Aleks huffed in frustration as he stepped back reluctantly out of line. âFine, fine. But you shouldnât have brought me here if you didnât want me to try and win any of the games.â The two turned around and walked off into the crowd of people, the noise around them drowning out any attempt at conversation. He could barely hear Caro. âThe cold?â He eyed her outfit, wondering who in their right mind dressed that way for winter in Toronto. âIâm not giving you my jacket.â Aleks warned, the grin on his face matching his joking tone. âBut we can go back to my car and run the heater.â
âI donât need a stuffed animal.â Caro countered. She followed his lead, nodding in agreement to his offer. âYouâre so, incredibly sweet, by the way, girls love when you donât do nice things for them.â The cold was biting at every piece of exposed skin; at her face, her legs, her hands. She released her grip on his arm and cupped her hands over her mouth, breathing hot air into them and rubbing them together quickly. They couldnât get back to Aleksâs car fast enough -- she was dying to get out of the harsh chill.

âOh, please. I am full-on happy that youâre encouraging my behavior. Given that Iâve always had a weakness for food and all this fried treats are beyond the valley of amazing.â
âGood, because weâre not even halfway through the list of things you need to try. We still have corn dogs, candy apples, chili cheese fries, a cotton candy stick bigger than both our heads, deep fried oreos, churros, and thatâs just on this side of the carnival. If we do it right, weâll either end up in a food coma, or throwing up on the side of the road. Or both.â
gcia:
â i was walking over to the ice rink earlier, and these two middle-aged white men were sitting on a bench, and the first one was drinking cough syrup or something, and the other one gave him a really weird look, so the first one literally just said, â what? itâs medicinal. â â i mean, of course itâs medicinal, but should you even be drinking that much of it? like, itâs an actual medical thing, not mountain dew. you know, sometimes i worry about the world. â
âI wonder what the long term effects of drinking cough syrup are -- are there even any? Have enough people wanted to ingest an unreasonable amount of it for research to be done? Either way, looks like vodka is out, cough syrup is in, as decided by cutting edge trendsetters Rob and Larry.â
austenholloway:
Austen, in her best attempt to be covert, took a long pull from her flask before returning it to her coatâs interior pocket. Normally, the girl wasnât quite as secretive about her drinking. But it was a public all-ages event and she wasnât exactly eager to get arrested for public intoxication â at least, not before the after party, anyway. Suddenly feeling a set of eyes on her, the mechanic looked up with a half-smirk and offered a shrug. âBusted,â she hummed to herself. Then, a little louder, she nodded toward them. âIf you want some, all you have to do is ask.â
âIâm good, thanks.â She offered a smile from where sheâd been standing, before making the decision to join the girl. âAre you in the habit of day drinking?â Caro asked as she slid into the seat beside her, one eyebrow raised slightly.
âThere is something dangerous about these carnivals and itâs all the amazing smells. Iâve ordered enough food for a small army to eat and it STILL isnât enough to satisfy me. If youâre a decent friend at all, youâd put a stop to my madness. I knew I shouldnât have come here.âÂ
âEating too much bad carnival food is the best part of going to one, itâs hardly a reason to complain. And it definitely doesnât warrant me denying you the pleasure of a real, non-european experience for your taste palette. Thank me later.â
âDo you think Iâm too old to go to the Penguin Shuffle?â Julian asked, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he read the carnivalâs pamphlet. With only a short amount of time and a plethora of activities, Julian was cracking down on his plans - saving the best for first. But, a lot of them, in his eyes, were the best. âI mean, I havenât been turned away yet except the lady kind of looked at me strangely when I went to face painting. Thoughts? What are you going to next?â
Caro shrugged. âYou might be a little old.â Her face twisted into a small half smile as Julianâs eyes scoured the pamphlet. âIâve had my eye on a caramel apple since we walked in here to be honest, but Iâm also kind of interested in what they mean by a âone horse open sleigh rideâ, so Iâm torn as of right now.âÂ

Aleks shook his head, getting ready to aim once more at the pyramid of bottles heâd been trying desperately to knock down. âYouâre exaggerating. And this is rigged.â He called out to the person behind the booth, who was doing an extremely good job at ignoring him. Just then, he felt a familiar tug at his arm, and glanced down to Caro. âI canât fix all three of those things at once. Pick one.â
âIâm not exaggerating.â The blonde rolled her eyes. It was amazing how stubborn he could be, it almost rivaled her own. âIf itâs rigged, all the more reason to give it up.â She offered a sweet smile up at him once his attention shifted towards her. âI pick the cold. Iâm freezing my ass off out here, I didnât dress for this weather.â
âListen, I know weâve been here for, like, twenty minutes, but Iâve got it this time I swear. If you care about me at all, youâll let me protect my pride and my self esteem by stepping back, and giving me a chance to win this fucking stuffed animal.â
âTry an hour.â Caro complained. She pushed off from the side of the booth sheâd been leaning against and took her hands out of her jacket pockets to wrap around Aleksâs arm. âIâm hungry, and cold, and you promised weâd go ice skating, so if you care about me at all, youâll give it up now.âÂ
