Medium format shots from my recent trip to Washington. Olympic Peninsula Mount Rainier National Park Made with a Mamiya C22, Ilford PanF+ in Rodinal
This textile mill, consisting originally of 6 main buildings and countless smaller structures built on 23 acres of land, began operations in 1896. It was one of Georgia's largest employers of the early 20th century, employing upwards of 1,000 people from the surrounding areas. The mill supported the growth of the community around it, and a town would soon form around the business. After changing ownership in the 1920s, the mill struggled against the pressures of child labor laws. Some previous employees report children as young as 12 operating the looms and other heavy machinery. Despite legal disputes, the mill continued to support the surrounding community for decades. Operations ceased in 2001 when its production capabilities were deemed obsolete by industry standards. Upon termination, the mill employed less than 300 people.
Recovering the Filmosound 16
During my first trip to the Butler Street YMCA, I spent a long portion of my visit rummaging through the junk of a messy supply closet. One item in particular stood out, a Bell & Howell Filmosound 16mm projector. Despite my fascination in the machine, I knew it’s dimensions would not agree with our point of entry and exit. We reluctantly left it behind.
Several weeks later, we decided to take on the task of extracting the projector from the third floor. Ignoring the fact that it might not fit through the exit, let alone the question of its functionality, we hauled the 30 lb box downstairs, into the boiler room, and finally out into the service alley next to the building.
I’ll never forget the next few hours: after some serious cleaning and troubleshooting, the projector had been brought to back to life. The final test was a successful projection of a McGraw Hill educational film recovered from the David T. Howard School (less than 2 miles away from the YMCA). Despite decades of storage, the last 4 of which consisting of horribly damp and moldy conditions, the late 20th century mechanics refused to give out. Leave a laptop in the same conditions and see how well it works four years later.
Can’t wait to have some fun with this thing!
The Madison Theater of East Atlanta Village opened as a local cinema in the late 1920s. Its history is far from prosperous, spending more time either vacant or as storage space than as an operating cinema.

The Hodgson House is a historic home dating to 1904. It is located in the Fernbank Forest near Druid Hills, Georgia. Despite preservation efforts by Fernbank, Inc., the home remains gutted and in disrepair. Not much information regarding the history of the home exists, other than that it was owned by Mrs. FG Hodgson. It may be appropriate to assume the trustees of the home contributed to the development of Fernbank Museum and Science Center. Canon FTb / Ilford Delta 3200
