INTRODUCTION

caroline  lives  in  aurora  apartments  despite  her  parents'  successful  jobs  and  the  big  house  they  own  in  moonbeam  gardens  .   they  are  filthy  rich  from  their  oil  factores  in  roswell  ,  and  she  was  spoiled  through  all  her  life  .   from  gucci  baby  clothes  ,  to  extravagant  birthday  parties  ,  to  her  own  black  card  .   though  ,  throughout  her  entire  childhood  and  even  into  the  present  ,  the  one  thing  she  craved  the  most  was  her  parents  love  and  attention  ,  which  she  never  received  .

at  some  point  between  spending  more  than  three  christmas  with  the  nanny's  family  and  her  parents  forgetting  to  call  on  her  birthdays  ,  she  started  to  hate  her  life  .   that  hatred  eventually  developed  into  hating  herself  too  .   she  would  spend  hours  and  hours  looking  at  the  mirror  ,  seeking  for  everything  wrong  in  her  ,  in  her  image  ,  anything  she  can  fix  .   she'd  let  herself  starve  for  days  ,  and  still  wouldn't  feel  better  with  herself  .

that  was  until  she  chose  to  prioritize  herself  ;   she  dropped  out  of  college  ,  left  home  ,  blocked  her  parents  numbers  and  got  a  job  at  the  stalk  market  .   it  took  them  four  months  to  realize  that  she  shut  them  out  of  her  life  .

she  screams  abandonment  issues  with  self - steem  issues  underneath  .   she  thinks  she  is  underserving  of  love  and  that  , even  if  she  finds  someone  ,  they  eventually  abandon  her  .   after  all  ,  she  never  even  managed  to  be  loved  by  the  people  who  raised  her  ,  why  would  she  believe  that  people  actually  can  constant  in  other  people's  lives  ?

as  for  her  eating  disorder  -  she's  doing  better  now  ,  but  it's  still  a  long  way  to  go  and  she  relapses  sometimes  and  go  days  without  eating  .   it's  a  work  in  progress  .

she  still  gets  a  monthly  allowance  from  her  parents  that  she  tries  to  never  touch  ,  but  sometimes  ,  to  make  ends  meet  ,  she  takes  a  little  bit  from  it  .   she  wants  to  return  it  all  once  she  opens  her  own  flower  market  ,  but  she  is  nowhere  near  that  goal  .

she  is  very  flighty  ,  often  showing  lack  of  commitment  and  emotional  intimacy  .   she  hates  the  idea  of  people  getting  too  close  to  know  how  she  feels  or  what  she  truly  thinks  .   she  carries  this  heartbreaking  sadness  that  never  really  goes  away  ,  but  she  bottles  everything  up  so  well  that  no  one  ever  notices  or  hears  about  it  .

          “well, my sweet caro, do you really think they’d make someone who’s in for a petty crime share a jail cell with a murderer?” ziggy stops to ponder for a few seconds, pursed lips as they hum. “i mean, that’s a possibility but don’t you worry, she was in there for a bar fight. bruised eye and all.” at least, that’s what she had told them—and they believed her, of course.

and  caroline  would  argue  ,  remind  ziggy  that  this  is  roswell  and  most  policemen  lack  basic  common  sense  ,   but  they  give  in  and  accepts  the  possibility  ,  so  care  would  spare  her  .   and  a  smile  soon  appears  on  rosy  lips  .   “  do  i  even  want  to  know  what  you  did  to  get  yourself  arrested  ?   can’t  believe  i’m  friends  with  a  delinquent  .   i’m  just  an  innocent  flower  girl  .  ”

MORGAN   ,   CHARMING   .

