Lorelei tilted her head at the unexpected question, smiling as she shook her head slowly. “They’re two separate things, actually. The purpose and outcomes can be pretty similar, but they are read separately.” Leaning forward, she rested her elbows against the counter. “Let me guess, you’ve never been in a metaphysical shop before?”

Charlie seemed totally lost by her words, reaching up and scratching his head. He politely reached out and grabbed a handful of random crystals. “How much are these?” He smiled gently. “but that’s interesting... uh i’ve been in SportsDirect if that counts?”

“I thought it was acceptance is the first step towards recovery?” she laughed, leaning slightly against the wall. She noticed his eyes flicked over her slightly and she hoped he couldn’t see the slight blush of her cheeks. Hopefully the cold air hid it. “Nice to meet you, Charlie. Charlie and his endorphins. Singing does that, nice food, playing on the Wii,” she grinned. “I don’t do that last part. Anymore.”

“Honestly i have no idea, i’m a gym teacher.” He smiled, giving her a cheeky flash of teeth. He couldn’t help but frown when she spoke. “People still play the Wii?” he asked, totally distracted. “I don’t believe you now, it was oddly specific.”

Harriet flopped herself down onto the chair, her hands clutching the warm cup. The winter chill was definitely in the air and her red fingers could feel it. “You know when people say a cup of tea solves most problems. They just might be right…” she took a content sip, the liquid instantly warming her insides. “I mean, unless… that problem involves uh fire breathing dragons or like a tornado storm.” She held her finger up. “But right now I am an exhausted nurse, freezing from outside so it is amazing.”

Charlie shook his head. “I think the dragon would love the tea.” He chuckled. “But... i don’t like tea. Don’t shoot me.” He held his hands up. “But uh the whole nurse thing makes me think I should get you another one.”

Stooping, Lorelei placed the box she’d carried from the back of her store atop the front counter, next to the register. Craning her neck, she stood on tip-toe to peer at the box’s contents, eyes scanning the loose crystals and tarot decks wrapped in cellophane. She was in the midst of considering precisely where she might place the sale items when the bells above the shop door tinkled, alerting her that someone had entered. “Good afternoon!” She called, straightening herself and adding a bright, welcoming smile. “Welcome to Tarot & Tea Leaves! Is there anything I can help you find, or are you just browsing?”

Charlie had no idea why he was even in the store. Perhaps it was just curiosity. He’d been in Prose all his life and yet had never seen the store before. “So... do the Tarot and tea leaves happen together? Or are they two separate things?”

“Bakery coffee,” Merritt pouted, but started walking in the direction of the bakery anyway. “I mean, publishing is busiest in the Fall, so the comedown from the rush is welcome. But between holiday shopping and my freelance work, yeah, I don’t have much free time. How about you?”

Charlie laughed at his cousin’s blatant snobbery. “A little bit of Mer time.” He nudged her, opening the door to the bakery. “Did you happen to pick up my present yet?” He grinned. “Ah finished up work for the holidays now, just... trying to have some down time before the new year.”

“I will deny that you heard anything,” she laughed, smiling as he opened the door. “Okay, fine. I think you earned my name. You took my mocking very well. I’m Elise,” she replied. “You did not just compare running and burning my muscles and lungs to the warm and joy that is coffee.”

“Denial is the first step towards acceptance.” He clicked his tongue. “Nice to meet you Elise, I’m charlie.” His eyes flicked over his new acquaintance. “It releases endorphins.”

Merritt shoved her hands into the pockets of her coat, knees knocking together in the cold that she’d stopped being used to when she left Prose. How her cousin could do it in shorts was beyond her. “Coffee Corner must have changed their hours since I was last here?” she shrugged, “It’s what I get for relying on memory to make plans. Want to grab coffee somewhere else?”

Charlie bounced, trying to hide how cold he was. “Don’t they know how badly i need coffee at this hour?” He put his arm on his side, stretching out the stiffness. “Yeah... you’ve twisted my arm. Come on. I think there’s a bakery up here. Bakery coffee will have to do i suppose.” He nudged his cousin. “How are you doing? Busy?”

“Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. You will never know,” she said with a smile. “Does one need to know a name for that?” she asked before bursting out laughing. “Sorry. I am not like that at all. But I will take the coffee. It may take more than coffee to get me running though.”

“I think i heard it and i know.” he laughed to himself, raising a brow as the woman got the giggles. “I would like to know who’s mocking me, yeah.” He raised a brow, pushing the door open. “You just have to push through it a few times, then it gets addictive. Just like coffee.”

Elise looked down then back up at him again. “If it helps, your knees aren’t a bad shape? Does that help?” she asked with a laugh. “Well, you did say a warm activity. My brain was truing not to make that dirty,” she admitted with a shrug. “I fully admit, I don’t run. Hence the coat, scarf, jumper and hat,” Elise grinned back at him. “I have a cup.”

“Did you just compliment my kneecaps?” She bent his knees, giving them a little wiggle. “Now, you barely know my name.” He chuckled, folding his arms as they headed towards coffee. “Then maybe I’ll get you a refill. And maybe I can persuade you to be my new running buddy.”

Elise was bundled up. She refused to start work without a coffee. Holding the cup firmly between her hands and speed walking to keep as warm as possible, it look her a moment to realise that the guy was talking to her. Her eyes glanced down to his choice of clothes. “Or maybe you should invest in some pants that cover your legs?” she offered, an amused smile on her lips. “Why? Do you need to hide from the cold?”

