tori.

After reading the latest chapter Child of Divorce, is there going to be a nationwide manhunt over who hired the intruders? By nationwide manhunt I mean Vox and Alastor hunting for who got their baby girl caught in the crossfire.
Oh, there’s going to be a manhunt all right. Whether it’ll be a quiet or loud will depend on what Tori says or does in the next chapter.
The fate of the Pride Ring is in your hands, Tori. No pressure.
I know that you're really into Child of a Divorce rn, but I actually have a question regarding QotM. I was just re-reading the fanfic and I got to the part where the Zodiac Monkey breaks into heaven, and I remembered that he doesn't really appear again in the fic at all. Like, not even an offhanded mention from what I remember.
Now, with a project as big as QotM I get that some characters are gonna get left in the dust over time, especially if they no longer have a huge amount of plot relevance, but will he ever show up again? I can totally see him helping the gang when/if they get around to storming the Celestial realm. Or having a reveal that he was executed, like every other good Celestial in existence.
The Zodiac Monkey wasn’t quite mentioned by name in Act II, but he was a huge player in Yue’s amazing feat of bringing Ao Bing back to life. He was able to convince his Zodiac siblings to give Ao Bing’s body - which was preserved amongst the stars by celestial right - over to Yue so she could have a vessel to put the soul in (which she bartered with Diyu for).
No worries! He’ll appear in Act III but it won’t be that significant of a role since so much is going to happen!
I tried my hand at one of those two-column (contrapuntal) poems! I have a new level of respect for anyone who writes these lol
You can also read it on ao3 where I learned how to code an HTML table for this.
After chapter 5 I gotta ask 2 very important questions, did Rosie brought home the angel head? I mean technically it was a gift from her niece so I say she’s gonna argue abit to bring back that head for a mean pie back home to share (which I’m sorta afraid it’s gonna be delicious to the cannibal colony which made them more eager to join the exorcist war) 😅😅
and also is Vark gonna be stitched back up plssss? Like that was just plain rude and poor Tori just got back from a bad night to find her favorite stuffy be ripped in half, and also I cannot lie i tear up abit cause it’s just so relatable of a moment with Tori not crying and keeping it together until something that’s important to her gets destroyed that it became the final straw on your emotional dam and it ain’t fun fam it really ain’t 🥲🥲
Rosie did indeed bring home the Angelic Head. Not only was it a gift, but an amazing one as well! She just couldn't wait to show it off to the rest of the colony and update a certain someone about what his daughter's been up to - "my, Alastor! Why didn't you tell me Victoire was with her other father? I would've visited!" (The head would, indeed be made into a very tasty pie.)
Vox let Rosie take it since, well, it was out and he had other priorities to focus on. Wasn't too happy about Rosie knowing about Victoire and having an aunt-like position in her life, though.
Don't worry, don't worry, Vark will be stitched back up in the future. He won't remain torn apart. He's Tori's ultimate comfort object, so to see Vark torn apart on top of everything else made her break down. She can't hug Vark to feel better. Thankfully, Vox was there to hug her instead.
Has Vel or Val been up to Vox's suite & seeing items regarding Tori after Tori began visiting the tower? Or was this their first time seeing her room?
(I'm trying to figure why was it all "fear" during Vel & Val wrecking the room based on my last ask. I'm guessing the more they saw & went through the room, the more they think Vox's "delusions" are getting worse, and thus, they fear Vox is going crazy.)
Ever since Vox did some reconstruction on his floor and started getting time with Tori, Vel and Val never set foot into his space. They would've been so confused with all the child-friendly/child-proofing items added to the space. It was their first time seeing her room too.
What Vel and Val felt towards Vox's "delusions" was more concern and annoyance. What they felt when they were in Tori's room was pure fear.
Was thinking about the ask awhile back where you said Allie would get the Catalastor plush...it'd be hilarious if the catalastor plush is how Allie is able to recognize Alastor in the first place bc her dad said that it "Really looks like your other father. It's uncanny. *snicker*" (Rosie had it commissioned and gave it to Allie as a gift.)
And Allie sees Alastor in the hotel for the first time, immediately clocks the resemblance, and inwardly goes: oh jeez, dad wasn't exaggerating. Rosie, you're terrible! You must've been really mad that he left suddenly for 7 years and didn't tell you, his friend, who totally didn't have anything to do with said disappearance!
(She brought it with her on her sleepover at the hotel later and Alastor looks at the thing, aghast and with ears pinned down, bc OF COURSE Vox would give their daughter a monstrosity like that. Why does it have a little felt monocle. Little antlers?? Vox, why?)
Not Rosie gifting Allie the Catalastor plush! (Actually, no, this makes sense. Yes, this is canon now.)
As an Isekai baby, Allie already knew what Alastor looked like and what Catalastor was so she was more baffled that Catalastor made an appearance in this world as a plushie. She unironically loves it to bits though. Vox uses it as a reference whenever he talks about Alastor to her. Val and Vel do not like the plushie. They think it's atrocious and claim that they could feel it staring at them. (Vox: it's a stuffed animal, ofc it stares it doesn't blink you idiots).
Alastor is not a fan at first since he knows Rosie's handiwork when he sees it. But the monstrosity grows on him. It's delightfully creepy, unlike the goofy looking Vark.
