I’m back on the Tumbles, kids.
Madilyn Mei was soooo good!
Isn’t she the cutest?
Weirdest Halloween decoration I’ve seen in the wild.
Rewatching The Vampire Diaries because I can. Ian Somerhalder is so…what do the kids say these days? Fire? Fine shit? I would be Damon Salvatore’s blood buddy any day. He wouldn’t even have to glamour me. Lort.
Look for the moment when I realize that the Memoji mimics my facial movements. It doesn’t take much to entertain this old broad.
George is looking…
If they think Tylenol is bad for kids, wait till they learn about guns.
Blood of my Blood Spoiler Alert:
Anyone else have a feeling that Henry and Julia are NOT going to find each other again this season? WHY did she insist on splitting up again? And when is Brian going to make his actual move? Time is running out.
This show pisses me off.
A dog just ran up to me, wagging his tail. His owner came over and was like, you must be a really nice person because he’s really shy.
I said, he knows I like animals more than most people. She says, Amen.
This is how introverts find each other.
Fine, I watch the show. Think what you will, but this is AMAZING advertising by DoorDash.
Sometimes when I take Ambien, I play Animal Crossing until I fall asleep and come back on the next day not remembering why I started a build on the island nor what my inspiration was.
Just took an Ambien after 3 nights of no sleep. I probably should lock myself in my room. Too bad Ambien-induced housecleaning isn’t a thing.
After feeling unwell the past few days, I finally had an appetite today. Is it a coincidence that I also started thinking about the Kentucky meat shower of 1867 and if anyone actually ate any of the meat? I mean, maybe a little tasty taste?
“Wuthering Heights is racist. Heathcliff is a stereotype and a villain. Why would you feel sad that he is being whitewashed?”
This is a common sentiment on the “wuthering heights” tag nowadays so I am posting my opposition to it as a separate post too.
1- The families Heathcliff ruins were already pretty bad before he ruined them. This is an “abused becomes abuser” story rather than an “a demon ruins white families” story. The white people in the story are not really better than Heathcliff.
2- Wuthering Heights is primarily remembered as a love story by the general public and it is certainly the angle this new adaptation is going for. Interestingly, the 19th century critics who tended to focus on the revenge plot more were more ready to accept Heathcliff’s racial otherness. Heathcliff started to be whitewashed when Wuthering Heights started to be read as a love story and he became a literary sex icon.
Whitewashing Heathcliff (both in adaptations and in literary criticism) has never been and will never be about people being concerned with him being “too evil”, it had always been about people feeling squeamish about a dark-skinned Other being thoroughly romantically/sexually preferred by the white women in the story. And it is the case with this new adaptation too. Hence his originally blond romantic rival being played by a Pakistani actor in this new adaptation.
3- Heathcliff is a cool, calculating, smart villain. He is violent too but not any more than his white foster brother Hindley. Fictional villains, especially those in heightened and slightly unrealistic stories like Wuthering Heights, can be charismatic and cool and memorable. And there is nothing inherently racist about a villain not being white.
4- Catherine is also a terrible person. This story is not one about a demon lover corrupting an innocent girl. The whole point of the story is that Heathcliff and Catherine are similar people.
People who defend the whitewashing of Heathcliff with the argument that a narrative with a poc villain is inherently racist seem unaware of the real material harm that such a stance entails. Actors of color have been historically alienated from the cinematic industry, it's very rare for them to have an opportunity to play a character that is both interesting and in the spotlight of a story. If you try to list the 20 most iconic characters in films and television in the US/UK, you'll find that a very small percentage of those were played by actors of color. Even the recent "attempt" of big studios to be more inclusive by casting people of color to play classic fairy tale characters falls short because these new versions are still forced to exist under the shadow of a classic, white-led story. By arguing that Heathcliff, a man of color, be played by a white man, you are reinforcing a system that has effectively kept people of color out of relevant roles, a system that only allows people of color to exist if they are subservient lambs in a white-centered narrative. Characters like Don Draper, Walter White and Patrick Bateman get to be universally adored as villainous/morally grey men, but Heathcliff can only exist in all his layers (good and bad) if he is white man, because of course people of color owe the world moral purity, people of color are only allowed to exist if they are well-behaved enough. You people are arguing to take job opportunities away from people of color and give them to privileged white men. And you claim to be doing that in the name of "anti racism" of course.
People thinking that we hate on this movie because we hate eroticism and kinky stuff… I am literally a Nibrahim shipper.
I personally hate on this film because it is racist. It is RACIST AF to cast a white man as Heathcliff and a brown man as Edgar Linton.
If Shazad Latif played Heathcliff and a white guy played Edgar Linton, I would go and see this movie, the horrible costumes and the blonde Catherine and the kink and all. I probably wouldn’t like it, but I would go and see it.
But the racism inherent to its casting renders any weird commentary this film might be trying to make about period dramas and eroticism and literary canon and what-not extremely meaningless. It is not edgy to cast a white guy as Heathcliff, it is extremely banal.
