Looking up to see a familiar face, a smirk settled across his lips before sliding the freshly poured whiskey in front of the woman. “Your timing is impeccable, as always, Miss Carrow,” he chuckled as he motioned for another drink. “And as for your friend, as long as she’s as gorgeous as you, she’ll never have that sort of trouble.”
Alecto nodded, taking the drink in her hand. “Alecto. Just Alecto is fine, Avery.” Miss Carrow made her feel uncomfortable, like a layer of disgust that coated her everytime she was reminded of her family name. Chuckling at the mention of the friend, she looked at the man beside her. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I’d like to take your advice as assurance.” She took a sip of her drink, eyebrows raised as it travelled down. “You never get used to that burn, do you?”
He turned slowly upon hearing the voice, and almost as slowly took a step to the side. He wasn’t going to say anything, but someone couldn’t stop the words from coming out. “At least we wouldn’t have had to say anything.”
“Great. Now I know that I could have easily just pushed you out of a window in order to the other side of the room. Thank you.” The smile that accompanied that statement looked artificial, like it didn’t belong on Alecto’s face at all. “And now that we are conversing, it would be rude of me to not ask how you were doing, wouldn’t it?”
“Oh, don’t worry about it. I’m not here to start any conversations, Rabastan. In fact, you were just in my way, and I couldn’t exactly shove you out of the way, could I?”
“So...what’s a girl gotta do around here to get the attention of a strapping gentleman, might I ask? I’m just asking for a friend, because all I’m here for right now, is a drink.” Alecto settled her purse on the bar, sitting down beside Avery. It was natural for her to gravitate towards the only person she knew in this place, and so here she was.
The Carrows are not good parents, period. The age old misogyny clearly bleeds into their parenting style; Alecto was a girl, therefore she needed to be a good little girl and go sit in her corner and speak when she was spoken to.
But given that this was Alecto they were talking about, it didn’t happen. Alecto was loud and passionate and she stood up against her father’s awful regime, only to get smacked down again. She was physically abused as punishment, but it only made her want to scream louder.
No matter how she feels about her brother, Amycus is the most important person in her life. That’s her twin brother, y’all! How can she not love him?
Her rebellious streak began to bloom when she joined Hogwarts, something her parents didn’t really want her to do, because education is not for girls. Despite that, Alecto succeeded in her classes, acing particularly in Transfigurations and Potions.
She began experimenting with her sexuality, and she was promiscuous. But she owned that label with pride as she kissed people behind alleys and closed doors, going onto sleeping with her conquests as well.
This was also the summer she was promised to Rabastan Lestrange, an engagement that she decided to break off because Alecto didn’t want to be confined to ideals she had no interest in following. This did not sit well with the Lestranges, or the Carrows for that matter.
Alecto was fifteen that summer, and she almost died at the hands of her father’s cruelty. Truly, she didn’t care anymore about her family. Her mother stood there crying, while her father punished her for being a brat. She almost considered running away from home, had it not been for Amycus. She passed her OWLS with flying colours.
Something inside Alecto was missing when she came back to Hogwarts; there used to be fire, but now she was just cold and empty inside. She still sought the company of flesh and other people, but she no longer screamed. Her temper was now icy, freezing anyone who displeased her.
As soon as she graduated, she moved into a summer house with her promised inheritance, something she had to wrangle out of her father’s greedy palms. She found herself quite liking that power.
These days, that incident at fifteen is water under the bridge. When Alecto decided she was going to join the Death Eaters and follow the Dark Lord’s ways, all seemed to be forgiven. But Alecto dreams of the day she can choke her father to death, often imagining the gruesome ways and trying to be patient that it will come to be, someday.