“yeah  i  do,”  charming  leads  in,  eyes  on  the  other  rather  than  the  little  flame  flickering  between  them,  “i’ve  got  twelve  weeks  left  ‘til  i’m  done  as  a  junior.  i’ve  not  seen  you  around  the  dorms  at  the  station,  though,  lass,”  charming  takes  a  drag,  blowing  the  smoke  off  to  the  side.  her  thick  sussex(ish)  accent  still  very  much  present  as  she  continues;  “so  where  have  you  been  hiding  then?”  teasing  with  a  little  smirk  and  a  twinkle  in  her  blue-green  hues.

she  pushes  a  strand  of  dark  brown  hair  behind  her  ear  ,  a  genuine  smile  appearing  on  lips  .   “  behind  flowers  at  the  stalk  market  .  ”   and  a  chuckle  leave  her  lips  .   and  yeah  -  maybe  ,  just  maybe  ,  she’s  trying  to  flirt  .   because  the  blonde  is  sexy  ,  with  this  grungy  look  and  bad  girl  vibe  .   and  is  that  a  tattoo  in  their  arm  she  sees  ?   hot  .   “  i  have  friends  at  the  station  so  i  know  my  way  around  .   though  i’m  flattered  that  you  thought  these  weak  ass  arms  could  ever  pull  anyone  from  a  fire  .  ”

XIAO   ,   LILAC   .

it’s  like  a  ritual  for  her,  as  the  deadline  approaches  for  the  next  column  of  the  daily  record  she  finds  herself  planted  at  crashdown.  a  light  dinner,  two  espressos  and  an  iced-coffee  later  and  she  feels  like  her  head  is  going  to  explode  from  staring  at  the  screen.  that’s  what  leads  her  outside,  table  held,  while  she  slips  across  the  street  to  stand  under  the  light  of  a  streetlamp  and  she  lights  a  weak  joint,  rolled  in  sweet  bubblegum-flavoured  paper.

it’s  caroline’s  fault  ,  but  she’d  never  admit  to  it  .   fingers  went  to  work  on  her  phone’s  screen  as  she  walked  without  a  care  ,  a  bouquet  under  arm  .   because  well  ,  she  didn’t  expect  a  body  to  be  parked  on  the  sidewalk  across  crashdown  .   “  for  fuck’s  sakes  .  ”   the  impact  propelled  her  a  few  steps  back  ,  she  almost  drops  her  phone  and  absolutely  ruins  the  flower  arrangement  .   “  no  ,  no  ,  no  …    this  is  your  fault  .  ”

          “spent the night in jail yesterday. this lady and i shared a protein bar—she was so nice to me.” they casually comment, picking at loose strands from their ripped jeans. “but what did you do with your sunday night?”

creased  brows  visibly  shows  the  brunette’s  disbelief  -  more  over  the  fact  ziggy  was  potentially  befriending  a  criminal  .   and  yeah  ,  they  were  in  jail  too  ,  so  maybe  they  are  as  much  of  a  criminal  as  the  lady  in  question  .   but  can  you  blame  caroline  for  being  soft  for  them  ?   “  god  ,  ziggy  .   what  if  she  murdered  someone  and  you  were  there  ,  just  sharing  a  protein  bar  with  a  murderer  ?  ”

bard  zips  up  his  hoodie,  the  november  chill  hanging  in  the  air,  and  watches  arrow  dart  about  trying  to  catch  the  leaves  that  rush  across  the  ground  with  the  wind.  “i  bet  she’s  warm,”  bard  mutters  to  himself,  wrapping  both  hands  around  his  coffee  cup  to  bring  some  warmth  and  taking  a  sip.

caroline  nurses  a  heated  drink  herself  ,  though  it’s  hot  cocoa  .   as  much  as  she  loves  the  smell  of  coffee  ,  she  didn’t  enjoy  its  taste  .   “  she  looks  so  happy  ,  almost  makes  it  look  like  it’s  not  44  degrees  right  now  .  ”   mirroring  his  actions  ,  she  takes  a  sip  of  her  hot  cocoa  ,  and  then  inserts  herself  between  his  arms  (  in  a  rather  caroline  fashion  ;   simply  going  under  his  arm  ,  her  small  stature  aiding  in  such  maneuver  )   ,  seeking  warmth  in  a  hug  .   “  how’ve  you  been  ?   i  feel  like  i  haven’t  seen  you  in  weeks  .  ”

