15 Romantic Actions to Use Instead of a Kiss
1. Lacing Fingers Together
Not just holding hands, actually interlacing them. It's a small physical detail that reads as far more deliberate and possessive than a loose hand-hold.
2. Nuzzling Into Their Neck or Hair
Face pressed in, breathing them in for a second. Works especially well in a quiet moment after something stressful, when a character needs to physically ground themselves in the other person.
3. A Gentle Bite or Nip
Lip, shoulder, ear, wherever fits the scene. Playful if the tone's light, charged if it's not.
4. Massaging Their Hands or Shoulders
Practical and intimate at the same time. Great for a character who shows affection through action instead of words, since this lets them do something instead of saying it.
5. Tracing Idle Patterns on Their Skin
Fingertips moving without any real purpose, along an arm, a palm, a shoulder. It signals comfort and closeness better than almost anything verbal could.
6. Running Fingers Through Their Hair
This is the absent-minded kind of thing a character does without fully realizing it. Tip: this one's especially good for a scene where someone's comforting the other after a nightmare or a bad day.
7. Gripping Their Waist or Hip to Pull Them Closer
Direct, a little urgent, and it closes distance fast in a way that reads as wanting rather than just affectionate. Could also substitute with belts, capes/cloaks, pockets, ties, collars and more.
8. Trailing Fingertips Down an Arm or Spine
The key is to make this deliberately slow. This is a good one for tension-building specifically, since the anticipation of where the hand's going matters more than the touch itself.
9. Scratching Nails Lightly Down Their Back or Scalp
Small, physical, and surprisingly underused given how much sensory detail it gives you to work with.
10. Pressing a Palm Flat Against Their Chest
Feeling the heartbeat under their hand, whether from adrenaline or nerves. It's a small gesture that gives you a built-in excuse to describe how fast someone's heart is racing. Also works with the wrist or side of the neck for a more possessive scene.
11. Brushing a Thumb Across Their Cheekbone
Slow and deliberate, usually paired with a character just looking at the other for a beat too long.
12. Wiping Something Off Their Face
Blood, dirt, tears, doesn't matter. The act of gently cleaning someone up says care in a way dialogue rarely manages.
13. Tucking Hair Behind Their Ear
Small, almost automatic, and very cute if the character doing it doesn't even seem to notice they're doing it. Similar actions would be holding back their open hair, or tying/braiding their hair when it keeps getting in the way.
14. Holding Their Face Without Kissing Them
The almost-kiss that doesn't happen. Use this when you want the reader leaning forward in their seat, desperate for something that isn't coming yet. Pair it with their foreheads resting against each other, their eyes fluttering shut as they just breathe each other in. Works pretty well for goodbyes, or if they’re trying to steal a moment in public without too much PDA.
15. Holding Eye Contact a Beat Too Long
The simplest one on this list and still one of the hardest to write well. It's all in the extra second that shouldn't be there but is.

10 Ways to Show Grief Without Making Your Character Cry
Grief doesn't always look like crying. Here are some ideas for how to realistically portray it outside of the ‘screaming, crying, throwing up’ phase.
1. Burying Themselves in Work or School: Suddenly the most productive they've ever been, taking on extra shifts, extra assignments, anything that keeps their hands and mind too busy to land on the actual loss.
2. Avoiding Anywhere That Reminds Them of the Person: A restaurant, a route they used to walk together, an entire side of town. They'll go out of their way and never explain why, and probably won't even clock it as avoidance themselves.
3. Refusing to Change Anything of Theirs: The room stays exactly as it was. The voicemail doesn't get deleted. Moving even one object can feel like erasing them, so nothing moves at all.
4. Overcompensating With Normalcy: Laughing a little too readily, insisting they're fine a little too often. This one's great for a character who thinks showing grief means burdening the people around them.
5. Picking Fights With People Trying to Help: Grief makes people prickly in strange directions. Someone offering comfort can genuinely feel unbearable, and lashing out is sometimes easier than admitting they need it.
6. Taking Care of Everyone Else's Grief Instead of Their Own: Comforting siblings, managing funeral logistics, checking in on everyone but themselves. Tip: this one's especially good for an oldest-sibling or caretaker-type character, since it lets them delay their own grief almost indefinitely.
7. Sudden Reckless Behavior: Driving too fast, drinking too much, taking risks they never would have before. It's less about wanting to get hurt and more about needing to feel something other than the numbness.
8. An Obsessive Need for Control: Rigid routines, excessive cleaning, rearranging things that don't need rearranging. When one massive thing feels completely out of their control, controlling everything else becomes the coping mechanism.
