I haven’t been on dogblr in a while because I’m just living my life and all...and then today I realize why I’ve been avoiding it...

So much VENOM in people. About dogs! 

Cash is healthy and happy but I don’t know if we’ll continue to update the dogblr as it just brings me down to see people fighting on the internet.

Quick story: 

Cash ate an entire stick of butter this weekend. 

He did not ask permission to do this. Probably because I would have said no.

He somehow managed to take the entire glass butter dish with him to his bed. 

The dish remains intact. 

I’m only a little upset because he had diarrhea for a day (including the wee hours of the morning), but otherwise, I’m mostly impressed.

Having a dog is a privilege. If you can’t handle a shelter dog then sorry don’t get a dog? If you need a service or therapy dog, that’s one thing but we do not need to create more demand on purebreds. It seems selfish to be like “no, I NEED a dog and since I can’t handle one from the shelter I’m going to create demand for unnecessary dogs.” anyway…….

And all these “responsible breeders” that op is talking about…the ones trying to breed out defects…guess what - INBREEDING!

Like, purebreds are fucking genetically modified used-to-be mutts that are now way more prone to disease. So, :) okay go get your purebred dogs from “responsible” breeders…

Oh my god. So because I’d rather not spend every waking hour dealing with the health issues of a mutt and the mental instabilities and the neurological problems and the behavioral problems and the otherwise horrible baggage that comes with shelter dogs and because I love one breed which fits my personality and lifestyle more than another and because I plan to work my dogs at one point I don’t DESERVE to have a dog?

…can I make a small but rather significant request about the way we frame and discuss this issue?

In our defense of responsible breeders and dismantling of sweeping generalizations, can we please not use the same simplified persuasive devices we hate to suit our own rhetorical purposes? When we articulate the (completely valid) choice to purchase purebred dogs, can we please do so without employing hyperbole to paint all mixed breeds/mutts as neurotic, disease-ridden, problem-filled, genetically addled messes?

I hope this doesn’t come off as me targeting anyone; that is not my intent. This theme in dogblr discourse has troubled me for a long, long time, particularly as it relates to this topic, and particularly when peer-reviewed studies and population genetics point to just how complex this issue is. This is an analysis of the most extensive long-term study on mixed vs purebred health that I know of – a 30-year project documenting incidences of 24 genetic disorders among 27,000+ dogs. The findings:

No differences in expression of 13 genetic disorders were detected between purebred dogs and mixed-breed dogs (i.e. hip dysplasia, hypo- and hyperadrenocorticism, cancers, lens luxation, and patellar luxation)

Purebred dogs were more likely to have 10 genetic disorders including cardiomyopathy, elbow displasia, cataracts, and hypothyroidism

Mixed breed dogs had a greater probability of ruptured cranial cruciate ligament.

It is inaccurate to suggest that mixed breeds are unanimously healthier than purebreds, but it is also inaccurate to suggest the opposite.

I agree streetdogmillionaires .  These are conversations that need to be had but I wish they were presented more objectively and less emotionally.

Yeah, when I volunteered at the shelter and people would ask about the dogs’ health, I’d always say “Because they’re mixed breeds with uncertain backgrounds, we can’t really say anything for sure. It’s true, though, that mixed breeds tend to be more healthy than puppies you’d buy in a pet store.” I was always very careful with how I worded it. I’m a shelter volunteer and a supporter of rescues. I will always promote adoption and rescue and animal welfare. I will also always support responsible, reputable breeders who breed because they want to improve the health and temperament of their chosen breed (or breeds). Just because a person is pro-breeder or pro-rescue doesn’t mean they need to be anti- the other. I wish more people could see that :(

If I see anyone hating on the idea of adopting a dog vs. buying from a breeder, or defending their choice by comparing it to conceiving a baby instead of adopting a baby, I can no longer follow your dogblr. I’m sorry. It just seems a little crazy to me. Last I checked they didn’t put children in foster care to sleep (FOREVER) for not having a family. 

Just live your life and be happy about your lovely dog, WHEREVER you got it from, instead of saying silly things. Like I’ve said before, you do you...but I ain’t gotta do it with ya. This is coming from someone who GOT their dog from a breeder. And my next dog will 100% be a rescue. 

I really want to enjoy the dogblr community...it’s hard sometimes. 

P.S. There are a lot of purebreds in shelters, ya just gotta look...or care!
