Ethan’s character introduction in ‘Bad Timing’ as him visiting his mother in the hospice and not wanting to leave makes so much sense for his characterisation. His sense of duty, personal responsibility to others that will go on to heavily inform his relationship to Cal (who’s introduced in the next episode).

Watching a good old British soap is making me miss serialised television. What do you mean we get two part episodes, extended arcs, year long series and not dragged out miniseries that should have just been a mid budget movie.

Some moments so far in Casualty that I’ve found pretty shocking/surprising/funny and clearly must have erased from my memory when I first watched.

1. Ash telling Lily that Sally had died as punishment for ignoring his instructions! And prior to that dodging Lily’s drunken kiss at the Valentines party (as he should) only to actually want her romantic advances once she seemed completely unbothered by the awkawardness of it all and seemingly not attracted to him. Let’s not forget that Lily was also his mentee.

2. Adding to Ash’s messiness as the character was him finding out that his daughter was in a relationship with her maths teacher and not so much blinking an eye.

3. Perhaps the most shocking thing for me so far was Cal sleeping with a 17 year old patient. Now in the episode, she does lie to him and say she’s 21 but even after the age reveal, Cal still insists she’s an adult.

4. Lily being incredibly judgemental to an obese patient and then taking credit for spotting a chest murmur which Rita finds just so she can score some points with Connie (who becomes her mentee later at one point)

5. This was more enjoyable than shocking but Connie joining the Emergency Department. This did leave me with some questions in terms of the realism like whether it’s common for surgeons to transition into emergency medicine. I also never watched Holby City growing up but she is definitely a welcome addition to the cast.

6. Robyn stepping on a rake trying to chase Lofty after finding him in her house (which is actually how he gets his nickname).

Decided to watch Casualty on pure whim since I was bored and needed some nostalgia.

I’m rewatching from series 28 (specifically from the episode when Ethan joins Holby) since it’s the one I remember most clearly from childhood and I’m pleased to say it still holds up really well.

I also think series 28 is a good starting point with the introduction of characters like Ethan, Cal, Lofty, Lily (if I’m not mistaken).

Soaps in general can have an uneven quality in terms of writing, acting etc but so far I’m having a good time.
