Freezing Point of Sugar and Salt Solutions
Introduction:
     The purpose of this lab was to calculate the freezing point constant of water, to observe the freezing point of sugar solutions at different concentrations, and compare a salt and sugar solution of the same concentration. The hypothesis for this experiment is that with the larger concentrations, molality, of sugar the lower the freezing point constant of water and salt will have an even lower freezing point.
Colligative properties are those that change depending on the number of particles of solute in the solution (French et al, 70). Â The number of dissolved particles in a solution affect the freezing point and boiling point. The more dissolved particles there are in the solution, the higher the boiling point and the lower the freezing point. This change in boiling point and freezing point can be calculated by using the following equations where the change in temperature (deltaT) equals the vanât Hoff factor (i) multiplied by the freezing constant of the solvent (Kf) multiplied by the molality (m) of the solution:

m=moles of solute/kilograms of solvent
The vanât Hoff factor is based upon the number of ions in each compound. For example, NaCl, salt, has two ions and so the vanât Hoff factor is two. However, for nonelectrolytes, sugar (C12H22O11), this factor would be one because there are no ions in a covalent compound. The sugar solutions represent this, a sodium chloride solution was used to be a comparison model, and a water solution is used as a control group.
A dry ice bath was prepared after all of the solutions were made. The solid carbon dioxide, dry ice, is -78.5°C and sublimes at room temperature.(French et al, 71). Caution was used in the lab because of possible inhalation of the carbon dioxide gas is dangerous and if touched causes immediate frostbite.
All of the data and temperature changes were be recorded by the MeasureNet system in the lab. The curves of the graphs were used to determine the freezing point of the solutions.
 Procedure:
1.    Calibrate the MeasureNet temperature probe with water by connecting it to the station and preparing a beaker of distilled water. Press the ON/OFF button, press MAIN MENU, press the TEMP V TIME, then select CALIBRATE. Enter the temperature of the room as 22°C and insert the probe into the water, wait for the probe to settle to a temperature and press ENTER To get to the graph, press DISPLAY.
2.    Use a balance to get differing masses of sugar ranging from 1-10 grams. Use a weigh boat on the balance and tare it so the scale is at 0 before the sugar is measured. Then record a chosen amount of sugar, do this 4 times.
3.    Use 25 mL of distilled water in a graduated cylinder, record the volume, pour into one beaker, and then add the sugar. Use a stirring rod until all of the sugar dissolves and then pour 5 mL into a test tube.
4.    Repeat step 3 until there are 4 sugar solutions, all the test tubes labelled with the different concentrations.
5.    Calculate the molality of one of the sugar solutions and make a salt solution to match the concentration. Record the molality and the grams of salt required.
6.    Repeat step 3 for the salt solution with the numbers calculated in step 5.
7.    Put 5 mL distilled water into another test tubes for a control group.
8.    Produce a dry ice bath by mixing 50-60 grams of rock salt with 200 mL of distilled water.
9.    Get a 400 mL beaker and put approximately 150 mL of dry ice cubes into it, by using tongs, DO NOT TOUCH, and then pour the rock salt solution, Step 8, over it.
10. Start the trials with the distilled water, then the lowest sugar concentration to the highest, and the last being the salt solution.
11. Start the MeasureNet graph by pressing START/STOP, and put the probe into the 5 mL of water test tube, then place the test tube in the dry ice bath. Once the graph plateaus, press START/STOP. Then save the trial by pressing F3/FILE OPTIONS, SAVE, then name the file,â001â.
12. Repeat step 11 with 5 mL of each sugar solutions and the salt solution.
13. Save the trials just like step 11 but name the files, â002â, â003â, â004â, â005â and,â006â respectively. Follow step 10 for which trial to start next.
14. Make sure to check with the TA to see if the trail does not need to be repeated for better results.
15. Pour the waste in the sink and clean the used equipment.
 Discussion:
     The purpose of this experiment was to observe the effect of varying concentrations of sugar and one salt solution had on the freezing point depression constant. The greater the vanât Hoff factor and/or molality of the sugar concentration will cause the solutionâs freezing point to decrease. For the distilled water, the freezing point was calculated to be 0.049°C. Using the freezing point of water, the freezing point of solution, and the molality of each solution, the values could be found.
The solutes of the sugar solution were 2.0050g, 4.0008g, 6.0008g, and 8.0084g. In respect to the solute values the molality and freezing points were found to be: 0.234 molality and -2.28°C, 0.468 molality and -0.557°C, 0.701 molality and 1.93°C, and 0.936 and 2.99°C. The average value of the sugar solutions was 1.4(°C/m). The freezing point depression constant was actually -7.8(°C/m). The salt solution contained 0.3422g of NaCl and had a molality of 0.234, matching the first sucrose solution. The freezing point of the NaCl solution was 6.03°C and the theoretical freezing point was 3.69°C. The percent error in the calculated average for the sugar solutions was 24.7% and for the graphical value it was 519%.
The data recorded and calculated illustrates that the higher the concentration and molality of the sugar solutions, the more the freezing point was lowered, confirming the hypothesis and completing the purpose of the experiment. However, the percent error calculated doesnât support the hypothesis because of the graphical errors.
     There are many potential sources of error for this experiment. One of the sources of error was losing contents from the weigh boat to the beaker because substance can stick to the boat, this could cause a wrong recording of grams used, thus incorrect calculations. A method to avoid this is to carefully scrape all of the solute off of the boat and into the beaker. Another source of error was not having the solution fully enveloped by the dry ice bath or shaking of the probe in the test tube. If either happened, then it would have affected the graphs produced in MeasureNet and the freezing point depression/temperature readings. This could have been prevented by having a hole in the dry ice for the tube or having a pair of tongs or clamps hold the tube in place. A last source of error was the solution was not fully dissolved before transferring it to the test tube. This could have caused a different molality of the solution to be calculated than what it was suppose to be. This could be prevented by making sure to stir with the stirring rod and swirling the solution before pouring it into the test tube, checking that all of the solute is visibly dissolved in the beaker and test tube.
 Conclusions:
From this experiment I have learned that different solutes produce different freezing points and how the amount of particles in a solution can change the freezing point of the solution. This experiment made this clear to me because it takes a larger amount of sugar to decrease the freezing point more than salt. This has to do with the vanât Hoff factor being 2 in salt and 1 in sugar. Salt can decrease the freezing point with less mass because it is an electrolyte and will completely dissociate into 2 ions. Sugar, on the other hand, is a nonelectrolyte and will stay as 1 ion, it does not dissociate in water. This experiment would be better if there was a way to hold the test tube in place of the dry ice or a bigger range of concentrations to see what happens on a larger scale.

