Aleks huffed in frustration as he stepped back reluctantly out of line. “Fine, fine. But you shouldn’t have brought me here if you didn’t want me to try and win any of the games.” The two turned around and walked off into the crowd of people, the noise around them drowning out any attempt at conversation. He could barely hear Caro. “The cold?” He eyed her outfit, wondering who in their right mind dressed that way for winter in Toronto. “I’m not giving you my jacket.” Aleks warned, the grin on his face matching his joking tone. “But we can go back to my car and run the heater.”
“I don’t need a stuffed animal.” Caro countered. She followed his lead, nodding in agreement to his offer. “You’re so, incredibly sweet, by the way, girls love when you don’t do nice things for them.” The cold was biting at every piece of exposed skin; at her face, her legs, her hands. She released her grip on his arm and cupped her hands over her mouth, breathing hot air into them and rubbing them together quickly. They couldn’t get back to Aleks’s car fast enough -- she was dying to get out of the harsh chill.

“Oh, please. I am full-on happy that you’re encouraging my behavior. Given that I’ve always had a weakness for food and all this fried treats are beyond the valley of amazing.”
“Good, because we’re not even halfway through the list of things you need to try. We still have corn dogs, candy apples, chili cheese fries, a cotton candy stick bigger than both our heads, deep fried oreos, churros, and that’s just on this side of the carnival. If we do it right, we’ll either end up in a food coma, or throwing up on the side of the road. Or both.”
gcia:
“ i was walking over to the ice rink earlier, and these two middle-aged white men were sitting on a bench, and the first one was drinking cough syrup or something, and the other one gave him a really weird look, so the first one literally just said, “ what? it’s medicinal. ” — i mean, of course it’s medicinal, but should you even be drinking that much of it? like, it’s an actual medical thing, not mountain dew. you know, sometimes i worry about the world. ”
“I wonder what the long term effects of drinking cough syrup are -- are there even any? Have enough people wanted to ingest an unreasonable amount of it for research to be done? Either way, looks like vodka is out, cough syrup is in, as decided by cutting edge trendsetters Rob and Larry.”

Austen, in her best attempt to be covert, took a long pull from her flask before returning it to her coat’s interior pocket. Normally, the girl wasn’t quite as secretive about her drinking. But it was a public all-ages event and she wasn’t exactly eager to get arrested for public intoxication – at least, not before the after party, anyway. Suddenly feeling a set of eyes on her, the mechanic looked up with a half-smirk and offered a shrug. “Busted,” she hummed to herself. Then, a little louder, she nodded toward them. “If you want some, all you have to do is ask.”
“I’m good, thanks.” She offered a smile from where she’d been standing, before making the decision to join the girl. “Are you in the habit of day drinking?” Caro asked as she slid into the seat beside her, one eyebrow raised slightly.
“There is something dangerous about these carnivals and it’s all the amazing smells. I’ve ordered enough food for a small army to eat and it STILL isn’t enough to satisfy me. If you’re a decent friend at all, you’d put a stop to my madness. I knew I shouldn’t have come here.”
“Eating too much bad carnival food is the best part of going to one, it’s hardly a reason to complain. And it definitely doesn’t warrant me denying you the pleasure of a real, non-european experience for your taste palette. Thank me later.”
“Do you think I’m too old to go to the Penguin Shuffle?” Julian asked, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he read the carnival’s pamphlet. With only a short amount of time and a plethora of activities, Julian was cracking down on his plans - saving the best for first. But, a lot of them, in his eyes, were the best. “I mean, I haven’t been turned away yet except the lady kind of looked at me strangely when I went to face painting. Thoughts? What are you going to next?”
Caro shrugged. “You might be a little old.” Her face twisted into a small half smile as Julian’s eyes scoured the pamphlet. “I’ve had my eye on a caramel apple since we walked in here to be honest, but I’m also kind of interested in what they mean by a ‘one horse open sleigh ride’, so I’m torn as of right now.”

Aleks shook his head, getting ready to aim once more at the pyramid of bottles he’d been trying desperately to knock down. “You’re exaggerating. And this is rigged.” He called out to the person behind the booth, who was doing an extremely good job at ignoring him. Just then, he felt a familiar tug at his arm, and glanced down to Caro. “I can’t fix all three of those things at once. Pick one.”
“I’m not exaggerating.” The blonde rolled her eyes. It was amazing how stubborn he could be, it almost rivaled her own. “If it’s rigged, all the more reason to give it up.” She offered a sweet smile up at him once his attention shifted towards her. “I pick the cold. I’m freezing my ass off out here, I didn’t dress for this weather.”
“Listen, I know we’ve been here for, like, twenty minutes, but I’ve got it this time I swear. If you care about me at all, you’ll let me protect my pride and my self esteem by stepping back, and giving me a chance to win this fucking stuffed animal.”
“Try an hour.” Caro complained. She pushed off from the side of the booth she’d been leaning against and took her hands out of her jacket pockets to wrap around Aleks’s arm. “I’m hungry, and cold, and you promised we’d go ice skating, so if you care about me at all, you’ll give it up now.”
