Patricia Ní Chonaire - Final Year - Sculpture

Patricia Ní Chonaire from Kilkieran, Connemara is a final year sculpture student. She works with diverse media including sculpture, video and installation. Central to her work as a whole are themes of cultural identity, personal history, memory, loss, absent and time. Her work is generally made from natural materials such as seaweed, sand, water and coral/shells combined with found objects from the land which carry aspects of the history and culture of a place and time. Her work this year is based around a seashore ritual from her home of Connemara. (As one comes to shore from the sea they intend to spit into the water before stepping foot out of their boat-as a gratitude and a sense of giving back to the land.) Patricia’s work hopes to capture the physical encounter from the human to the land. Her work can be seen as a period in time capturing the moving actions – her aim is to portray the little things we often miss and pay little attention to.

Georgie Strutt -  Final Year - Ceramics

Georgie Strutt, From Mayo. Moments cling to ordinary objects. We associate things with events whether historical or personal, objects become sources of connection. Plates are usually found at the dinner table where we come together to talk. If we could make them talk what would they say?

Georgie aim's to create layers and textures on clay to visually highlight moments from our online universe. she has been working with earthenware clay, painting coloured slips onto the surface and developing the plates with glaze.

she uses clay as a canvas to comment on how social media has impacted the way we communicate with each other.

Deirdre Mc Inerney- Final Year - Paint- Part time

Deirdre Mc Inerney from Tulla, Co Clare. Is in Final year part time Level 7 Degree course Gmit. Deirdre paints in both oil and acrylic and bases much of her work on photos that she takes herself. She finds the journey from photo to painting to be a very interesting one, where the image seems to take a life of its own and rarely ends up similar to the original image. Her currant body of work is based on the theme of absence and focuses on empty spaces and empty chairs. There is a distinct lack of human presence. Yet there is a suggestion in the form of a cup or an open book, provoking a questioning response in the viewer. Artists who have influenced Deirdre include Edward Hopper, Wilhelm Hammershoi, Anna Ancher, Jim Holland, Nan Golden, Anne Francois Coulomny and Eithne Jordan.

Teresa Mulholland- Final Year- Paint- Part Time

Teresa Mulholland, Lives and works in Galway. With a background in counselling Psychotherapy she completed a MA in art therapy in 2009. Having worked in the area, she is very interested in the area of psychological trauma, she is especially fascinated with inter-generational trauma, cellular memory epigenetics. Marion O'Connor- Byrne - Final Year -Paint- Part time

Marion O'Connor- Byrne , from Murrisk, Westport,  Co. Mayo.

Is in the final year of Part-Time 3 Level 7 Degree course at GMIT.

Marion paints in oils and acrylics.

Her project this year began with the exploration of movement in painting. She chose musicians and dancers as the subject matter. Movement in a dancer is more visible to the observer than that in a musician.Though not as obvious, movement and energy pervade the whole being of the musician. Observing a dancer or musician in a painting calls on the viewer to engage with his or her own sense of rhythm and movement assisted by the maker of the work.

Marion tries to convey this movement by guiding the eye of the viewer through the composition, her sur of directional line, energetic brush strokes, cropped foreground figures, contrast in dark and light and balance in busy and quiet spaces.

Conor Burke - Final Year - Paint

Conor Burke- Conors work seeks to explore the relationship between architecture and power relations in capitalist society, dealing with issues of class, social structure and the hidden or unseen forces that perpetuate the current order of things. The work often takes on an abstract or somewhat ambiguous quality that seeks to reflect the latent or untapped power that exists within the ranks of the working classes. Rather then being a specific critique of the failings of capitalism, my work is derived from the positive potentiality for change, for something better.

Laney Mannion - Final Year - Print

Laney Mannion is a multidisciplinary artist, from Connemara. starting out in the world of performance, working in production for theatre, expanded her practice to include sound, sculpture and printmaking. She is interested in how the environment can shape the people, having lived out of rural Ireland for more than a decade she explores the contrast of social commentary between urban and rural areas.

Jenni Miller - Final Year - Textiles

Jenni Miller from, Spink, Co loais, Jenni is a final year textiles student, This year Jenni's project is based around her childhood home which is now derelict, she is taking found materials from the house taking inspiration from them for her textile pieces, Jenni finds she is drawn back to her once home again and again, she is trying to investigate is home a physical place a feeling attached to a memory/person or place.

Caroline Butler Donohue - Final year - paint - level 7

Caroline Donohue, from Galway, Caroline is attending the part time level 7 degree course at the centre for creative arts and media GMIT, Caroline is a painter working prominently in oil. Her love of the female figure in domestic settings is portrayed in her work, suggesting narratives around loss, poverty, exhaustion, illness and isolation within domestic space. Provoking an emotional response in the viewer, presently Caroline is working from still’s taken from the tv. Rob Collins -Final Year - Paint

Rob Collins​, From Co, Tipperary,Robs paintings are often large scale figurative works with elements of abstraction,. the basis of his paintings draw on an archive of different images he has collected since his youth . The images relate to his interests in music and subcultures, he searches for photographs of figures, he thinks would lend themselves well to his own personal style of painting. The photograph acts as a starting point. it is in the art of painting that invention takes over. His main interests are punk music listening to bands such as the fall, the stooges and  John Cooper Clarke , Rob finds this not only informs his practice, but that the incidental occurrence from listening while painting text often starts to appear in his work.

Jaesin Yu - Final Year - Textiles

Jaesin is a Galway based, South Korean Textile Artist, specialising in weave. She believes that a good design tells a story that engages and motivates. She usually gather inspiration from the environment around her and have been lived in a number of diverse environments, such as the urban metropolis - Seoul and the more tranquil seaside town - Galway, these elements usually find their way into her work.                                                                        This year she is exploring tactile sensory  and psychological relationship humans have with textiles. She have chosen environment of sea such as feeling of the water, corals and fishes’ shape, scales, fin and a movement of fish that has a certain pattern. She will explore the feeling when the water touches skin and person surrounded by water. The word which describes the water such as splashing, floating, shimmering, control, surrounding, transparent etc. will be explored in various way during research. With this research, She wants to develop tactile and textured textile pieces such as rug (touching with feet), chair cover (touching with body) and wall hanging (touching with hand/vision) to decorate foyer of a building, office or house to evoke a feeling  of comport or some emotions towards it.

Tasha Coyne - Final Year - Textiles

Tasha Coyne. From, Ballyhaunis Co. Mayo. Tasha coyne is a final year student working in Textiles, She enjoys working with different mediums including watercolours, dissoluble fabric and collage. Her work involves exploring elements within the landscape, this year her project is based around minuscule details within a quarry, To achieve her aims she will be using embroidery and exspandex dissoluble fabric, The title of her project this year is called "Quarry Canvas"

Luke Moloney- Final Year - Ceramics

Luke Moloney from Galway city, is a final year student whose chosen discipline is ceramics, Luke is very interested in unique glazes that reflect on the chromatic colour in nature. Luke enjoys subverting the form through his skills in mould making, deconstructing the meaning of objects in new imaginative ways.

Rachel Coyne - Final year - Paint

Rachel Coyne From Mullingar The figure is an essential form in Rachel’s paintings, she enjoys working with oils on a larger scale. Erin singleton- Final year -Textiles

Erin Singleton From Laois, Erin works in abstraction her research is based around expressions and commentary relating to emotions, this work takes shape in the form of constructed manipulated textiles, she is  working with Printmaking and embroidery to develop her concepts.