What is your connection to your subject?
The connection I have to my subject is that I am a woman in the STEM field. My family and other people have looked at me wondering why. Some individuals I have encountered have actually told or tried to convince me to switch to something âmore suitingâ for a young woman. So I feel like this is a substantial difference in society that needs to be addressed.

What do you see as your role in the film? Will you be behind the camera? In front of it? As a voice over? Explore your possible roles and explain.
As the author/producer of the documentary, I feel as if I should be stating facts and be the voice over in the film. I already have subjects that can tell their experiences and be the people of this film. If I was in front of the camera, I feel as if it would make the documentary too personal to me and I need to be able to state facts and be objective. Which I am connected to the subject but the focus should be the general difference, not just my own.
Audience:
How do you expect your audience to react to your film? How do you hope they will react?
I expect my audience to be mildly surprised at the information I will have in my documentary. I hope that my audience will be more open to less gendered stereotypes when it comes to women majoring in the sciences and mathematics. The audience will be other college students that may not be aware of this difference unless it personally affects them. So I hope to make this distinction known amongst other students of varying majors.
What rhetorical tools will you use to connect with your audience (i.e. forms of pathos)?
The rhetorical tools that I plan on using is facts from little girls being pushed away from the STEM majors. Forms of pathos that could be utilized for my subject could be the sympathetic and empathetic experiences of my interviewees. Another way I plan to connect to my audience is to use facts from studies done and explain the experiment.

