Outside of school and internship work, I spent a lot of my time with Reformed University Fellowship (RUF). It’s a college ministry of the Presbyterian Church in America, which allows students to (at least in NYC) hear about faith, talk about doubt, and engage the city. I coordinate service/volunteer opportunities and local events at my school for this ministry. Since I have graphic design background, I typically design flyers without thinking twice about it. Need something promoted? Design it, duh. Need something communicated? Better to design it! It didn’t cross my mind that I should share this work. Till now.

I have a new website! After talking about getting my own domain for years, I finally have a home on the interwebz. I’m actually surprised I still got it since I’d sat on it for too long. Yes, it’s under construction but still! I shall put work up soon.

At the end of my first semester at The New School, I was really stressed out and home sick. Although I really enjoyed NYC, adjusting to life and school there wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. In school, I was planning, analyzing, and writing a lot but I missed creating, a lot. So in the thick of my finals, I came up with this project to allow myself creative breaks, and to keep myself from exploding from anxiety and ungratefulness. It was a crazy idea but exactly what I needed!

I took a class this semester about zines (history and culture) focused on New York City. One of the assignments was to go to Brooklyn Zine Fest and write a report. I decided to do mine more creatively just for fun. The festival was giving out brown paper bags for people to collect stuff in and I saw an opportunity to use that as a base. The string was from a purchase I made. 

I wrote and drew all this in a night, which was unusual for this over-planning over-thinking creative. But it was freeing to work on something quick and accepting the mistakes along the way. It was a 2 credit class anyway!

So thankful for the crazy amazing opportunity to work with Septième Largeur and Esquire in Singapore while I was back for winter break! When I first saw Jubilee Project's videos, I knew I wanted to be part of it somehow because someone showed me how my work could be more than just about making good art. They showed me how my art could be used to spur others into positive thought and action. So I jumped at the chance to be part of their JP Design Community, where I could put my graphic design skills to good use.

This is the first work I've done with them that's been put into the public sphere, so I'm sharing it here. I honestly didn't do much design work because the artwork for the video was already done. I just needed to adapt it for this behind the scenes commentary. Watch the commentary here and the video in full here. Remember, doing good is contagious!

I got the idea for this video almost as soon as the assignment was given. My classmates for this course are mostly people who have lived in NYC for at least a year and most of them groaned when they realized we had to shoot a 3 minute-long silent video of Times Square. Generally residents of a place don't like the touristy spots of that place. It's most likely chaotic, bustling and crowded. Times Square is no exception.

While I don't love Times Square, I don't hate it. In part, I think it's because going to Times Square is a way to escape the normalcy of living here. Sometimes it's nice to jostle with the crowds and soak up the atmosphere. I think a large part of it though, is that I've lived in urban spaces all my life and I still do. Navigating through it–enjoying the hustle and finding moments of solitude–is second nature to me.

Busy, busy, busy.

Since my last post, I've moved to New York, started school and made it for ¾ of my first semester. I've been caught up with adjusting to a new culture, new environment, new emotions, and all things news that comes with moving away so far away for college!

I've some post lined up with work I've been doing. Will do my best to keep posting regularly.

I'm officially New School!

I have been accepted at Parsons The New School for Design AND Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts to pursue a double degree in you guessed it, liberal arts and design. Woohoo, praise God for this amazing offer and for my parents' deliberate saving! I'll be moving to New York City come August for the next 5 years.

In other news, I've been interning for about 6 weeks now. I went from design at Hjgher to editorial at UNDERSCORE magazine, which is essentially in the same studio but different job scope. (Read: Hjgher produces UNDERSCORE magazine)

I'm also working on two freelance projects. Thinking of refusing more projects after that for some personal projects. Too many ideas, too little time! I'll share both when they are ready.

While studying in polytechnic, I was part of Campus Crusade for Christ (now known as Cru) so they came to me when they needed a brochure for their recent polytechnic recruitment drive. I was largely inspired by the new Cru look with its vibrant colour blocks and modern-looking san-serifs! Really loving the visual direction it's heading as a whole.
