So! The 200th episode was beautiful! I have these fangirl goggles and everything I look at becomes Destiel, so I'm here for your wisdom! Where does that put us, in regards to the ship? You think it was positive for it? You think it left the breadcrumbs you talked about?? I'm so pumped wow
Did it leave the breadcrumbs I talked about it?
I know Iāve been out of town and other people have probably mentioned all this already, so letās talk about expectations and the casual viewer.
Letās talk about how in the last āfan-inclusiveā meta episode, āthe homoerotic subtext of Supernaturalā was played for laughs. And how it most definitely wasnāt this time around. Theyāve learned, theyāve grown, and Robbie Thompson has his finger square on the pulse of fandom.
I expected that let-bygones-be-bygones toleration of fandom thatās been their main talking point for years. You girls are sorely misguided but we love you anyway, basically.
I didnāt expect the celebration of us. I didnāt expect them to glorify us. But they did and it was marvelous and I loved every pandering second of it.
My sum total of ship-addressing that I expected was one Wincest shoutout with a grossed-out reaction, one Destiel shoutout with a grossed-out reaction, and basically what Dean said about, āI donāt agree with it but you can tell your story too.ā
I even said, āIf you donāt think Dean will scoff and deny it, you need to read up on your tropes. The will-they-or-wonāt-they couples always scoff and deny it.ā I was trying to manage my own expectations there, but it was ultimately unnecessary. God bless Robbie Thompson.
Because play!Sam and play!Dean were standing too close together and Dean got all shirty about it, and I strapped myself in like, āHere we go.ā In my head I was already doing damage control. When he and Marie walked on stage and you could see Kristen and Siobhan in the background, in costume, flirting, my jaw literally dropped.
And Deanās reaction was not a, āYou know Cas and Dean are just friends,ā to match his earlier, āYou know theyāre brothers.ā We expected that. I expected that. There was an eyebrow-raising, Dean-making-a-wtf-face, distinct pause and I strapped my shipper helmet under my chin and braced for incoming cannon fire.
And Dean said, āIs that gonna be in the show?ā and I fell out of my chair. No denial, no hate, no disgust, just slightly panicky (as heād been all episode) and wondering if everyone was going to see that.
And Marie said that they were dating in real life and a choked sob escaped my throat. Because out of all the fantastical bits of fan-created plot that were purely ONSTAGE FAN CREATIONS, this was the thing that was legitimized as true offstage.Ā
I could paint word pictures about Jensenās facial expressions during that scene, but other people have already done that so letās move on.Ā
I was done. I already had fifteen metas rolling around in my head from what I assumed would be our one Destiel shoutout, and I was incredibly pleased with how it went. I was so happy to be wrong about Dean denying it was a thing that I almost missed what happened next.
Which is when Dean must have run to Sam and been like, āDude these people think Cas and I are together. They call us Destiel.ā
Because the on-screen conversation picks up with, āShouldnāt it be pronounced Dea-stiel?ā
Dean, who clearly needed a macho-affirming belly-laugh from Sam about how ridiculous the idea was, was upset. āThatās your problem with it?ā
I donāt think people have talked enough about Jared Padaleckiās sassy little, āOf course thatās not my problem with it.ā
Because my expectation was the belly laugh, the, āDude, that sucks, Iām never letting you live this down, they think youāre gay for Cas. Am I gonna be your best man when you guys get gay-married?ā
But what we got was, āWait, how come they donāt ship ME with Cas? This is unfair. Youāre hogging all the eyesex.ā
Dean was just as surprised as I was, and did his usual, āSam stop noticing shit, shut up, get in the carā splutter and posturing. Meanwhile Iām keening like a wounded animal in my sisterās recliner.
Thatās two Destiel shoutouts and a Sastiel one for free, and still no denial.
Then we got Deanās, āI donāt see it that way, but the fact that you do is equally valid,ā speech, and I thought we were done for the day with just the Destiel bonus round.
Then Dean looked directly into play!Casā eyes and told her to sub the hell out of that text, after turning her tie around backward to match real Casā tie. I mean, seriously. SERIOUSLY. That was the opposite of a denial, that was the opposite of no-homo, that was a touching fucking moment right there. He remembered a thing that made Cas uniquely Cas, and earnestly told the Cas substitute to do what she would.
Whenās he gonna say that to the real Cas?
And then Kristen and Siobhan go onstage and, without changing any canon lines between Dean and Cas, created the intro to a beautiful love ballad that I have been listening to on repeat ever since. It served no purpose within the play and there was no reaction shown to it from either Sam or Dean, and Iāve already said itās more of a meta-commentary on Cas in season ten than anything, but it was there. And it was beautiful.
And Dean was running around chasing monsters, not listening, because thatās how he does it in real life too.
So then Dean said, āItās been educational,ā and I was like, āYOUāRE DAMN RIGHT IT HAS, DEAN WINCHESTER.ā
So. Aside from all the glory of what actually happened, letās talk about the casual viewer and breadcrumbs.
There were myriad opportunities for Dean to make the expected denial of his feelings for Cas. I personally think we got so many Destiel asides, not to nudge-nudge-wink-wink us into hoping for canon, but because that moment when he could deny it and doesnāt needed to be hammered home half a dozen separate times.Ā
One non-denial is, āIt didnāt flow in the script.ā Two is, āHe was busy fighting a monster.ā Any more than that, and itās clear that Dean is not planning, ever, to offer that denial.
I am so Destiel-positive it hurts, I walk on Profound Bond clouds everywhere I go, and I expected the denial and was confused when it didnāt happen.
Imagine the casual viewer getting ready for one of Deanās no-homo jokes, and that joke just⦠never comes. And it never comes several separate times. And youāre expecting it, you know how the Winchesters operate, you know how macho Dean is, you expect him to be completely disgusted and maybe set fire to the stage in protest.
And he repeatedly does not do that. You expect it every time thereās an opportunity, and it never happens, and youāre sitting there like, āWhatās up with Dean?ā
And Dean tells play!Cas to frigginā go for it, and you say, āWait⦠just wait a darn second right there, did Dean just say it was okay if people think he and Cas are together?ā
A few beats, the canon scene you thought was so funny in season five, and then a stirring ballad from play!Cas about waiting and wishing and doing the right thing, and suddenly youāre like, āOh my god that really can be read as romantic.ā
Yes, the breadcrumbs I expected were delivered upon beyond my wildest expectations.
And now, friends, we do our best Castiel imitation and wait here.
10x07 is the next Cas episode, and we will see what they do with it. Dean and Cas probably wonāt interact (can anyone confirm that? Iāve been out of the loop the last few days), but Hannah and Cas tend to talk about Dean a lot.
How many breadcrumbs will they drop that play!Castielās waiting and hoping isnāt that much different than actual Castielās waiting and hoping? My guess would be at least one that the casual viewer would pick up on, and at least three or four for those of us who like to analyze.
Bonus points for a phone call in which the words, āI miss you,ā or, āYou need to rest,ā are spoken.
The breadcrumbs are becoming bread slices, people. Just sit back and watch it snowball.Ā