What does documentary allow you to do with this subject matter that you couldnât do with writing?
A documentary allows you to be able to get the emotion behind people's stories. Writing is able to do this too but it is usually much more difficult to accomplish. Documentaries also allow the use of visuals without having to explain every detail in writing and everyone imagines differently so this is able to provide a photo for the audience.
What do you hope to communicate as your overall message in this documentary?
My overall message will be,âWomen need to be encouraged when pursuing a STEM major.â I want this to be the main message because women deserve to be encouraged and stereotypical assumptions shouldnât make people doubt women in STEM fields.
Purpose:
What is your purpose in making this documentary (other than that it is a class assignment)?
My purpose in producing this documentary is to make my audience aware of this problem that I just happen to be apart of. This documentary is for documenting the difference between men and women in the same fields and then women in and out of the same fields.
Why and how did you choose this specific focus and purpose?
I choose this specific focus because it is something I am deeply apart of. The focus came to me while writing this assignment actually because I had not wrote out all of my reasoning until this assignment. This focus just feels right because my topic is an example of an even bigger subject.
Context:
What is the context of this film? (i.e. the larger framework for understanding it)
The context of this film is that gender roles affect most, if not all, of society.
How does your subject help you understand the larger context better?
My subject helps understand the larger context because it is a huge example of it. My subject shows gender roles in a college setting going into an adult career.
Limits:
What problems do you anticipate with getting the information you are looking for from your subject?
I anticipate my interviews giving me more information than what will fit in the expected time frame of the documentary. I also anticipate having to infer studies on my subject because it is a very generalized topic. I will be able to edit the video though to make the most useful information in the documentary.
What will you do if your subject gives you information that is unexpected or doesnât seem useful?
If there is unexpected or useless information I would look into more specific cases of my subject. If it was unexpected information out of my interviews then I would edit in or out of the documentary.

I chose to use the information from this teachers association website because I wanted to make a point about an important woman in the science field. To support that women have always been apart of the sciences and technology even when they werenât seen fit to play that role. Rosalind Franklin was the woman who led Watson and Crick in the direction of the shape of DNA when she had used x-ray crystallography to figure it out. Only after her death was she rewarded for assisting finding out the structure of DNA. This information gained from this article makes my document more credible. It is an example that helps prove my statement.

It gives information on how women feel in their career due to the biases in their environment. This is good for my piece because it gives me another way to approach my topic with credibility.

I chose her because of her eagerness and involvement with the Women in STEM.

Courtney is another undergraduate student at the University of Kentucky, majoring in chemistry and minoring in physics. Last year she had to do previous research on gender roles. My topic has heavy gender role tones and some statistics. The reasons that the number of women in STEM are low are because of gender roles. Her research and understanding of these roles and how they work in society can make credible additions to my piece and this is why I have chosen to interview her. Also, because she is aspiring to be a successful women in a STEM field as well.

Stigma on Women in STEM
Abstract:
When you hear the names Lewis and Crick you think of the people that found the shape of DNA; when in truth a woman found the shape through (crystallography x-rays), her name Rosalind Franklin. (Braun) Throughout history women have always been steered away from the sciences and have been told that they are trying to do âa man's workâ. In todayâs society we see more and more women going into the fields of STEM; I am one of these women. I feel empowered to know that women like myself are becoming great scientists and being equal to men. Women should be able to choose what career they want to pursue. Even though there are more women becoming involved in the sciences there is still a stigma about a woman choosing that path. People, even family, judge young ladies who choose a STEM career path. A personal example was when I told my uncle that I was going to be a biologist/virologist he looked bewildered and asked me, âDon't you think you should do something else with your life than that?â. I answered with a âNo, I think this is perfect for me and I can be just as good or if not better than any man in this field and so can the other women in STEM fields.â
Treatment:
For a long time women have not been able to reach their full potential in society. In the past, our society has been typically viewed in a patriarchal way and that leaves the women to be under men. Currently, we have made progress in destroying the strictly âman-ruledâ norm and have made great leaps and feats in equality. Although even with that being said, an area that is still seen as a manâs work is the STEM fields. Jobs and academic subjects that are science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are what represent STEM.
This is an important issue and needs to be produced and discussed because with our evolving society, women are not having as many kids and going to work, and thus some going into STEM fields. A woman's success rate is substantially lower than a manâs because women are not given the support and push they need in their decisions or interests. (Tooke) Women are not listened to in place of men in work settings, and since there are few women in these fields it causes women to be secluded and marginalized in the profession. Statistics show that 76% of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics degrees are usually earned by men and 24% women. (Tooke)
One person that I will be interviewing is an introduction to biology professor, Claire OâQuin. I will be asking her if she has had any struggles as a female professor and what it was like on the journey to get where she is today. I hope to find a credible story from her and challenges she had to face as a woman the field of science. I also might be able to interview another professor, Lisa Blue, in the department of chemistry. These professors have been in their field for a long time and they are bound to have experiences with the stigma on women in STEM fields. They are also an extremely credible recourse because of their experience and not many people would doubt what they had to say.
Then I will be bringing in two current undergraduate students because female children and teens are also deterred from choosing STEM majors. I will be interviewing Kendall Rump and Hannah Dykes. Kendall is an ambassador of the University of Kentuckyâs own âWomen In STEMâ group and a biology to neurobiology major. Hannah is a chemical engineering major and one of the only girls in her classes. I carefully selected these two women because I feel that they have so much to contribute to society but face judgement by other people and social norms. I will ask them when they decided they wanted to study science and what the reaction was of the people around them. Iâm going to ask them if they have ever doubted themselves because they are just girls trying to have earn a STEM major. Another thing to ask is if people encourage them at all and what percentage of that is men or women?
After being able to obtain the degree women face hardships into their careers because they are women. A study demonstrates that there are several biases on women after they enter their career path. They have to prove themselves twice as much to be accepted and in math and engineering related fields it is shown that a man is more likely to be hired than a woman. Women are seen as feminine but expected to be masculine in those fields to be taken seriously. Females usually have to isolate themselves or be harsher to other females because all of them have gone through competition and judgement and they unfortunately pass these onto new female-co workers as well. These judgements on women in these careers and on women in any career should not exist. âThese five major patterns of bias mainly function as implicit biases, reflecting stereotypes people may not realize they have. But we also found plenty of evidence that old-fashioned, explicit racial stereotypes are alive and well.â (Williams)
In conclusion, it would be beneficial to make a documentary and speech regarding the bias and stigma on women in STEM fields. Women are equal to men and should be able to study what they desire. Regrettably this is not the case and women are pushed away from these fields from childhood to adulthood. When the women in STEM fields make discoveries they have to make sure to work twice as hard or their effort would not be seen or rewarded just like the famous Rosalind Franklin. I feel like this documentary would help shed truth onto the gender role bias but more specifically in the STEM fields.

