Talia ushered Jessi into the restaurant, hurrying to close the door behind her to keep the cold wind from following them inside anymore than necessary. Her daughter might really enjoy the snow and playing in it, but she herself could only take so long before running back inside to the warmth. Not above bribing when it came to getting out of the cold, sheâd decided to splurge on lunch.
âOkay, sweetheart, what do you think you want to eat?â she asked her daughter as she dug out a coloring book and crayons from the ever-present backpack.
âFrench fries!â Jessi announced.
âYes, that I knew,â she acknowledged dryly. Her daughter and the love of French fries. It might as well be legendary. âAnything else?â
âHmm . . . a milkshake.â
âIn this . . .â Letting her words fade, Talia just shook her head. âNever mind. How about chicken tenders, fries, and a milkshake.â
âOkay, Mama.â
As her daughter began to color her favorite princess, Talia sighed in relief at the lack of argument and began to look at the menu to try and figure out her own meal.
Just freshly off his break, Cassidy stepped inside to be alerted someone sat in his section. A sigh left his lips, his feet were tired and it had been one of those days where he just wanted to go home and plop down on the couch which also served as his bed. Â
Making his way over there, he recognized the little girl given Lily often played with her.
âHello, I am Cassidy. May I get you both started with someone to drink? We have Coke products, tea and milkshakes.â The scent of cigarettes lingering on his breath and clothes as he told the young girl and her mother.
âJessi right? I think you play with my daughter Lily,â he commented with a soft smile. Despite his insistence that he did not like most of mankind, children did often hold a soft spot in his heart.