WOLFF   ,   JACKSON   .​

“alright, let’s say you don’t have the best of relationships with your parents but they invite you to their annual hanukkah party for the first time in, well, maybe three years and you know they’re only doin’ this because they want to be involved in their grandson’s life but you still feel sort of happy that you’re bein’ included in the family again, despite being the reason you’re not close with them anymore yourself.” he sighs and looks at the person he’s talking to. “in this scenario, what would you do?”

caroline  relates  to  jackson  far  too  much  .   though  ,  well  ,  she  was  invited  for  her  family’s  annual  christmas  party  to  keep  up  appearances  in  front  of  whatever  new  investor  they  want  to  impress  .   she  can’t  tell  if  jackson’s  parents’  reasons  for  reaching  out  are  motived  by  love  at  all  .   and  even  if  they  are  ,  it’s  directed  to  noah  and  not  even  jackson  himself  .   “  honestly  ?   i  wouldn’t  want  my  child  be  treated  the  way  i  was  ,  discarded  the  way  i  was  …  ”   she  trailed  off  ,  realizing  how  painful  and  fresh  it  all  is  still  .   “  so  no  ,  i  absolutely  wouldn’t  go  .   fuck  them  ,  and  my  child  is  better  off  without  grandparents  .  ”

the process of turning a house into a home sure seemed to be a long one. something barbie wasn’t really expecting when settling down in roswell. in her defense, she’d never moved anywhere with the intention of sticking around. in fact, it wasn’t until she had guests over and nothing to entertain them with that she realized just how EMPTY her home was. she’d learned to survive on little – it made the moving process easy. old habits were hard to break. still, she was here at feel good records, looking for something she could play while entertaining if she so desired. “excuse me?” she looks over to the nearest body. “if you wanted to play something while having guests over that says ❛ I’M SOPHISTICATED AND A HOMEOWNER, ❜ what would you suggest? other than abba, of course.”

caroline’s  obsession  for  vinyl  records  makes  her  a  loyal  customer  at  feel  good  records  .   she’s  always  there  after  a  paycheck  ,  spending  more  than  she  should  on  lp’s  .   and  it’s  just  what  she’s  doing  ,  with  taylor  swift’s  red  (  taylor’s  version  )  ,  lany’s  gg  bb  xx  and  kacey  musgraves’  star - crossed  under  an  arm  .   and  she’s  in  search  for  lorde’s  solar  power  too  ,  but  the  task  is  soon  forgotten  when  she’s  approached  ,  a  laugh  leaving  her  lips  with  the  woman’s  words  .   “  oh  ,  god  .   you’re  soooo  asking  the  wrong  person  .   my  music  taste  goes  all  the  way  from  heavy  metal  to  disney  soundtrack  .  ”   though  she  inches  closer  ,  checking  out  a  few  cds  .   “  you  can  never  go  wrong  with  r & b  right  ?   khalid  ,  frank  ocean  ,  rihanna  …   maybe  the  weeknd  or  zayn  too  .  ”

the  bonfires  in  the  old  oil  barrels  take  the  ambient  chill  off  the  night,  charming  steps  away  from  the  chattering  and  chooses  a  seat  nearby  a  face  she  doesn’t  exactly  know.  but  they’re  cute,  so  fuck  it.    “hey  you.    got  a  light?”  she  lifts  her  cigarette  to  her  lips  with  a  smirk.

caroline  exhales  into  her  hands  ,  rubbing  them  together  in  a  vain  attempt  to  warm  them  .   her  eyes  rest  on  the  bonfire  ,  and  it  takes  a  second  to  register  the  voice  originating  beside  her  .   “  hey  -  ”   lips  angle  into  a  smile  .   though  this  time  ,  she  processes  the  other’s  request  quicker  -  with  hands  rummaging  around  jeans  pockets  for  her  matte  pink  zippo  lighter  while  talking  ,  “  i  feel  like  i’ve  seen  you  around  before  .  ”   fingers  smooth  along  the  metal  casing  of  her  lighter  before  guiding  it  to  the  blonde’s  mouth  ,  where  the  cigarette  is  pinched  loosely  between  pretty  lips  ,  flicking  it  alight  with  her  thumb  .   “  you  work  at  the  fire  station  ,  don’t  you  ?  ”

POWELL   ,   BRYCE   .

