you need to understand I'm a former Horse Girl when i say this. i think the 40k death riders of kreig are stupid.
Historical-like cavalry in a futuristic setting with automatic weapons and tanks is stupid anyway, for the same reasons cavalry mostly went away in our real world. There are extremely niche modern military uses for horses but they don't make sense for most of the confrontations that happen in 40k.
the death riders to me seem like really wanting the 'role' of cavalry for style (that is pretty much nonexistent post-WW1) while absolutely hating horses. Their relative fragility, how they look, how after their military use is over they're often associated with women, stuff like that. The mount critters REEK of a fear of 'pretty pretty pony' and have removed all features that invoke 'pretty pretty pony' under the guise of cutting logistical inconveniences.
Except the resulting creature is worthless. I am sorry to tell you that a horse's coat of hair was pretty much the only thing making them semi-resistant to irritating gas weapons. The hooves are able to be shod and thus become resistant to being worn down by sharp terrain; giving them Claws won't help. And it fucks up their stride such that now they wouldn't be able to do what you want horses to do.
The lore about them being able to be freeze-dried is dumb too, because the only advantage of horses is that they're able to go fast without gasoline. Eliminating the logistical drawbacks of taking care of the horses (via axing all those Pretty Pretty Pony Features) also eliminates the entire tradeoff that explains why you might choose horses in the first place.
A lot of things in Warhammer 40k feel like they were made-up by a gushing dweeb who does not know what he's talking about but this is one of the worst. A wargame is about war which is primarily about logistics, and if you want horses you need the logistics for horses. It does not make your Kreig faction look more hardcore and stylish, it makes them look insecure and like they need special excuses to function. Just put that gas mask on a normal horse. They'll do no worse at catching machine gun fire, I promise.
If you think Krieg horses are stupid, I am so sorry to have to be the one to tell you that the highest ranking canon Imperial Guard character we have right now is Lord Solar Leontus and he - you guessed it - rides a horse.

I enjoy the setting of 40k it simultaneously satirizes the all-encompassing hegemonic mindset of White Christian colonizers while speculating a reality where empire, hierarchy, work-culture, and absolute power are even remotely sensible, thereby highlighting the absurdity of the constant senseless violence of colonizer and settler States irl. But do 40k fans get that? Nope. They equate the Imperium of Man with their irl empire because they both say empire. Regardless of how, the Imperium is, materially, far more similar to State capitalist projects of colonized countries than it is with colonizers. Or like if the Black Templars were real, they'd put every single racist or other bigot they encounter to death immediately for betraying humanity. The Emperor, who is definitely a fucked up dude who does a lot of evil shit sometimes, would still be disgusted by the so called "US" or "Canada" as he was with the various other warlords of old Terra, because it is a heresy against humanity. This argument hinges on the idea that when the Emperor, the Black Templar, Astartes in general, Malcador, etc talk about humanity/mankind, that they're talking about people.
They're not talking about people, they don't give a SHIT about people as individuals, hence why most people within the Imperium have a horrific quality of life.
Like this premise is predicated on the idea that just because the ruling class of the Imperium talk endlessly about humanity, it means they adhere to humanist principles and they absolutely do not lol
It's why every baseline life is seen as having no intrinsic value beyond existing as the disposable tinder used to feed the flames of what they're actually talking about: The continued survival of the species by any means necessary.
"Humanity" to them is a vague general abstract concept, it's not about people.
It's similar to how the Third Reich talked endlessly about the German people, but were really just talking about the state. The actual individual citizens of Germany--and I'm talking about "Aryan" citizens, who had the best quality of life available--had a pretty shit existence under Hitler. You are nothing, you simply exist to serve the interests of the eternal war machine.

Abhumans are treated as second class citizens despite still being human. People who end up mutants through no fault of their own are hunted and killed, despite still being human. Psykers are vilified and thrown onto nightmarish Black Ships, despite being human. The poor are regarded as barely sentient trash, despite being human and the vast majority of the citizenry.
I mean, fuck, slavery is everywhere in the Imperium. There are child slaves.
If the Black Templar were as invested in the welfare of human life as you perceive it, they'd be outraged by such blatant cruelty and injustice towards members of humanity
But they aren't, because they don't give a shit. If they encountered a guy calling someone the f-slur, it'd probably register as a weird archaic form of bigotry, but they wouldn't do anything about it because it has nothing to do with their goals and values. They'd be as blandly indifferent to that as they are to all of the other varieties of bigotry and cruelty that exist within the Imperium in the 30th to 40th millenniums. That shit's all incidental.

In reality, he's perfectly content with practices (slavery, economic exploitation, feeding baselines into the meatgrinder of war, villifying certain classes of people, etc.) that directly contradict his mission statement. Because the Emperor is a callous, results-focused hypocrite who is so fixated on the bigger picture and so detached from baseline human life that the actual material results of his decisions mean nothing to him.

They only live 80 or so years and then get replaced by a new crop, so what difference does it make if they die 40 years earlier than planned. A difference of 40 years is NOTHING to him. And then by the time we get to the 40th millennia, they're not even truly aiming for a brighter future, they're JUST trying to heave the bleeding half-dead body of humanity into the next day. "Who gives a fuck about self-actualization, we're just trying to survive" type shit.
