Can I ask for some prayers on a private prayer request please? Something horrible happened in my family tonight (it’s not about me directly or I would tell yall) and I’m way way way in over my head and out of my depths dealing with this. This person needs some serious prayers (and some for my own mental wellbeing in trying to help would be much appreciated as well)

this is why part of me hates that the “anime was a mistake” quote was memed. Miyazaki genuinely felt that way and deeply regrets his contributions to popularizing anime especially in the west

Anime has helped contribute to all kinds of disgusting shit not limited to the sexualizing of children ( yes you racist dipshits japan isn’t all about child sexualization the age of consent laws are to protect minors in relationships with other minors ) sexualizing of incest, abuse, abusive power dynamics, it’s given racist and nationalist mangaka a platform to spew their garbage and has completely bombed Japanese culture in appropriation.

fun fact? the number of sexual assaults and other horrendous acts that happen to Japanese girls and boys? Done by white tourists with self proclaimed “yellow fever” looking for their “waifus” and shit.

I think it’s reallly important that anime fans and producers address this. Miyazaki is totally right, that anime has helped normalize or trivialize a lot of disgusting crud out there. Glorification of incest and abuse, the sexualization of teens and children, and the objectification of Asians have all been results of the anime culture. Sad thing is, it’s not off in the fringes, this is mainstream anime culture. I loved watching Pokemon when I was little, and I started watching other anime after that because I wanted more good cartoons. But I’ve found that it’s hard to find shows that completely sit well with me. Most have fan-service featuring teenage girls–or prepubescent girls. A lot of it leans towards outright pornography. I’m so glad that Miyazaki said that, because many friends of mine don’t have issues posting ecchi pictures of girls, and my refusal to watch certain series for normalizing disturbing behavior is met with derision, as if I’m just being a “prude.” For example, I refused to watch Irregulars at Magic High School because I heard that it actively ships the two main protagonists–a biological brother and sister. A friend was trying to use arguments like there was more to the plot than the incest. Well, I don’t doubt that, but that doesn’t change the fact that the message it’s sending is sick, and there are other good anime out there that don’t promote that kind of twisted relationship. 

We need to make anime better, guys. We need to stop referring to our favorite characters as “waifus” or “husbandos,” because that language promotes sexualization and “ownership” of Asians. We need to stop drawing fanart of teens and young children in seductive poses. We need to stop asking for fanservice, and we need to give negative feedback when we see it–like switching to different shows that don’t zoom in on young girls’ thighs. 

How about a world where we note characters’ personalities instead of their boobs or abs? How about a world where anime beach scenes follow silliness and games–and not anoyone’s butt? We need to make a world where we look at people’s eyes instead of their legs. Because then we’d start respecting real people, too. I want my anime to be more like that.
