Brutally honest thoughts on Marchenghast
First things first: The vibes are IMMACULATE ofc. The architecture, the lighting, the landscape, the the npc design (one of my major complains about sso these past months was that the npcs are no longer distinguishable due to having MC features and Iâm so glad that they seem to be changing that), the horses, the pet, the little details. They managed to give off perfect Hogwarts, LOTR, Nosferatu vibes all at once, Iâm truly amazed at how they captured the spirit of a grim fairytail PERFECTLY. It satisfies all my gothic, historical fantasy longings and for that we should applaude the team, because they did their WORK.
And the new creatures? Oh my, give those who created them a raise because they are stunning and feel so alive.
The new horses are a cash grab, yes. But I never understood why people complain about horses, just donât buy them? They are beautiful, though I have one minor complain: The âhorsesâ in the castle are dragons and dragons only. And NO ONE raises an eyebrow as to why these people only ride dragons. In general, so far this area doesnât have ANYTHING to do with horses and I hope they pick up on that. The vibes make up for it though.
There are new interesting characters, I love Abigail and Magdalena(?) so far and Iâm eager to learn more about them. The rest of the fractions seem pretty hollow so far, I hope they get a little more flavor soon. Talking about fractions: It does feel a little repetitive to the Medieval Camp, just more serious this time, which is fine. The story seems interesting and to those who were complaining about not getting all the content at once: That would be so dumb tbh. SSE would have rushed it, it would have been half cooked, and you would be the first ones to complain that the quests were too short and now thereâs ânothing to doâ again so PLEASE just take your time to take in the new area and enjoy the content we got (which was way more than I expected tbh) and let the team COOK to make the rest of they questline good and thought through.
It truly does feel like entering a completly different game and time, when you leave the area it feels like youâre suddenly back in Jorvik, as if you had been completly detached from it for a while. This could be a great thing ( âTime and space unfoldsâŠâ) or a terrible thing, depending on writing and the further progression of the story. Which brings me to my only major concern with this area: All vibes and no substance for the main lore. Again, itâs way too early to determine this and it could go the complete opposite direction with a huge lore drop for the core lore (pandoria, fripp, magic). And I genuinly hope it does. But knowing the writing team, Iâm concerned. SSO has a habit of inventing completely new things (which can be great) instead of tying loose ends and working with all the interesting stuff they already have started. I really hope this doesnât end up like Wildwoods (which I am forever mourning)- IF they manage to tie it to the main lore and add more substance though, this could be one of the greatest updates so far!
anyone else remember the chaos vortex
star stable players on tiktok will say "THEY TOOK OUR OLD CHARACTER MODELS AWAY FROM US WE USED TO BE DIVASđ" and this is the old character model
Which of these do you think Star Stable does the WORST at?

I am curious (I have also made a âwhich of these do you think star stable does the BEST atâ poll)
Was this saddle designed by AI?

Another take- the 'Championship Pro' shops aren't actually hugely motivational for levelling up your championship reputation.
There are no differences in stats in the tack or the clothing between the basic and elite sets. Appearance-wise, they're also very similar, maybe with additional patterns or a few colours swapped around. The only real reason you'd work to unlock them is for the aesthetic, and even then, the two sets are already similar in aesthetic. They need to make the unlockable sets higher stats to make them more worthwhile.
On that note, actually, they need to bring back greater diversity in stats and prices for ALL tack and clothing. We're secure in the knowledge that we can buy pretty much anything we want and it'll be max stats. I miss when you actually had to work for high stat equipment. It was great motivation.
SSO fanbase has an INSANE nostalgia problem because what do you MEAN you miss the stairs in Fort Pinta I do not believe you you are just lying
How much Light do these bad boys hold
when people are calling gen 2 horses crusty but this horse with a human face is who raised you
Okay question how do you sort your wardrobe in SSO
Bottoms, tops, etc all separate. Colour coded.
Bottoms, tops, etc all separate. Quests rewards and store bought seperate.
All clothes together. Colour coded.
All clothes together. Quests rewards and store bought seperate.
All clothes together. Sets/themes together.
Other (say in tags!)
Everything is seperate (except dresses, which I group in with tops). Tops, saddlepads, mane/tail decorations, and legwraps are colour-coded, the rest are divided by model. (All beanies together, all long pants together, all sneakers together, all showjumping saddles together, etc.)
