My favorite musical releases of 2015
(In no particular order) Some albums and EPs I really enjoyed alot from this year, thanks for taking the time to read!
1.Deathless- Ostraca, Listen:http://ostraca.bandcamp.com/releases
A really heartfelt and beautifully crafted chaotic screamo post-metal album which renders emotion and sonic energy that fully holds the listener. With nods to nothingness, human nature, and despair, the virginia trio out-do themselves with the harshness, complemented by equal parts gentleness, not expected from run-of-the-mill extreme music.
2. Anatomy and Dissection- Caust, Listen:Â https://caustva.bandcamp.com/
Pummeling, explosive, destructive, bleak. The new EP from the âskramzâ 5-piece doesnât let up the energy for even a brief moment, constantly bombarding the listener with dissonant yet beautiful guitar leads followed by excruciating breakdowns. Subject-matter typically concerning topics of death and manipulation, with a full force jest at anguish (it is no surprise that the bassist and guitarist of Ostraca joined Caust for this EP). The short (Under 9 minutes) release of distress leaves all who endeavor craving more.
@caustva @5cr3am0
3.Trading Basics- Palm, Listen:Â https://palmnewyork.bandcamp.com/
An extremely enjoyable debut LP from the NY based four-piece combines multiplex elements of âmathyâ rhythms, relaxed melodic vocals, and shrill harmoniously catchy guitar leads. Each song amazes and captivates, truly one of the most unique releases of 2015.
4.Jacobus- Jacobus, Listen:Â http://jacobus.bandcamp.com/album/jacobus-e-p
Independent musicâs unknown jewel, the trio that is Jacobus play with such understanding of each other, the end product is remarkable. Fun and enjoyable guitar melodies transcend over the most simply happy vocals, creating a lovable short EP that reminds all of the childlike innocence that still exists in music.
@eztunefeedâ @dylanhertzâ
5.so the flies donât come- Milo, Listen:Â https://miloraps.bandcamp.com/
Philosophy and awareness are two strained motifs on the new Milo LP that makes an excellent addition to the continuity of the artful hip-hop that I hold so dear. The simplicity in the beats and flourishing instrumentals back-up Rory Ferreiraâs lyricism on racial inequalities, as well as other themes aforesaid, really make this album an extremely loved release I continue to come back to for contemplation. The recherche and abstruse feelings given off by Milo donât hold any pretense, but instead cascade into the subconsciousness ever so enticingly.Â
6.Circle Thinking- I Hate Sex, Listen: http://ihatesex.bandcamp.com/album/circle-thinking
Another debut release that hits hard through eloquence and reposeful animosity, the buckling intensity brought through melancholia is one not to be forgotten. Female-fronted emotive punk is in my perspective, an essential gem to extreme music and this EP stuck out in my mind for its persistent and distinct form.
@hidracula @dogxlover
7. As it Were- Marietta, Listen:Â https://whereismarietta.bandcamp.com/Â
RIP
Words can not describe the love I have for this final album of the philly based twinkly emo outfit Marietta. The melodies are the most catchy out of any release this year, the musicianship is superior (as expected), and the emotions are clear and concise. The quartet hold nothing back on this release and it is with a heavy heart that I see them go.
8.Facility- Facility, Listen:Â http://facility.bandcamp.com/album/s-t-ep
Hardcore and screamo never came together more excellently before the band Facility emerged. Ballads on personal experiences, purpose, and defying the causes that constrain are what the NJ punk group focuses on with their sophomore EP. Blast beats, intense changing vocals, and tackling break downs can be found on the forceful collection of songs this EP offers. âLike a roof that raised four familiesâ is a pristine example of the twisted guitar melodies followed by flesh-tearing verses facility has crafted with ease and musicianship.
@deskyesterday @academicflexing @xuntilx
9.this is not for you.- Foxtails, Listen:Â https://fffoxtails.bandcamp.com/album/this-is-not-for-you
It is with great luck that I stumbled upon one of the best emo albums of this year, after browsing on a compilation put out by Death of a Modernist, screamo news outlet, I was captured by Foxtails. The group gives gorgeous tales of depression and self-loathing over sparkling guitars with a definitive rhythm section. The lead vocalist, Megan, goes from clear and concise melodic cleans to emotive and powerful screams in songs like âevery window in alcatraz has a view of san franciscoâ and ârandom names always workâ, two personal favorites.
@fforcefed
10. All Fours- Bosse-De-Nage, Listen:Â https://profoundlorerecords.bandcamp.com/album/all-fours
2015 was a year proficient in phenomenal black metal releases, each album more riveting than the next. Bosse-De-Nage driving experiment that is All Fours resonates with me the most out of the plethora of black metal LPs that came out in 2015. What draws me in about All Fours is it accomplishes so much through its musical simplicity. Every aspect, from the tremolo picked harmonious guitar passages, to the heart wrenching vocals, to the blast beat forwardness, falls into place without force, completely naturally. The album doesnât overwhelm nor underwhelm me with complexity and power, yet satisfies all expectations.
Here are 25 releases I enjoyed but I just didnât want to write a thing about them
