NFL Week 16 Picks

Here’s a link to my YouTube channel. I post regularly about all things Eagles, NFL, and other things inside the world of sports.
The Problem with Thursday Night Football
Football is one of America’s greatest pastimes, but recently NFL players have expressed displeasure with the product of Thursday Night Football. Most recently in the news, New Orleans Saints franchise QB and hall of famer Drew Brees came out and said injuries that occurred in Thursday night’s matchup vs the Atlanta Falcons are a direct result of playing on Thursday night. Drew Brees is certainly big influence in the NFL, but let’s look at the numbers because after all numbers don’t lie.
It’s no question that NFL players have the toughest job of all professional athletes in sports today. When compared to other sports, the NFL has everyone beat when it comes to the physical nature of their sport. Players are constantly falling victim to injuries such as an ACL tear, concussion, broken arms/legs, and more. In 2016 alone there were 244 concussions reported and 56 ACL tears. The point is the NFL needs to start cracking down on big injuries such as these and quickly. One solution to preventing injuries is reducing the playing time. Some people suggest that eliminating TNF will help with this. In terms of playing time, it doesn’t do anything actually. If a football is not played on Thursday night, it will be played on Sunday. If you want to reduce playing time, play 10 minute quarters instead of 15 minutes or maybe play less games in a season. The NFL will never do these things though because money talks. The reality is that each NFL team is given hundreds of millions of dollars from the NFL for media, sponsorships, etc. The commercials the NFL runs during the games are just as important to them as the game itself. Will the NFL make the wise decision for it’s players? Probably not. In fact, there have even been discussions about extending the season to 18 weeks. Wow.
The Verdict
The NFL is most profitable sports organization in the US today. It’s stupid to think they will make adjustments to protect their players. What the NFL fails to realize though is that as players go down to injury so do ratings. 2017 has been a very upsetting year because of injury. Because of injury we’ve seen players like Aaron Rodgers, JJ Watt, DeShaun Watson, and most recently Carson Wentz go down for most of the season. The players are the product that fans come to see and turn on their TV to watch. You take away them, the NFL is out of business. We’ll see what precautions the NFL takes after one it’s biggest injury ridden season yet.
Eagle Watch: #FaithinFoles
I am not the first, nor will I be the last to say that Nick Foles is one of the best backup QB’s to have in this league. As a die hard fan of the Birds, I can’t help but be optimistic that this team can make a Super Bowl run. My question to doubters is...Why Not?
Let’s see the potential roadblocks the Eagles will face on their way to the Super Bowl this year.
#1: No Carson Wentz
This is the biggest one of all. Carson Wentz was having an MVP caliber year and his ability to extend plays will be missed. However, this team’s success is not entirely built on Carson Wentz. The Eagles defense ranks #1 in stopping the run game and 13th in the pass game. Not to mention the defense also ranks #4 in Total YPGA with 294. The point of me mentioning this is our defense is solid. Not perfect, but solid. We also have a great backfield with Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement, and LeGarrette Blount. If we can establish our running game and get stops on defense, that will take the pressure off Foles which will lead to him making less mistakes. Foles also has way better weapons now than he had back in 2013. Remember Riley Cooper and Jason Avant? No disrespect to those guys, but they made up two thirds of the Eagles starting WR’s in 2013. Compare that to Alshon Jeffrey, Torrey Smith, and Nelson Agholor. It’s not even close. The WR group Foles has now is way better. If Foles can come in and play well and our D steps up their game, the Eagles will be in a great position for a Super Bowl run without Carson Wentz.
#2: Competition in the NFC
Let’s quickly go over the top teams in the NFC besides the Eagles as of 12/15. In order by seeds is the Vikings, Rams, Saints, Panthers, and Falcons. All of these teams are beatable. The Vikings didn’t play well last week in Carolina, the Rams may not even win their division, the Saints somehow managed to find a way to lose a game to the Falcons when Matt Ryan threw 3 picks, Cam Newton can’t carry the Panthers forever, and the Falcons are barely hanging on to that 6th seed. In three weeks, this playoff picture could look completely different. The Eagles have the manpower to beat every team listed above, even with Nick Foles at QB. The only two teams that the Eagles will have trouble with is the Vikings and Saints. The Vikings have a stellar defense and the Saints have a fantastic offense led by Drew Brees. The good news for Eagles fans is Nick Foles has some playoff experience. Can we beat these teams? Absolutely. Will it be tough? You bet it will. My money is on a Eagles Vikings championship game.
Final Thoughts
This season has been a roller coaster ride for the Eagles and Carson Wentz’s injury is just the icing on the cake. But I have Faith in our Birds. As long as you have a ticket to the playoff dance, anything can happen. Only time will tell whether the Birds have enough left in the tank to bring the Lombardi trophy back to a city that so desperately deserves. Thank you for reading!
