The Franklin Expedition is named for its leader— Rear-Admiral Sir John Franklin. Before this expedition, he was rather infamous as “the man who ate his own boots,” referring to a disasterous arctic journey taken earlier in his life. One would think he’d have taken that as a warning, but Franklin wanted a glorious end to his long career...