“that was actually what we’ve been talking about on our way back to the station–but poor girl, doing anything to impress some man, it wasn’t worth it by the way, he’s worse than unseasoned chicken.” the firefighter jokes. caroline has been the one who mostly looked after her after the accident, so bryce could never forget that worry that has been etched on her for months. she promised to be careful for her once she got back on the job. “god, your kimbap is just the best. you make it just the way i like it. but really…care, i wouldn’t know what to do without you, i hope you know that.” bryce gives her a genuine smile, holding her hand and intertwining their fingers for a moment. “bard–” she almost chokes on air, staring up at caroline. neither of them has told her what happened yet. “what do you mean thirst trap? a literal instagram post?”

“  oh  ,  ”   a  pause  .   caroline’s  brows  to  lift  in  utmost  shock  and  disgust  with  the  painted  picture  in  her  mind  .   “  yeah  ,  no  .   no  man  is  ever  worth  reenacting  stuck  porn  ,  let’s  be  honest  here  .  ”   care  could  go  on  and  on  about  this  ,  but  it  was  late  and  bryce  had  a  long  day  ,  so  she  doesn’t  .   “  oh  ,  stop  it  ,  they're  not  that  good  -  ”   and  she  tenses  .   and  it  takes  her  one  ,  two  ,  three  ,  four  seconds  until  she  relaxes  under  the  touch  and  soft - spoken  words  ,  until  she  realizes  it’s  just  her  person  saying  that  ,  the  only  person  she  actually  lets  in  .   “  i  -  i  know  ,  ”   she  mumbles  ,  offering  a  sheepish  smile  as  thumb  slowly  traces  over  the  other’s  fingers  .   it’s  almost  nothing  ,  but  it’s  all  she’d  possibly  give  .   “  i  mean  ,  pretty  much  !   he’s  going  as  tarzan  -  and  with  no  loincloth  ,  i  might  add  .   can  you  believe  him  ?   it’s  like  a  modern  tarzan  with  khaki  pants  ,  from  that  alexander  skarsgard  movie  .   he  sent  a  pic  ,  wait  -  ”   and  she  takes  takes  the  opportunity  to  untangle  their  fingers  and  block  bryce’s  words  from  repeating  in  her  mind  ,  and  fumbles  her  hoodie’s  pockets  in  search  of  her  phone  ,  unlocking  it  and  showing  her  friend  the  picture  .   “  god  ,  he  looks  so  good  …   i  mean  ,  those  yummy  abs  -  ”   and  she  zooms  in  to  prove  her  point  ,  as  if  it  even  needed  proving  .

his free hand lifted as if to plead his innocence , but without a bible or judge in sight it was unlikely his truth would be contested . “ not directly from the kids !! that’s what you get for not keeping an eye on your bowls . if there’s no limit the trick or treaters – me included – are gonna take our fair share , “ once caroline had taken first pick his own hand delved into the sack to pick out anything bright blue in color . some gummies were tossed into his mouth and happily chewed , artificial colorings bleeding through his teeth and staining the pearly whites cerulean . “ i think you criminally underestimate my capacity to eat sugar . i’m single-handedly keeping cosmic candy in business . i love the costume , by the way . “

