Well it was only a matter of time until I made at least one splatoon oc.
Ramblings about the character and fossils, inspirations and all that below.
Ami is an inkling themed around the ammonoid and nautiloid family of animals, which both fall under the category of cephalopod.
Unlike the squids and octopuses found in splatoon (oh and irl as well I suppose) they have not lost their shells.
Ammonoids are an extinct sub-class of cephalopod and consisted of goniatites, ceratites and ammonites.
As mentioned above Ami’s skirt is based on the suture lines of the ammonoids which get increasingly complex from goniatites to ammonites.
I suppose Ami’s skirt would be closest to goniatites? (I don’t even want to think about trying to pixel art ammonite suture lines).
Moving on to her weapon, the nautilus 47, unlike ammonioids nautiloids can still be found in modern day, although their species variety has been greatly reduced over the years, with straight shelled nautiloids only being found in fossils.
Similar to ammonoids nautiloids also had suture lines, these being less complex than all types of ammonoids.
Obviously I couldn’t resist giving her the splatoon 1 splatling victory animation…
If you were curious what the 47 and 79 in the nautilus weapons stands for (like I was before making this) it’s the atomic number of silver and gold respectively (thanks splatoon wiki).
I also found out that there’s actually a nautilus character in one of the splatoon 2 bands (coincidentally the one I already thought she’d be a fan of).
Using this as an excuse to explain her instrument, its based off a heteromorph ammonite.
Heteromorph ammonites are well, I suppose they’re just ammonites that are a bit quirky y’know.
They’re pretty rare but did occur naturally, which is pretty crazy given how strange some of them look.
Okay that’s me done with all my notes and ramblings, I’m going back to salmon run now.
Well as of two hours ago it is officially christmas in my time zone and what else would you want at 2 in the morning than someone repeatedly ringing bells.... festively of course.
I’m still not over the fact we’re actually getting xenoblade chronicles 3 this year AND its a continuation of BOTH the first 2 games? I have so many questions and cannot wait for the answers!