Charlie looked down at his legs; they were cold. But still he refused to believe there was any other attire to go running in. He rubbed his lips together, looking back at the store. "Who said i was chilly?" he raised a brow. "If you're stopping long enough during a run to get cold you aren't doing it right." She bounced on the spot slightly. "Maybe i just really need caffeine."

December was creeping in with the cold but Charlie was refusing to put his shorts away just yet. He was out for a run; his knees chilling in the winter air. There was even a threat of snow when he’d turned the telly on this morning. He finally stopped, his hands on his hips as the December air burnt his lungs. He chuckled to himself. “It’s definitely getting fresh out here. Maybe i should take up a warm hobby.” He headed towards the building. “Do you know when it opens?”

Lip looked up at the other, giving a small laugh. Of course he knew Pat, he remembered the guy from school. “I don’t know about too early but I feel like I should be holding that ladder for you,” he joked. “I mean, maybe they would put people in good spirits all year round.”

Pat’s eyes lit up seeing Lip, he had always had a soft spot for him. “What’s the worst that could happen? Live on the wild side.” He joked, shaking the ladder. “I definitely need them when i’m storming into this place at 5am for stock days.”

Elise had always loved this time of year. Halloween had passed, Thanksgiving was approaching and she was fully in that Holiday spirit. She gave a little bounce almost as she looked up at the guy on the ladder. Her eyes maybe lingered on his butt for longer than she would admit to anyone. She smiled. “Nope, not one bit. It’s Thanksgiving next week. I am fully in holiday mode.” He nodded. “I support you, though the magic might disappear if you left them up all of the time. Do you want help with anything?”

Pat came down the ladder, smiling at the younger woman. He recognised her pretty simply; Emma’s little sister. Although she wasn’t so little now. “I’m not much of a Thanksgiving guy, my folks do the whole big thing. But the holidays i’m all for.” He raised a brow. “Magic in my tiny bulbs?” He chuckled to himself. “You can hold the ladder if you really want to help.”

Peyton heard someone talking to him and he halted his steps and looked at the work that the other had done on his shop and he smiled while nodding slightly. “Yeah, it looks great and honestly I’m not going to lie to you, I think you should keep them up all year.” They agreed with pat while smiling. “it’s nice to see everyone get in the spirit!”

Pat brushed his hands off, resting them on his hips. “Right? No one says they have to be Christmassy. I’m all about attracting people into the store.” He laughed. “I have a daughter so i think our spirit for the next Christmas begins on New Years day. We make a big thing of it.”

With Olivia spending time with her grandma, Harley was able to get a lot of things done during the day. She was walking down the street with a cup of coffee in her hand when she passed by Pat already putting up lights on his store. “No, I don’t think it’s too early, and I think the lights look great,” she said with a smile as she looked at her fellow single parent. “How are ya doin’, Pat? It’s been a while.”

Pat smiled, seeing Harley approach. He wiped his hands on his jeans where the lights had been slightly wet. “Exactly, adds a little something.” He chuckled to himself. “Yeah... i’ve had my head in fixing this place up and getting Jen back at school.”

He liked the way the street looked at night and he was excited to do his part. “It’s not too early is it?” He asked the passer-by, making his way down the ladder slowly and then stepping back to look at the store. “They look so good, i should just leave them up all year.

BIO.

Pat grew up in Bradford Springs with his parents and two sisters. He had never had many ambitions in life but had always been fascinated by machinery. This started as a fascination for all things to do with theme parks. But he loved to figure out how things worked and the fact that his father owned a hardware store only seemed to enable this passion in him.  Pat got accepted to the Colorado School of engineering and he completed his first two years. But when his father announced his retirement, he dropped out of school to continue running the store. With a cheeky name change and a fresh lick of paint; the store was officially his. Pat knew what he wanted, and he never wanted to leave Bradford Springs. He’s happy with the simple thing and the quiet life.

Pat’s decision to remain in Colorado for college was based on his childhood sweetheart. They had dated throughout high school and at the end of their senior year, they had conceived a baby. Pat’s parents helped support them and this enabled Pat and his partner to go to college locally. They lived together for some time in Bradford Springs before splitting up in their mid-twenties.

The end of the relationship came due to differences in directions in their lives. Pat was happy in Bradford Springs. He never saw a need to stretch his wings or leave. His partner didn’t feel the same way. She wasn’t happy owning a Hardware store. Pat always knew that if he had a child, he wanted to raise them in Bradford Springs, where he was raised. These differences resulted in the separation and eventually divorce.  The pair have joint custody over their daughter and Pat does most of the childcare while his ex works on her career. Pat doesn’t mind this arrangement and doesn’t resent his ex, he’s happy for her to see Jenny as much as she wants.

Pat’s focus in life is being a single dad. Although he’s a very active member of the town and takes a huge interest in local politics and local business owners. He frequents town business owner meetings and is always looking out for the little guys. Pat is still close to his parents and his sisters, whom he sees every weekend for family dinners. His daughter is now getting older and is able to talk Pat and Pat is realising he’s probably bitten off more then he can chew.

Pat is protective, loyal and kind and is always the first to approach anyone in need. Although he has a firmer side and hates anyone that breaks the rules.
