I went through a Google rabbit hole and found this amazing collage of Karamatsu’s bottom half. Does anyone know where images #9 and #13 are from?

I tried to reverse Google image search and no luck. This entire photo is a Facebook fan page’s cover photo, and the page hasn’t been updated since 2018.

Another thing that keeps playing in my mind, as I lay awake at nearly 4am, is how this episode highlight’s Chibita’s greatest character flaw as well as the thing that endeared me to him in the first place.

Chibita’s kindness is non transactional. He doesn’t expect anything in return. He’s never had anything in return. Heck, I don’t know if his brain registers that he can even recieve anything in return. Sure, he asks the Matsuno’s to pay him and demands it, but I think at this point he knows him asking is only performative and it’s never gonna happen. I can’t recall him ever asking Iyami to pay him, similarly to the cats. Keeping them fed and happy is enough for him (and, let’s be real, Iyami is never paying either. The only difference is Chibita thinks the world of him). Sadly, this makes it very easy to be taken advantage of, something that has afflicted him since he was young.

The Matsuno’s kindness, on the other hand, always seems to be laced with a desire to get something back. While they are kind to Nekomaru, they do so in order to recieve affection back. They want to keep Nekomaru as a pet and can’t seem to understand the wider picture of why he would want to stay out in the wild (except Ichimatsu who does by the end of the episode). They’ve never had this expectation to be kind for the sake of it, therefore it doesn’t process for them.

If anything, Nekomaru is a parallel of Chibita, in that his desire to help the other strays is non transactional too. They are one of the same, a fact I think Chibita is chillingly aware of. In the world of the abandoned you only really have yourself, even if there are people around you that you love.

However, Chibita isn’t a cute cat who can be kept as a trophy pet, so he is left with nothing. If he wasn’t a human who had assimilated into a “socially acceptable” life, the exterminators would want him gone too.