9. Talking About Them in Present Tense: "She loves this song," not "loved." A small grammatical slip that says more about where their head still is than an entire monologue would.
10. Taking Up Something the Person Loved: Picking up their guitar, rewatching their favorite show, cooking their recipes. It's a way of keeping them present without having to say out loud that they're gone.

"i think cato's protection over clove was more brotherly" in the clato tag actually didn't anger me, even though this ship is my OTP and the kind of romantic relationship i hope to have someday, because it was a reasonable and valid opinion based on their canon dynamic and honestly? can be supported by the text lol. but "person a saw person b as their child" about a ship i don't care as much about fucking enraged me with how stupid of a take it was because there is nothing in canon to suggest that lol and there are a couple other reasons i don't want to mention yet until i calm down
can the hunger games fandom just end this bullshit trend of always saying "person a sees person b as their sibling/their child" about ships they don't like. like you know it's possible for people to feel familial feelings/platonic affection toward each other without having to assign labels/nuclear family roles to them. you know that. right?
one of the things about the hunger games fandom is that i'll have a dynamic i or others ship romantically, with plausible evidence they have that chemistry and then someone will come into the tag (the tag. for the ship. not tagging the characters individually) expressing their belief the dynamic is familial and "brother/sister" or "parent/child." and this is a perfect valid opinion to have in a vacuum but it also gets annoying to see on my dash especially when it's a common ship
Reblogs and put in the tags your top 5 ships of all time
The Reapings
The name called didn’t matter. This was District Two. Tributes weren’t chosen a week before the Games. They were made from birth. They were born knowing the year they’d enter the Games. They were born knowing exactly when to call out the infamous “I volunteer!” salute. There was a certain peacefulness in knowing you had a small portion of control over such terrible things. Except the name was called and the female career for this year said nothing. She stood there. Staring at the ground. She was a coward. Clove knew it from their first meeting, but this was beyond a disgrace. District Two would forever remember her as such. But the real disgrace was the fact that other districts would know their female career backed out at the last second. And that Cato would be coming in with someone who wasn’t prepared for war. She couldn’t have that. Everyone’s eyes were on the career who was not volunteering, except for his. His eyes were strictly on her and she felt them from across the courtyard. Willing her to keep her mouth shut. Knowing her well enough to know she couldn’t, but he hoped nonetheless. “I volunteer!” She cried out. There was a silent release of tension as she started toward the Justice Hall steps. This wasn’t her year. She was supposed to go next year, but her district needed her. Cato needed her. He’d come home this way, like he always promised her he would. The name wasn’t even out of the jar when Cato’s voice filled the silent courtyard. She watched with a strong stare as he climbed the stairs. Their district cheered, relieved that this embarrassment was sidestepped. His eyes met hers in a challenging way. He didn’t want her to volunteer, but he was surged with pride at her willingness to do so. Yes, he’d come home. She just wouldn’t be there to greet him.

i miss when two years ago i retained the knowledge of my anatomy class because i'm telling you right now i could not explain the different parts of the heart and their functions/the pathway of blood, at least not very well and then in my WIP from senior year of high school where i put clove in the situation of dissecting a pig heart the way i got to do, i have her rattling off the mechanics like an expert
ahem. i forgot this was in my drafts when i was looking for something else. i have no idea what fic this was supposed to be a part of. i love whatever is going on here between them, though!
They stumble back to camp, hardly discreet but not having it in themselves to care. Or, at least, Cato waves off the concern with a sweeping gesture of his hand. Let the other Tributes, weaklings, cannon fodder, hear him and Clove coming from a mile away. They were no match for born and bred soldiers of Two.
On a normal day, Clove would be appalled by such careless arrogance, whether or not it was an accurate assessment of their opponents, but she's busy at the moment fighting off another particular feeling when his fingers wrap loosely around her wrist and he pulls her forward absent-mindedly with a dazzling grin aimed back in her direction. She must have lost her mind, because Clove almost obeys the impulse of taking it a step farther and linking their hands together while her feet blindly follow his will.
She thought she'd mastered it, pushing whatever went on between them to the side, deep into a cavern of the things she would rather not acknowledge. Yet there's a painful awareness of something she can't ignore, an urgency flowing through her bloodstream and clouding her best judgement.
Clove has always gotten what she wanted - the top rank in her division, the sharpest blade, the best Training instructors an Academy student could ask for. A spot in the Games, which she'd had to claim with her claws digging in and several concealed lethal weapons expertly wielded against challengers. Despite his irritating arrogance and lack of emotional control, she sees that same work ethic, that appreciation for where they are, in her District partner. That glowing light in his eyes as he barks orders, veins starkly pressed up against the skin of his bulky arms, sweat in droplets clinging to his hairline and neck, the power and determination in how he moves.
