First year MFA student Lydia Callan Prakel tells their story about coming to CCAD after studying art therapy. At CCAD, Lydia has the space and freedom to explore their identity and how it coexists in their artistic work. The graduate program at CCAD allows for genuine mentorship to develop.

By CCAD alum Ryan Green!
In this CCAD Story, Danielle Tucker talks about her love of animation and how that fueled her desire to pursue a degree in Game Art & Design, launching at Columbus College of Art & Design in fall of 2020. Danielle credits the amazing teachers who encourage her with their excitement for all things gaming related.
Get ready for some groovy hijinks, guys! I’m starting up a Coolsville comic of my own design to satiate my thirst for Scooby Doo! I haven’t enjoyed how their arcs have been going as of late, so I am starting up a whole new one. Stay tuned for future character profiles and story info :D
Love it when art meets sidewalk during Wellness Week.
No one throws a Halloween party like CCAD students. Costumes are always on top of the game!
Photos from the 2019 CCAD Fashion Show can be peeped here.
Otherworld, the much-talked-about new art installation-meets-escape-room-meets-haunted-house-meets-playground-for-grownups sits in an otherwise-abandoned strip mall parking lot on Columbus’ East Side. The building housing Otherworld previously was home to a Sports Authority and its exterior gives little indication of the wild scene—make that scenes—inside the 40,000-square-foot space.
And playing a key role in it all is Columbus College of Art & Design grad Scott Schaaf (Illustration, 2017), Art Director for the $2 million project, which has drawn raves from the likes of the New York Times and Thrillist (which named it “One of America’s Best New Attractions), not to mention a slew of media outlets from around Columbus and Ohio.
And Schaaf wasn’t the only CCAD alum working on Otherworld: The 40-plus artists for the project also included Isabel Hickok (Cinematic Arts, 2017), Stewart Reber (Fine Arts, 2017), Nikos Rutkowski (Fine Arts, 2002), and Pilgrim Heidi Kambitsch (Fine Arts, 1999). Read more.
Shout out to Danielle Mutispaugh (Animation, 2019 who had work featured in this adorable demo pack for Toon Boom’s Harmony 17.
For Alanta Slone (Fashion Design, 2018), inspiration comes in all forms. The off-whites, creams, tans, browns, and mauvey pinks of the initial color scheme for her CCAD Fashion Show collection were inspired by flowers from her grandmother’s funeral, which she could not attend due to a study abroad opportunity at the London College of Fashion. “It was really sad at first, but I thought this is something I can turn into a good thing,” Slone says. Learn more about Alanta’s collection.
If you picked up a recent copy of Columbus Monthly you probably spotted some of our Fashion Design students showing off designs you’ll find on the runway, Friday, May 10.
There’s still time to check out the 2019 CCAD MFA & MDes Thesis Exhibition which runs through April 28 in Beeler Gallery.
Did you miss the CCAD Spring Art Fair? Don’t worry, we’ll be back with another art fair in December. Stay tuned!
Fashion Show photoshoot days are one of our favorite days. On Sunday, March 24, we took over the third floor of Crane with #CCADalumni Marcus Morris to shoot the 2019 CCAD Fashion Show looks.
Our annual CCAD’s Got Talent returned on Friday, March 22. This year’s event was hosted by local entertainer Roxy Nikole with three familiar (and beloved) faces from CCAD judging the competition: Chris Mundell, Lydia Rall, and Wallace Tanksley. The winner this year was the band “nancy”. The band includes John Martino (Illustration, 2020), James Vollmer (Illustration, 2020), Isaac Kauffman (Illustration, 2020), and Josh Heinmiler (Illustration, 2020). Second place was D’Angelo Jackson (Animation, 2020) and third place was Gweneth Keith (Illustration, 2022).
Rose White (Interior Design, 2019) was a voracious reader in high school and on one of the many afternoons she spent reading at the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s main branch, she came across a book, Brooklyn Interiors, that would inspire her career path into interior design.
One thing White has learned during her time at Columbus College of Art & Design is with the most successful interior design projects, the designer has a personal connection to the project and also understands the client. For White, who grew up in predominantly low-income areas around Columbus, nothing could be more personal than her thesis project, inspired by the issue of affordable housing and helping people who need access to it.
Her thesis project will be on view at OhioHealth Presents Chroma: Best of CCAD | The 140th Annual Student Exhibition, presented by OhioHealth, on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.
