India's poultry sector is deliberately turning its attention away from overseas markets to concentrate on the burgeoning domestic consumer base, a move driven by sharp increases in production costs and the massive, unfulfilled demand for protein across the nation.

He quantified consumption at roughly of chicken and about eggs per person each year. Given that 71% of India's population already consumes poultry products, Pasuparthy questioned the logic of prioritizing exports when the domestic demand is "colossal."

Barriers: Cost and Infrastructure

The industry's ability to compete internationally is severely hampered by high feed and raw material expenses. For example, local corn prices () are almost double the cost faced by major exporting nations. Soybean meal is also approximately 30% more expensive domestically.

Beyond pricing, infrastructure poses a significant obstacle. Sridhar highlighted that a lack of modern processing units, advanced freezing technology, and stringent hygiene standards prevents the sector from being globally competitive.

To help mitigate these issues, agricultural economist Ashok Gulati proposed creating Export Processing Zones (EPZs) that would permit duty-free imports, thereby making export operations more financially feasible.