If I have space on the page left I will also seperate full-stats items from non-full-stat items of that same model by a row in between. (For tops and saddlepads, I have done this on seperate tabs, but for the rest the row in between is my usual method) (Oh also, I order them vertically, not horizontally. So it's not one horizontal row of red, a horizontal row of orange, etc - categories start at the top row and go down)
I have to go catch a train rn but maybe I'll add some screenshots of my closet tonight
Ok I have literally never in the history of sso been so excited for a new area and I will literally implode if I need to wait more than a few months for this

having a cap on jorvik shillings is sctually fucking diabolical
yeah but if they raise or take away the cap then they can just price things insanely
this is gonna make me sound like i am insanely pro-capitalism i am not but i have an idea to fix SSE's money system both in game and out irl money and i dont know if anyone wants to hear it.
speak your truth
@paigeswiftsea so you can hear this to the obvious issue is that at the end of the day nothing has value and there is no real incentive beyond peer pressure and instant dopamine.
so we create value. in the old days you used to have to really work for levels and to get access to higher end equipment now most days if you're above lvl 9 you can just buy good equipment. to counteract this we do two things: 1) we create actual decent looking mid tier items. this will create more reward and incentive to remain at a level and not push forward more
2) we create items with increased stats. everything nowadays has the same stats so we create premium items that are more expensive. items don't have a price that reflects what it's worth. you buy starter gear and an hour later youre in better, maxed out gear due to the global shop next thing we do: we introduce a gacha system using shillings this way it is less predatory, cannot be used with irl currency and encoueages players to stay online more. theyre gonna do more tasks, theyre gonna train their horse more and then they have to go buy a new horse. this will also help keep retention too and give a reason for people to train their horses beyond boredom. the gacha system will then only be avaialble during events and it will be open aka you know what youre gonna get. these gacha systems will create premium loot.
speaking of events and loot: we make once-a-year items. idk why they make "halloween" variations available during the rest of the year thats stupid. we lock them to their event time only that way people will have to buy starcoins if they dont want to wait another year.
we also introduce premium tack-outfits THAT ARE THERE ONLY FOR THAT YEAR. they used to do this with anniversary items so we do that. these items can only be done with star coins but its fine because in otehr events, there will be items with the same stats availble that way you're not missing out on an advantage. we will also announce these premium sets ahead of time because the worst thing you can do is not announce new items then drop them and then expect people to pay. these premium items will be like increases stats, mood boosters, the most spectacular shit you ever done seen the next thing will be to add monetisation of the clubs. club rooms suck. nobody goes there nothing happens its awful so we revamp the club room and arena and be like "you can change decorations for starcoins!" you can buy loadouts, vibes, aesthetics etc. this will be done trhough a club bank account. so what happens is a club meeting is called, you all vote and what is voted for is locked in. you can only buy what was voted for. club members will donate their own starcoins to the club bank account and when x amount is reached, the staricoins are traded for club item and automatically installed. this will stop any corruption or club owner taking money away. you can only donate once every 2 weeks. there will also be time limited items that will encourage people to buy starcoins for that item. we also increase price on magic horses and decrease price on normal horses. idfk why they didnt do this already. its fucking up with the low, mid, high ranking they could enforce which promotes transactions in other games. we increase the shilling bank acc to like 50,000 or 100,000 as a way to counteract the absolute money grabbing ploys we are doing. you can turn shillings into star coins but because of the shilling gacha system its not worth it. there should be a championship fee too. 1 or 2 starcoins (which is like normal for irl events where you have to pay to attend). low amount but it adds up during the rosette events. which btw are useless and i dont understand you dont get anything out of it. so here's what we do: we create a prize. all up to get 250 points, if you're good, is 100 starcoins. that can be more if you are awful at champs. so we create like, a tack set or a horse or a horse cosmetic, soemthing really good, that you are happy to pay on top of the 100 sc. the 100 sc is like,..discounted off. you get all the rosettes, you get the item. i'd also lowkey nuke global store. i think it is great its good to look at but it doesnt encourage exploration. premium items are in stroes you have to search for.