Dear Megan,
As a requirement for the University of Kentucky, I took WRD 110 with you. When I learned I had to take WRD 110 and WRD 111 for the core requirements, I was not extremely thrilled about it. I am not very passionate about writing or presenting but I do believe I understand the necessity of these skills. I would rather read novels than write or present. So when I walked into this class on the first day, I was not the happiest but with your energy and view of the class goals, it changed what effort I put into doing the assignments that I didnât exactly enjoy. Your personality was refreshing and you were extremely lively and understanding and that goes a long way in a teaching profession.
The first assignment was the âI Believe In,â speech. This was a great opening assignment to learn about students individually. When writing for this assignment I was really torn about what approach I wanted to take. I didnât know if I should take a serious approach or a relaxed one. I decided to go with the relaxed route to keep my composure in front of the class. Certain things I would have done differently is actually look at the note cards I had prepared and tried to control my posture while presenting. I had shifted on my feet due to nerves and it was distracting to what I was saying. This project didnât need many resources because it was individually based and that is one of the aspects that makes this an important first assignment, it gets our feet wet to presenting while itâs not a hard subject to talk about.
One of the most interesting homework assignments Iâve had in my college career was running a tumblr blog for this class. I had prior experience with tumblr and I was thoroughly pleased that our homework assignments were self-reflecting on a blog page. One thing I would have changed about how I maintained my blog is to do the reflections as soon as possible instead of waiting because then I would forget how I felt during a discussion or assignment. One thing that I executed well I think, was tagging the assignment names to the posts. It made it easier for me to navigate and see what assignments I did or didnât do. This homework didnât always need resources either, I felt it was straightforward and the only time that there were resources used is when citing something specific for a post.
The other assignments, the project pitch, annotated bibliography, outline and storyboard, the visual speech, and the documentary, are all gravitational and important to the final documentary. The project pitch was an exceptionally hard assignment for me because I had no clue what I wanted to do for a video and presentation. I feel like if I would have shown more active concern or went to some professionals I could have picked a more interesting topic for my classmates. I decided to stick with a general and personal topic as well and I think that hurt me because I wasnât able to focus on one problem in my subject entirely.
The annotated bibliography and outline were easy for me because I save sources and put them in easybib and that helps me keep track of my sources. I feel as if the bibliography helped many students organize their sources and topics of discussion for their powerpoint and documentary. I had trouble again presenting the outline but I felt that it was better standing behind the computer and going through the powerpoint.
The storyboard was interesting and kinda fun to do. I like to draw and this let me make sketches of what I wanted my documentary to look like. A weakness that I had was I did not clearly read the syllabus about the storyboard and I had missed critical points for that but I have learned from this mistake. I would have tried to put in more detail in the ones that I drew in hindsight of this project or explanations in the project.
The visual enthymeme speech was also one that was similar to the first assignment. I liked it because you were able to delve into your thoughts and conclusions on a picture that was related to the documentary topic. It is interesting to see the differences in what people conclude from photos. If I had the chance to change something on this assignment I would have practiced my speech at home a bit more. I felt as though I was not speaking clearly to my peers but I did use the notecard this time without using it as a crutch too much. The resources used was the entire internet as long as the picture was allowed and credited to be used.
The documentary has been the focal point of the entire semester and all of the smaller assignments has lead up to it. I was pleased with my first cut documentary except with the shakiness of the camera. I tried to edit that as much as possible but it did not work like I would have hoped. One thing I think that would make this assignment easier to do for students is to have a small video due maybe in the middle of the semester so students can get used to the program or software they need to use. I know it was difficult for me to adapt to the Premiere app and the Media Depot did assist all the students learning it; it was an amazing resource. The Media Depot actually helped me develop interviewing and camera skills I didnât know were easy to manage. For example, the lighting in an interview matters because it can make the entire mood of the film change. A problem I ran into specifically with my documentary was that my focus was really broad. I had to cut a lot of information out of my documentary because there was so much of it and I didnât want it to be too long. To be more successful in the future, I think I need to know the program better. I was really limited because I would get frustrated and it took hours to understand what I was doing. The best way to master something is to practice it and I tried to just jump in and edit my videos.
Overall, I am glad that this is a core class. I discovered a lot about writing, presenting, and most importantly adapting to something new. I think I came into this class with a negative attitude and I am leaving with a positive one. Thank you for being such a fantastic professor.