There are a lot of things very, very wrong with wanting her District partner, a list miles long and spanning the mountains of their home. Reminding herself of Cato's many flaws hardly calms her racing heart, and doesn't alleviate the dull throbbing in her chest when she looks at him.
It's just simple hormones, Clove knows. Basic needs, urges, libido, the works. She's not a stranger to it, nor is she naive in these matters - her education on the subject came from the gossip of locker rooms after Training, as well as mandatory lectures on the necessity of contraception. Whatever Trainees got up to in their downtime wasn't anyone's business, as long as it didn't complicate a successful path to the Games or remove one less potential Victor from the talent pool. Other than a couple of restless nights, she hadn't found the time to seek out any flings or partners, and certainly didn't talk to anyone enough to catch feelings.
Not that there could be any involved here. In the Arena, it is impossible, and that road only leads to heartbreak.
But when she comes to accept the fact that she might just want everything - the glory, the bloodshed, the triumph, but also him, if only for a night, in this sweet moment of time where half their competitors are eliminated and they can take a well-earned break before cutting through even more, Clove decides that she will go for it like she does with anything else. Her shrewd, dark green eyes settle on Cato, meeting his thoughtful gaze, and neither of them shy away from the stare-off. She takes him in, the ironic warmth and softness in his expression, how deceptively casually he sits back against a tree with a tight grip on his sword, that dried speck of crimson blood on his neck that she may get the chance to clean away with her tongue.
After a quick peek to their allies, ensuring all of them are really unconscious - not that they could sneak up on her and Cato anyways, what with their advanced training compared to the mediocrity of One's and the pathetic lack of preparedness from Twelve - she shuffles forward, letting the crackling firelight illuminate her path and ignoring the discomfort of sticky dirt and harsh leaves and sticks against her palms. Clove finds herself crawling toward him on her hands and knees, which surely must make him feel special because she could never be this way for anyone else. From his slightly widened eyes and how they are glued to her every move, she knows Cato recognizes the significance of this moment. With a confidence that is somewhat feigned, she straddles his lap, intertwines her fingers behind his neck.
"Well, this is new," he whispers softly, seeming delightedly surprised, hands settling to rightful places on her hips. She immediately likes their weight, and when her shirt rises up slightly so that his skin makes contact with hers, their warmth. If she's reading his body language right, Clove's advance is most certainly welcome.
"Why?" She cocks her head to the side, mocking but also a little curious. With a gentle push on the midcenter of her back, Cato lessens the distance between them as she speaks. "I don't suppose you've ever had a girl on top of you before."
To her frustration, he looks less intimidated than amused. "I've done that plenty," he informs her, not bragging, just a plain fact. "Never thought I'd be doing any of that in an Arena, though. Best not to mix business with pleasure, don't you think?" It's difficult to take him at his word, though, when his eyes keep dipping to her mouth before respectfully coming back to her, and his breath hitches slightly as she adjusts her seating position until she's sure she's resting on the beginnings of a hard-on.
"Why not? One of us isn't going to leave here anyways. You might as well have something to enjoy for your last days." She grins at him cheekily, smothering her laughter to not wake the others while he growls low in his throat - the vibration hitting her ears a little too pleasantly - and lightly pinches her side.
"Brat," the accusation falls off his tongue, tender and sweet. The heavy and hot images of what she might allow him to do to her in the cover of night, with the security of darkness and their allies' unconsciousness, still linger in her mind... but this isn't too bad either, especially not when she could swear that his arms firmly and purposefully grasping at her middle constitutes him holding her.
"Never thought about what you'd eat for your last meal?" The bold statement slips out before she can fully think about it and shut the hell up, but to her relief, she's rewarded with a brilliant smile, making those hard, granite features seem so open, friendly, affectionate - even if he is not any of those things, judging by the fact that he probably would take her up on her suggestive tone and eat her alive if she let him.
He says nothing more, and Clove puts off the act of kissing him for a little while longer. She's not sure why there's a hesitation, but ever the gentleman, Cato doesn't push it. He seems just as content to be here with her, waits patiently for her to get comfortable as she rotates until her back faces his chest and she's lying against him, them keeping watch together. Alert and always aware of their surroundings, Clove marvels at how the two of them make a good team.
She harshly bats away the sentiment of the thought before it can expand into more dangerous ideas, like the notion that if they weren't both fated to fight one another for the crown, they would have been good together. Such wild fantasies are counterproductive, and won't do either of them good.
Clove sinks into his touch anyways, holding on tight to the arms that form a noose of heat and muscle and safety around her neck.
