Finn McMissile x Reader- Long Time Coming
[Summary: After the events of the World Grand Prix, Finn McMissile is returning home to his partner.]
[Content Warning: Domestic fluff, firearms, angst if you squint, human au, reader is pregnant]
It's a late night in Battersea, London. You are sitting on the couch in the reception room, reading quietly. The only thing keeping you company is the occasional movement in your baby bump. You are almost 4 months along, your husband, Finn, leaving about 4 weeks into the pregnancy for a mission.
You know he had a bit of a wreckless streak when it came to his work, not particuarly caring what happened, considering it is common to die in his field. Luckily, when you walked into his life, that changed. He started becoming more aware. More careful.
But this time, he's running behind. He told you he would be back in two or three months, but it is about to become four. You can't help the pang of worry that strikes through you. Did something happen to him? No, you would have found out by now.
Sighing, you close the book and set it on the end table. It's time to go to bed now.
It takes you a moment, but you get off of the couch, shut the end table lamp off, and walk to your bedroom to lie down.
You lie still for a few moments and savor the silence. Not having to do much is boring, but sometimes peaceful. The isolation when your husband is gone, however, is what kills you.
The sound of the door shutting startles you. Your mind goes to the possibility of your husband being home, but for some reason, you cannot let your guard down. It's eleven o'clock at night, for goodness sake!
You reach for your bedside table, where a pistol is resting. You pick it up, the weight present in your palm, as you silently make your way to the kitchen.
You creep down the hallway, gun in hand silently. If it is an intruder, you can't afford to be heard. Eventually, you round the corner to the dim kitchen and are surprised to see your husband.
He sits at the kitchen island, sifting through the mail. His light blue eyes read over the senders as he sets down each one gently.
"Finn?" Your voice breaks the silence.
He has no idea you were standing there, but is glad you were. A smile is etched onto his face once his eyes meet yours.
Finn crosses the distance, but before he wraps his arms around you, he looks down at your hand. He looked up to meet your eyes, eyebrow raised.
"I couldn't take the chance of you being an intruder. It's almost midnight," You reason. He plucks the gun from your hand and sets it on the counter.
Then, he pulls you into a hug. "I've missed you so much," He mutters into the crown of your hair before pressing a soft kiss there.
Finn pulls back and looks down at your stomach. "How's our baby?" He asks you, placing his hands there gently.
"Great, no problems."
"Well, what is going to be a problem is their mother not getting enough sleep at night. We can catch up in the morning," Finn says, putting a hand on your lower back as he guides you both to your bedroom to catch up on some well-deserved rest.
[Summary: Rod, ever the charming Michagan boy, is finally home after three months.]
[Content Warning: Tooth-rotting fluff, Alternate timeline where Rod infact does survive. Human!Cars 2 AU.]
You were in the kitchen preparing dinner. It was small, but sufficient enough for you, considering there was no one else to cook for at the moment. Seeing as your husband, Rod, was out on a spy-based mission, you found no purpose to cook full meals.
A notification pinged your phone. Hoping it was your husband, you picked it up. Instead, it was your best friend posting an engagement announcement on Instagram. You quickly sent her a message, and she sent you one in return.
The two of you went back and forth for minutes, it seemed. During the conversation you were having with your best friend, you started to play a random playlist.
The smell of Italian spices and herbs filled your nose before the smell of burning pasta did. Your eyes darted to the stove from your post at the kitchen island. The water boiling your rotini noodles was close to boiling over the edges of the pan. Gasping, you drop your phone and run to the stove to correct your error.
You were so distracted, you didn't even hear the door click.
Rod slipped through the front door unnoticed, running a hand through his thick, messy black hair. It had been a long three months. Two thirds of that was spent avoiding getting killed by the enemy. But it was over now, and he got to see his wife.
You were standing at the oven with a random Gin Blossom's song playing softly from the phone you dropped on the island moments before.
Completely in the zone, you still were oblivious to the tall, muscular man watching you from the kitchen doorway.
A smile makes his way to his face. He wondered how you were so charasmatic. You charmed the usually smooth-talking Detroit spy into becoming your sweetheart of a husband. No one cracked his shell as quickly as you did. Frankly, he wasn't complaining. At all.
He crept closer, like a predator analyzing its prey. Within moments, he crossed the remaining distance and wrapped his arms around your waist.
You cry out in shock, just about ready to grab the pocket knife from your pocket. But as soon as you inhale that Dior cologne, your shock subsides, and you turn around to find your husband's sharp blue eyes looking down to meet your own. You felt almost guilty for almost going to stab your husband.
Tears cannot help make their way to the brim of your eyes. You were crying before you had even realized it.
"Hey, sweetheart. Sorry I didn't text-" Rod started, but you didn't let him finish as you wrapped your arms around him tightly, like a child with their favorite stuffed animal.
The impact of the hug had him stumble back, but he recovered quickly, wrapping his arms around you in a warm embrace once again.
After a few moments of standing there, taking in eachothers presence, you let go and looked up at him.
He looked tired, usually how it went with missions like this. And he had a bit of stubble. Not that you were complaining, though.
"I missed you," You said after a moment of silence.
"I missed you too," He replied quietly, just taking your appearance in. Your loose, casual outfit in contrast to his more smart attire after a mission.
You returned to making dinner, music still playing softly in the background to fill the comfortable silence. "Are you hungry? I'm making Alfredo," You asked your husband, whose arms had wrapped around your waist as you stirred both pots on the stove.
"Don't have to ask me twice, honey," He replied, pressing a kiss to your cheek. You felt the scratch of the incoming stubble on your cheek, and you couldn't help but jump back and yelp.
"What?" He asked, confused.
"Your stubble," You exclaim with a giggle.
-
Dinner was ate in mostly silence, besides the occasional questions. You would ask vaguely about the mission knowing he couldn't answer much because of how classified it was. The entire time, however, one hand was covering yours across the table at all times.
"All I know is I'm gonna be home for the next couple months spendin' time with my wife," He replied before shoving a forkful of pasta into his mouth as if he had went weeks without food.
A moment of silence went by yet again. "You know, when I was coming back into town, I saw they had that market uptown. If it's still happening Sunday, maybe we can take a trip up," He offered before taking another bite of food.
Your eyes lit up brighter in excitement, if that was even possible. "I'd love to! Quick question."
"Go ahead, hon."
"Do you think I can drive-"
"Absolutely not. You're not driving my car."
"Aw! You know I can drive stick, though!"
"Still. No."
You couldn't help the smile that crept on your face as you both went back and forth about his car, knowing damn well that was his baby. And frankly? You wouldn't change it for the world.
