-Her mother was a music teacher in Pittsburgh and her father was a doctor for the VA

-is a former army field nurse (honorably discharged)

- is a right leg amputee, usually using crutches when home, or a wheelchair to get around at home

-Went to and graduated from nursing school in California (UCLA School of Nursing)

- Volunteered for Médecins sans Frontieres for years as a nurse .
