Kinda rules out the entire town. ” He lets a small smile show, thinking on the question. “ You a fan of nature, Cassie ? ” He asks, an air of an answer starting to form. “ The forests are nice to go to when you got a lot on your MIND. S’long as you keep outside the farm. Farm isn’t spooky per se, but y’know, town has their SHIT goin’ on, probably wanna keep the little one away. ”

" I grew up running around the desert that is Texas, so yes, ANY chance to get out and see a little green is one I’ll take happily. ” She nodded, remembering when her siblings and her would run around in the h o t s u n until they got tired. It seemed so long ago now. “ Katie would love an adventure. But yes, no farm, got it .”

He didn’t know all the details, but his own experiences forged relatively ASTUTE conclusions. After all, despite their respective towns baring the BRUNT of their insults, it was the people who deserved to be condemned. “ Ah, I dunno, probably cry a ton and never drink a milkshake again. ”

" Probably. ” She shrugged looking down at the milkshake in front of her, already almost gone. “ Do you know how many calories these things are ? ---NEVERMIND, not going to think about it. Not seventeen anymore. ” She grimaced, even though she knew she wasn’t exactly at the point where her metabolism was slowing down. Despite FEELING like she was fifty, she was only half that, but it was hard to remember that she was in the prime of her life sometimes.

Turned out to be a terrible mistake, of course. ” She shrugged, knowing she was close to POKING a hole in their b u b b l e where they were insulated from the past. “ I’ll make sure to steal EXTRA for you. What would I do without my number one babysitter? ”

She was quiet for a moment, eyes flickering over the other girl before she diverted her eyes and turned to serve the other patron at the bar. ❝ What’s her name? ❞ Politeness wasn’t something that Akiva FREQUENTLY delved into, but despite not wanting to have her own, children weren’t something she particularly hated. And she particularly hated everything.

Cassie’s heart melted a little at the thought of her daughter, and a gentle, l o v i n g look came into her eyes. She loved her daughter more than ANYTHING in the world by a long shot, and talking about her, as { sappy } as it was, just filled her heart even more. “ Her name’s Katie, she’s a ball of sunshine. ” She said softly, flipping open her wallet to show Akiva the picture inside.

Sheffield had initially been temporary, but as each day passed, temporary seemed more like an IMPOSSIBILITY. Not only physically, but something akin to revelations seemed to PROSPER in this town. Quaint and dark unlike the overexposed sunny town of Starke, he’d felt at home more quickly than he could ever imagine. The ominous nature suited him, for better or for worse. “ When things settle down, there really is a lot to explore. More than just the community events, although those are very nice. ”

She nodded in agreement, though pretty sure that life would never quite settledown.Being a nurse was hard [ enough ] but she was picking up more shifts to start Katie’s college fund, and move them into a better house, and maybe save up to buy a new car...it was like her life would NEVER hit the pause button. “ What do you suggest? Nowhere spooky, I’m a wimp. ”

" My momma did always say I had a big head. ” Cassie said rolling her eyes. Even though Aren didn’t know the whole story, he did know that her family was horrendous and that was enough. “ It’s a good thing I have access to free insulin then. Who knew being a nurse came with so many PERKS? ”

" Where’d you go? ” Cassie asked curiously, squinting at her through the SUNLIGHT. When she had left Dallas, she had thrown all of their possessions in the car and just drove, drove to a place she knew her parents would NEVER be able to find them. It could’ve been any small town in America but it had ended up being Sheffield. It was interesting to see how one person’s safe haven could be another’s prison.

“ I’d like to think I’m a moderate, but then again I was raised on guns and the Church, so you make your OWN call about that.” She chuckled, only half joking. Truth was, she didn’t give half a damn about politics but now that she had him talking she wasn’t going to let that bit of information out.

He’s slides into the booth opposite Cassie. already beaming at the thought of indulging in an afternoon of desserts. Along with a WICKED sweet tooth, he’d quickly discovered Jess’ was his comfort food, which he guiltily ate more often than not. “ Milkshakes and mud pie. Sounds like a lunch for KINGS ! ” He enthuses, eyes scanning the menu for milkshake flavours. “ Hmm, should I go for mint chocolate chip, or triple fudge brownie ? ” He’d never been the one to shy away from the most exuberant options, slightly childish, but endearing all the same.

“ How about...YOU get mint chip, I’LL get the triple fudge brownie and we’ll share ? Cause I sure as hell want to try both. No--not want. Need. ” She said deadpanned, staring at him from across the table before the serious m e l t e d and the smile came back. This was just PURE fun, it was like she was a kid again with no worries except what ice cream flavor she was going to get. A break from all the goddamn STRESS that came with adult life.

Whether it was the result of a HOLLOW sleep of the never quelling anxieties about his life, the older’s mood was in a constant flux. He’d made an oath to leave the world a little better than he’d found it, inspiring hope in others through the word of God, leaving little time to meditate on himself. His expression is a practiced one of wearied determination with a small, apologetic smile. He can’t help but feel like a BURDEN. “ Right. Sure. Thank you, Cassie. ” He wasn’t quite sure what he was thanking her for, maybe just her presence, even if it were mandatory. He offers his arm, peering UP at her. “ You haven’t lived here long, right ? Gotten to e x p l o r e all of Sheffield yet ? ”

Her hands worked through setting up the tests and getting out the NEEDLES while her mind pondered Levi’s question. “ I been here...about six months. ” She replied, feeling like it had only been six days. There was so much to this town that she still didn’t understand, but at the very least it was a place she knew Katie would be safe, relative to Dallas. “ I have ta’ admit, I’ve pretty much just been to my house, Katie’s school and the hospital. No time for EXPLORIN’ much these days. ”
