Holy Week Processions in Quetzaltenango 2026.

The five most important ceremonial and amazing processions in the city of Quetzaltenango took place on Friday (#ViernesSanto). These processions, named “Buried Lord and Virgin of Sorrows” or Santo Sepulcro, begin at the cathedral and from the churches San Nicolás, San Bartolomé, la Transfiguración and la Merced. They travel the main streets and avenues of the city including the central park. Thousands of people from all over Guatemala and other parts of the world visit the city to watch these beautiful religious ceremonies.

Easter Festival in Xelaju 2026

Handicrafts, flowers and mechanical games are also part of the Easter Festival in Xelaju. People from all over Guatemala and foreign tourists come to visit this famous market where they are able to shop for handicrafts made of wood, aluminum and mud clay. There is also a park where children can play with their mechanical toys.

La ciudad de Xelaju comenzó a celebrar la Pascua (Semana Santa) esta semana con un mercado callejero cerca del cementerio local. Cientos de personas visitan las calles para degustar las comidas ancestrales tradicionales preparadas para esta celebración. La gente también puede comprar pescado seco (pescado seco), dulces, roscas (pan) entre otras cosas.

Easter Market in Xelaju 2026

The city of Xelaju 120 miles away from Guatemala City, starts celebrating Easter (Semana Santa) this week with a street market near the local cemetery. Hundreds of people visit the streets to taste traditional ancestral foods prepared for this celebration. María is also a Mam Teacher at Casa Xelajú.