Project Pitch Reflection
I will post a photo shortly of my highlighted Project Pitch but one thing that is not working for me is the train of thought my paper has. I feel like I jump topics too quickly and I need to structure and transition better. My paper needs to be improved a lot before I can make this into a Final Project/Documentary.
Midterm Reflection
Even though I do not enjoy writing, I find myself really liking the professor of the class and how she treats her students. I do not think theres any need for advice on improvement because she is overall one of the most fantastic professors Ive had. This semester is going well so far but I find myself struggling slightly with some mental issues. I will continue to push through though. One thing I need to do is stay on top of my work so I am not writing this the day it is due. (Lol.) I have not been fully open with my peers and I think I should speak up more but its really hard but the presentations help. My favorite project so far has been the 'I Believe In' speech because everyones' subject was really serious except for mine and another persons, so it was really funny. I have only missed class once and that was to study for a Midterm exam and other than that I do not plan to miss any others unless unseen events pop up of course.
Presentations - Day 2
Amber Ogle has a good topic that is really popular right now in this society. Her topic was feminism. She uses different women as sources and they range in orientation and I think that is powerful because feminism is about all women. She has a song from a popular music icon, Beyonce, that brings one of her speech sources into it and I think that is really nice. She also used a scholarly source, a professor in gender roles. She was dressed well and she really tried to make constant eye contact with her audience.Â
Presentations - Day 1
Sabrina had a very good presentation. She would walk away from the computer and talk directly to the audience. She also looked very presentable herself, not too fancy but not in sweatpants. Sabrina had an interesting topic as well, how people with special needs go about their daily life, not many people think about this topic at all. I believe her presentation was the most effective because she did not ask questions about her topic, she knew what she was going to do and how to get her information. She made everything extremely clear without being indecisive.
Presidential Debate
One thing I think they both did well:Â Hillary Clinton: She stayed calm when Trump lost his temper during the debate. Spoke clearly. Donald Trump: Made compromises with Hillary, like releasing his files if she released her emails. It might have been a false statement but he still tried? One thing I think they both did bad:Â Hillary Clinton:Â Donald Trump: He would not answer questions at all or clearly. He spoke gibberish sometimes and did not make any sense.
They both interrupted each other several times and it seemed like an out of control game show. They both also had attitudes and faces. Overall I think Hillary won the debate.
The Queen of Versailles
At the beginning of the documentary I did not like the family at all because they were going above and beyond for this house more than they needed. Throughout the film though I appreciated that it portrayed other sides of the story but it stuck to one focus point, the woman. I want to employ this affect into my project pitch paper.Â
Music
My favorite music groups are Fall Out Boy, Twenty One Pilots, and Panic! At The Disco. Two single artists I find that I also really love are Halsey and Melanie Martinez.Â
Treatment Reflection
One aspect from the treatment that was read in class that I will possibly incorporate into my paper is interviewing accredited people that relate to my topic. I have already thought of two professors to ask for help on and possibly interview them. I also like the personal tone of the treatment.Â
