all that said the guy with my car insurance company who answered the phone was so fucking funny. he had a heavy Georgia accent which endeared me to him immediately and he was sooo worried about me and apologetic that there was no one to send to my aid and I said "that's okay. if i end up missing though they're gonna interview you as the last person who heard from me. what if there's a documentary?" and he said "ooooooo, can I start drama?" I said, "well, what kind?" And he said, "I'm gonna tell them you said you saw a green flash in the sky over the field and I heard strange voices then the line went dead."

Whooping cough cases have surged in the US since the beginning of the year, infecting Americans at a faster pace than any time since the mid-1950s as national vaccination rates decline and protection wanes. The bacterial infection also known as pertussis has sickened 8,077 people in the US through April 16, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s more than double the same period a year ago, when the agency confirmed 3,847 cases, and rivals the 2012 outbreak that was the biggest in half a century. At least four people have died from whooping cough this year, including two infants in Louisiana, an adult in Idaho and a child in South Dakota who was infected with both influenza and pertussis. Apologies to my moots have seen me talk about this before, but yeah I got whooping cough aka pertussis in 2019

I missed a month of work. For two weeks I couldn't sleep longer than half an hour at a time because I had to sit up and cough up massive amounts of phlegm. I became so sleep-deprived I thought I might go crazy.

When you're having a coughing fit, you physically cannot stop coughing. The "whoop" sound (which will horrify everyone you live with) is you trying desperately to breathe in after you've coughed so much you've run out of air. (There are videos on youtube if you really want to horrify yourself.)

I coughed so hard I vomited multiple times a day. People cough so hard they urinate themselves, get hernias, or break ribs. My abs hurt from how hard I was coughing.

Until the acute stage is over (which was two weeks for me) literally nothing works. Nothing. Not codeine, not tessalon perles, not a humidifier, not alcohol, not cough drops. Nothing. You just have to have to get through it. You have to cough up the shit in your lungs. You will feel like you're drowning during some coughing fits and have to suppress panicking, too!

And I was "lucky" because my acute stage was two weeks--I was vaccinated, it had just mostly worn off (because the vaccination needs boosting!), and they also gave me antibiotics. But for some people it's multiple months. In some parts of the world the name for pertussis is "hundred-day cough." There's a reason.

I was a healthy 39 year old when I got it. It took months for me to be able to ride my bicycle or walk up a flight of stairs without coughing. Every strong smell was painful to breathe. It's possible I have permanent lung damage.

It's super contagious. It kills babies--half of all babies under a year old with pertussis have to be hospitalized.

YOU DO NOT WANT PERTUSSIS. YOU DO NOT WANT TO GIVE IT TO ANYONE ELSE.

KEEP YOUR GOD DAMNED PERTUSSIS VACCINE UPDATED

Especially if you live in a place where a lot of people are anti-vaxx. The recommendation I've seen is to get your tdap (tetanus, diptheria, and pertussis) vaccine every ten years. Most doctors will happily give it to you if you ask, even if you don't remember when your last one was; and lots of pharmacies have it.
