I'm at season 2 now and it is so incredibly insensitive that they gave the ONLY Black presenting character a "racism" arc without ever properly acknowledging and integrating into her character that Allura is an actual genocide survivor.

Not to mention the arc itself is so poorly done and without any nuance. Like why does she just straight up hate Keith now when like three episodes ago they ran away together because they were so afraid Zarkon was tracking them through them? Why have that episode at all if it wasn't going to be a factor in how Allura would feel when she learned about Keith's heritage?

Where are the complicated feelings and cognitive dissonance because she has every single right in the universe to hate the Galra. But Keith is her friend and has been fighting beside her since he learned the fight existed? Why are the writers acting like she isn't capable of understanding or reckoning with that?

And on top of ALL of that bullcrap. They decide to frame her as a petty bully? Like a high school mean girl? It pisses me off so bad because the writers CHOSE these incredibly serious themes of which there INNUMERABLE real world equivalents. Real people are genocide survivors. Black people, whom Allura presents as, are genocide survivors, and then they wrote a story where they ignore her very real pain except to frame it as petty and give her an arc where they cast her as a bully to everyone's favorite white boy main character and make the audience hate her.

Like, the absolute GYMNASTICS those writers had to do to create an arc where you pit the audience against a genocide survivor for rightfully hating the people who killed her entire planet. And they did all this to a character who presents as Black.

I will be forever angry at them for that. Because what the actual hell.

Backstory

Duke's backstory is contained within Batman (2011), in the arcs Zero Year (where Duke and Bruce first meet) and Endgame (where Duke's parents get Jokerized). Read Batman (2011) #21 - 40 for the full story. For just the Duke bits, read: #21, 30, 33, 35, 37, 38, 39.

Starter Comic

If the reading lists look a little daunting, a good place to start would be the 12-issue comic series We Are Robin. The first six issues are relatively self-contained and a great introduction to Duke and his friends!