caroline  can’t  help  but  laugh  .   she  has  a  good  amount  of  hershey’s  kisses  in  her  jacket's  pocket  ,  but  jaden’s  bag  of  candy  remains  huge  in  size  ,  showing  just  how  little  she’d  actually  help  jaden  in  eating  it  all  .   “  god  help  that  little  munchkin  growing  in  juni’s  belly  because  you’ll  be  stealing  their  candy  every  halloween  .  ”   just  now  she  pictures  jaden  doing  the  ‘ daddy  ate  all  of  your  candy ’  theatrical  bit  ,  and  internally  goes  ‘ awwwwh ’   too  .   “  ooooh  honey  ,  i  think  you  overestimate  your  capacity  of  eating  sugar  .   halfway  through  this  bag  you’ll  get  a  stomach  ache  and  just  give  up  -  though  i  really  want  to  see  you  try  so  .  ”   she  mimes  zipping  her  lips  and  throwing  away  a  key  .   “  thanks  !   it  wasn’t  easy  making  this  plastic  jacket  ,  but  i  kind  of  love  it  .   and  it's  cool  that  you  can  see  all  the  contraband  candy  you  gave  me  .   also  ,  you  look  amazing  too  ,  j  !   how  long  it  took  to  do  the  makeup  ?  ”

𝐋𝐔𝐈𝐒  𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐎  .

Luis chuckled. “I know, I know, I work too much.” But it wasn’t easy to quit, he was always reminded that just an extra hour might save an extra life from being send back to a horrible situation. If he could save a family a week, if he could ensure the USA would allow them to stay, he would gladly give his weekend too. He looked away for a bit from her gaze, turning his head this way and that to not be able to see her anymore. “I promise I’ll stop right after I read my emails. I won’t even respond to them.” Just formulate a possible response all afternoon and maybe write it in the early hours on Sunday.

caroline  knows  about  luis’  honorable  work  ,  but  it  doesn't  really  stop  her  from  calling  him  out  when  she  believes  he’s  working  too  much  .   hell  ,  she’d  go  as  far  as  confiscating  the  man’s  laptop  if  needed  ,  but  he  promises  to  just  read  his  e - mails  ,  and  she  takes  the  offer  .   “  all  jokes  aside  ,  you  need  to  think  about  yourself  sometimes  ,  you  know  ?  ”   boy  ,  does  she  know  it  .   it’s  one  of  the  reasons  she  moved  into  aurora  apartments  .   “  do  you  want  a  mimosa  ?   or  some  orange  juice  ?   that’s  -  that’s  all  i  brought  .  ”

𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐀  𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐎𝐍  .

“you know, if i were a worse person, i’d threaten to demote your pay or something for teasing me like that. luckily for you, i’m better than that. i’ll accept it… FOR NOW. but i’m going to get my rightful title back soon enough,” they joke. however, their face falls at caroline’s next joke. they can feel their heart pick up its pace before quickly looking away. “no,” she sighs. “just trying to even the playing field. THAT’S ALL.” their eyes quickly move back to the jenga blocks on the ground as they try to pick up as many as they can. they begin continuing the stack from the top of what was left of the old stack, trying to do it as quick as possible. “oh, definitely my sore loser side showing.” that and she needed a distraction from how out of place she felt, even beside her costume mate.

“  and  why  do  you  think  i  tease  you  this  much  ,  huh  ?   i  know  you  wouldn’t  !  ”   caroline  purses  her plush  lips  together  before  casting  florencia  a  playful  roll  of  eyes  .   “  even  if  you  claim  it  back  ,  i  will  always  have  the  long  lasting  memory  of  you  bringing  the  whole  tower  down  .  ”   the  smile  on  care’s  rosy  lips  takes  a  more  gentle  light  when  she  gets  just  the  kind  of  reaction  she  expects  from  them  :   no  flirt  back  ,  no  eye  contact  ,  just  shyly  responses  .   it’s  a  typical  florencia  move  ,  one  caroline  has  seen  a  couple  times  .   hell  ,  she  even  enjoys  it  -  reminds  her  of  pure  ,  inhibited  high  school  flirtationship  ,  something  she’s  only  seen  in  movies  .   “  i  thought  me  being  terrible  at  jenga  was  enough  to  even  the  playing  field  .  ”   and  she’s  quick  to  grab  a  couple  wooden  blocks  scattered  a  little  far  from  the  tower  ,  bringing  it  closer  .   “  it’s  pretty  satisfying  to  see  you  all  worked  up  about  this  .  ”   or  rather  ,  it  was  sexy  ,  but  care  reckons  she’s  flustered  the  other  enough  for  the  time  being  .
