Stepping into ARTS 102 on the first day was super exciting, I previously had taken one graphic design class and absolutely loved it, but sadly lost all that I learned and never kept up with it besides adobe illustrator. The first project was with photoshop and creating two project of a 6 word memoir. Photoshop is not my favorite thing in the world, the technology aspect confuses me. But I took a deep breath and dipped my toes into the water. My first memoir really spoke to me, āshe canāt pick a favorite colorā. I am a very indecisive person, It takes forever for me to make a decision. Especially when it comes to picking a favorite color, it changes every time someone asked me, because there is so many on the spectrum then just the basic red, yellow, blue. I wanted the words to stick out so I decided on making the font bold and adding some color opposite on the wheel to each other. The second memoir, āno sound in a empty forestā I wanted the words to flow with the image itself, I couldnāt figure out how to make the font curved; using my iPad and pencil I wrote out each letter by hand making sure they flowed the way the image did.it was a stressful process cause Iāve very particular and a perfectionist. I also decided on placing the words āemptyā over the individual in the image, as I felt it really tied with the memoir. The rest of the images are of a collage I made in the stairwell of my home and in my bathroom. I have so much artwork and a lot of wall space and I decided on the collage to articulate who is living in the home using just imagery. Like Stephen Doyle said, āso public and private, (i.e. his home) art and design are all woven together.ā I first had to decide how I was gonna display the poster because I had so many, especially copies of my famous artworks. My roommate who happens to be my sister isnāt has enthusiastic about artwork as I am, so I took all my works of art and started at the top. Then I took all the posters that werenāt related to art and placed them at the bottom of the staircase. I worked my way from each end placing the posters accordingly to the flow of the wall and to make sure the posters didnāt fall too close or directly on top of each other, āgraphic designers combine words and pictures to convey a messageā(Micheal Bierut). Once I got to the middle the posters flowed, because my art interfered with the other posters and tied together (mona lisa isnāt Mona Lisa). For my bathroom I just place my artwork that Iāve created through the years, mostly mixed media on canvas and hung them randomly around the wall, kind of like my own studio with my artwork on display, āThe key word is to bring passion to everything you doā(Arnold Schwartzman). I wanted myself to also be expressed. To sum up the reading for these ātwoāweeks was definitely interesting, hearing from different types of graphic designers and professional graphic designers who have created amazing pieces and their methods of how they go about obstacles and navigate through the art world and technology world and make art and good art for themselves and their clients. I am even more excited to continue on to week 3 in ARTS 102.