speaking of exploration: location related horses. they did this with the fjords when dino came out and i think we bring that back again. each area in the map requires a different type of horse for maximum boosts otherwise youre stuck at a canter or have a negative mood boost. this will also apply to the player (if you're not wearing x item you will experience something like freezing in dino). what the zones and effects would be idk but it would encourage people to diversify and spend more to not be fucked over by the game server switching will also require a star coin spenditure and we also even out the fucking players like wdym you hvae one server at capacity and one with noone one that stupid. anyway force people to pay to swap.
reintroduce day blockers. back in my day you used to spend 150 sc to stay the ngiht and skip all day blocks. finally: account reset. the most amount of starcoins ever. you bored with just doing nothing? heard they updated the game but you've already finished everything? congratulations!! spend 10k sc and we will reset your levels! some of your horses will have a level block on them as will your tack. you still have everything from when you were a lvl25 but now you gotta wait to use it. your reset will also go slower, so less xp. you wanna know how you can level up quicker? buy xp bottles!! also you get a fine if you buy like over 50 horses just ebcause i dont understand why the fuck you collected that many. if it's an old ass acc fait enough but i know some 2024 players that have 100 horses like damn heres council tack for all the pasture you want. Oh! and sad horse tax. obviosuly this isnt applied to people who haven't logged in a while but if you're grooming like one horse and thats it? you are fined like 100 sc (pssst this is just stable care) and you are locked with one horse until all horses are back to the highest mood level. this will encourage players to buy stable care. oh and its not like a "you log off for 7 days and come back" no its timing is based off the once per irl day log in meaning you have to log in for a minimim of 30 minutes per day for a week. you can pay for a vet to come out and fix your horses tho. OH AND WE DO LIKE, ACTUAL BETTER SHILLING FARMING AND ALSO WE ADD IN A DARK RIDER PATHWAY THAT WILL REQUIRE STAR COINS TO SWITCH OVER. IT IS AN EXPENSIVE ROUTE THAT REQUIRES SPELLING CORRUPTED HORSES. IF YOU WANT A CORRUPTED HORSE YOU HAVE TO SPEND STARCOINS TO CORRUPT THEM i think thats everything. essentially we make the game annoying but also more interactive
"why do all Warmbloods in sso look the same"
because it's the same basic type of horse
SSO would have been way more successful and would have had way less trouble if the game was targeted to teenagers and not little kids and actually tried doing something with the old storyline (when it was more creepy and mysterious than just magical and whimical)
That was the wind y'all, a round of applause for the wind
Okay, and can we acknowledge that a lot of kids WANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY?? Like I think it was Roald Dahl who said the best kids stories are ones not written for children. Cos you feel like you're in on something. You're more immersed.
9 y/o me LOVED dark stuff. I used to write stories where truly terrible stuff happened to the main characters and the villains were legitimate bastards (eh, I still do) purely because I was sick and tired of all the media I had access to being... soft and cuddly.
Give. Us. Darkness.
You have an eldritch god as your main villain, and his immortal CANONICAL MURDERER puppet running the evil team. Can we have madness? Insanity? More instances where the fabric of our world tears and we see what might happen should we fail?? Villains who actually begin to physically get corrupted through exposure to their dark patron???
This.
There is a fine line between âtoo much exposureâ for children and just bubble-wrapping everything so theyâre never exposed to plot lines that challenge their understanding of the world and engage their minds.
When I was younger, I too loved engaging storylines, and could not only recognize but hated when media targeted towards my age group made me feel like a complete idiot.
Of course there are many pieces of media out there that serve a younger audience well and have a healthy balance of exposure levels, but one that I absolutely loved and opened doors for me as a child to write and challenge my ideas of story telling in general was MLP:FIM. Perfect example of not dumbing everything down and having those darker elements, and keeping it interesting enough to challenge kids and keep older audiences entertained.
My goal here is not to make a big stand about sso being targeted towards kids. It just is, and itâs because thatâs their biggest market. Without having that younger audience, the game wouldnât exist. However, itâs losing that charm of having those darker elements. Kids donât just want to see bright colors and âwe saved the day by doing literally nothing because there was no real conflictâ plot lines.
They need stories that challenge their understanding of the world and make them asks questions about characters without everything being so cut-and-dry. Thatâs what younger me loved.
Iâm hoping that the recent story quests that did delve back into those darker elements are a sign that theyâre not abandoning the story and the amazing characters all together in favor of completely turning the game into a soulless cash cow.
Nobody ever told the Butler the track is done?!
