2013 - The Year I Chased My Dream
As I sit here lying in bed, unable to fall asleep, I realized something so simple yet so refreshing for my soul:
I had a good year. I had a really good year.
It's refreshing for my soul because recently I've been focused on so many of the negatives - uncertainty about the direction of my channel, critical of my talent as an artist, frustrated at the slow growth of my channel... But all in all? Take a step back and look at it? It has been an incredibly blessed year and I am thankful for all the people who have helped me along the way.
You see, one year ago, I was working for a little company called P&G making a steady engineer's salary. I had never opened a video editing program before and never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be pursuing a career in YouTube.
And now, as I sit here reflecting... Well. I'm just going to list out some of the things that have happened this year:
On January 24, I released my first ever YouTube video, encouraged by my friends Kevin and Dae Yoon
On February 13, I was selected as a top-100 contestant for a reality show called Internet Icon
On March 14, I released my first ever short film about an issue close to my heart, directed by my close friend Stephen Lo
On March 19, I flew out to LA to compete in Internet Icon
On April 19, I was accepted into the Jubilee Project Fellowship
On April 30, my short film was featured on 8asians.com
On May 28, a video I submitted for Ellen's Mirror Moves Challenge was aired on her show
On June 14, I officially began a 3-month leave of absence from P&G to gain clarity on my interest in YouTube
On June 16, I participated in the Jubilee Project Fellowship, by far the highlight of 2013 (i love you, my fellow JP Fellows!)
On July 26, I cameo-ed in a video with my friends over at a pretty popular YT channel called Off the Great Wall
On August 11, I moved to Columbus (with my beautiful roommate Ryan!)
On August 16, I started working part-time at a restaurant to help pay the bills
On August 20, I directed my first ever music video for a cover my lovely sister Tiffany produced
On August 21, I was asked to emcee OSU's Asian American Mix and Mingle event which kicks off the year for the Asian American community
On August 28, I released my video about Asian Time with truly a star-studded cast: John, Mady, Justin, Ying, Calvin, Songyi, Kevin, Jimmy, Sarah, David, and Spurthi.. directed by my boy Huang Di
On September 5, our JP film Road Back Home was released on the Jubilee Project YT Channel
On September 25, I officially quit my job at P&G to pursue YouTube full time
On October 2, I released a Chinese version of "What the Fox Say," which has garnered over 35,000 hits
On that same day, I did my first hired photo shoot
On November 17, I released my 2nd short film about another issue close to my heart, directed by good friend David Wai
On November 21, I participated as a guest judge for OSU's KPL Iron Chef competition
On December 9, I hit my one-year goal of 2000 subscribers
On December 12, I collaborated with InterVarsity to create a promo video for their upcoming Asian American conference, Arise
I am so blessed. I am so blessed because I have the most amazing support system... Mom, Dad, Alvin, Tiffany, I love you guys and thank you for believing in me and sticking with me. Vincent, Calvin, and Jason, you are the three people who have been most supportive, most helpful, helping me get through my lowest times and always being there for me. Thank you so much.
I have no regrets for the decisions I made in 2013 to pursue YouTube. Some people, I think, are lucky enough to have a job that they love pay them well. Others though, are lucky enough to have a job that they love enough to not care how much it pays. I'm definitely in the latter camp. Every day I wake up and I feel 10 times more alive than I did at P&G. Not to say I didn't enjoy my time working in the corporate life.. but there's just something that is so energizing, so life-giving, so exciting about making videos and creating art. I do not know what tomorrow brings, but I live each day to the fullest and hope for the best.
Join me in 2014, would you?
P.S. There are so many people I just did not have a chance to shoutout in this blog... I promise I haven't forgotten about you. Thank you for all your support!
