The Highland Bowl from Ajax Mountain

The last time I went to Aspen, in 2015, my sister Jess, my mum and I conquered the Highland Bowl (middle of frame). We started among the trees along the ridge of the peak (right hand side of the frame), and hiked for 45 minutes along a steep and, sometimes, narrow track. We slung our skis and boards over our backs with rope, and arrived at the top exhausted. We took our time savouring the view - it felt like being on top of the world - and finally, when we’d worked up the nerve, we dropped in. The snow was powdery and delicious, and the run was incredibly steep. I made my way down slowly, afraid to fall in case I didn’t stop tumbling until I reached the bottom. It was one of the best runs of my life. Unfortunately, this year the snow was irregular and icy, and I believed the conditions to be too dangerous for such an expert run. I’ll do it again someday.
