Unrealistic Expectations: Handling Clients Who Want Cheap and Perfect
Ah, the classic conundrum—clients who want champagne-quality photography on a tap water budget. If you're a photographer, you've likely encountered this: a potential client who expects Vogue-level portraits but balks at anything above pocket change. So how do you deal with it?
1. Know Your Worth (and Stick to It)
Photography is more than just clicking a button. It’s years of skill, expensive gear, editing time, and creative vision. If someone expects perfection for pennies, it’s not your job to make that happen. Be confident in your pricing—you're charging for experience, not just shutter clicks.
2. Educate, Don’t Argue
Sometimes, clients genuinely don’t understand the value of photography. Instead of getting frustrated, explain what goes into their dreamy “simple shoot.” The editing, the lighting, the equipment—let them see the iceberg beneath the tip. A little transparency can turn a bargain hunter into a believer.
3. Offer Alternatives, Not Discounts
If they can’t afford your premium package, suggest a scaled-down version. Fewer photos, a shorter session, or limited edits—this lets them see that quality has a cost while still getting something within their budget.
4. Recognize Red Flags
If a client starts with, "I could take the same photos on my phone..." or "You’ll get great exposure from this...", consider running. Exposure doesn’t pay the bills, and you don’t need to justify your rates to someone who doesn’t respect your craft.
5. Stand Firm and Let Go
Not every client is the right fit, and that’s okay. It’s better to lose a client than to lose money, time, and sanity. The right clients—those who appreciate and invest in quality—are out there.
At the end of the day, you can’t make everyone happy, but you can make sure that the work you do is valued. So keep your rates fair, your standards high, and your patience… well, as intact as possible.
